Yellow Boxes

Chapter 1

Yellow Boxes. That's what my city was known for, not literally. I mean conformity. Each house the same, each neighbour doing the same thing every morning, afternoon, and evening. Every new neighbour got a (you guessed it) pie, and a warm neighbourly welcome. It was actions like this that drove me out of my lovely yet conformed city, and into the rough big city of New York. But ultimately, it was my dream! My thirst for more in life!

“Mom, Dad, don't worry I’ll be fine! I’m literally gunna be only a FaceTime or five hour drive away!”
“Mom, I’ll be fine. I promise. And hey! I’ll be back in a couple of months for Thanksgiving anyways!”
“Yes, mom.”
“Of course, dad!” I said as we exchanged our last hugs and I wiped a tear off my cheek. I grabbed my things and headed towards my plane. This was the last I’d see of my town for a couple of months as I prepared for life in New York City as a journalist… well, an intern, but soon a journalist. I showed the flight attendant my ticket and made my way to my seat on the plane. I put my EarPods in, played my music on shuffle, and rested for my three hour flight to the Big Apple.

...
“Thank you for flying with Southwest Airlines, and enjoy your time in New York City.” I heard the flight attendant say as I walked off the plane and over the bag pick up area. Here I am in New York City, ready to pursue my dreams and make myself known among the millions who read the daily news. I took my phone out of my pocket and dialled home.

*rings*
“Mom, it’s me Jess! I’ve just landed”
“Thanks mom. Listen I gotta go, but I love you and I’ll call you soon!” I hung up the phone, and grabbed my bags. I hulled them over to the pick up dock, where I waited for my Uber; it was about a five minute wait and then another hour long drive to my apartment.

“Do you mind helping me carry my things up stairs?” I asked.

“Yeah, sure no problem.” My Uber driver replied getting out of the car and popping open the trunk. We walked into the Westport Apartments and straight to the front desk.

“Hello, my name is Jes-“

“One second please.” The receptionist said as she began typing up something. I nodded and stood there for about five minutes until she said,”How may I help you?”

“My name is Jessica, and I’m renting an apartment here, and was just wondering if I could get the keys to my apartment.”

“Oh, of course! Can I get your last name please.”

“Yes, its Brooks.” She nodded and typed in what I presume is my name and then reached for the drawer, and pulled out a set of keys.

“This key is for your apartment. This key is for the pool/spa. And this key is for the gym. Now just sign this to confirm you are picking up the keys, and you’re good to go.” She said handing me a paper. I signed and initialled, twice, and then handed the paper back to her. She gave me the keys and then my Uber driver and I made our way toward the elevator. The ride up to the seventh floor was awkward at first, but then the silence was broke when my Uber driver sprang up a conversation.

“So, is this your first time in New York?”

“Yes, actually! Any tips?”

“The subway will get you where you need to go, but beware of the drunks! And people are very rude here so don't be surprised if you get pushed by people and don't get a sorry.”

“Thanks, I guess.” The elevator doors opened and we walked over to my room door. My Uber put my things down, shook my hand and gave me kind,”Good-bye, and good luck.” I waved as he walked back to the elevator. I pulled out the house key the receptionist had given me earlier and pushed the door open.
“Wow…” I gasped as I entered and looked around my fully furnished apartment. The first thing on the left was an elegant kitchen, and as I walked further down the hall I walked into my new living room, which had a huge window over looking Manhattan. Then, a left and a right led me to my bedroom and across from the bedroom was a luxurious bathroom. I jumped onto the bed and relaxed for a bit.

“I’M IN NEW YORK CITY!!!” I squealed. I pulled out my phone and dialled home once more.

“MOM, DAD MY APARTMENT IS AMAZING! I’M SO IN LOVE WITH IT!”

“That’s great honey! Your father and I are just about to have dinner mind if we call you in a bit?”

“YEAH! NO PROBLEM! LOVE YOU!” I basically yelled before hanging up. I threw my phone beside me and then got up and began unpacking all my clothes and toiletries. I was about two hours into unpacking and my stomach began growling more than usual; so I put my things down and decided to order Chinese take out.

Thirty minutes later I heard a knock on my door, and I got up immediately to open it. Except for it wasn’t the Chinese delivery guy.

“Hey, uh… sorry to bother you, but are you Jessica?”

“Yeah, why?”

“Oh! Nothing bad just the Chinese delivery guy hit the the wrong apartment. I believe this belongs to you.” The guy said handing me my food.

“I am so sorry about that!” I apologised taking the food.

“No. No. It’s fine. No worries.”

“Are you sure?”

“Absolutely. So… you new here?”

“Yeah, I just moved in today!”

“Cool! Do you like it so far?”

“Yeah, my apartment is nice.”

“That’s cool! By the way I’m Ezra. Ezra Miller.” The guy said reaching out to shake my hand.

“Nice to meet you Ezra. I’m Jessica Brooks, but you could just call me Jess.”

“Well it’s nice to meet you Jess. Maybe I’ll see you around sometime.” He said while waving and walking back to his place. I grabbed the food and went back inside to sit on the couch on watch some T.V. After my dinner I cleaned up, brushed my teeth, and got ready for bed ( Outfit: http://www.polyvore.com/cgi/set?id=218787909 ). I set my alarm clock for 6AM so I could be extra ready for my first day as an intern for one of the greatest newspaper companies in New York!
