Beating Heart

e i g h t y s i x - precaution.

//Julianne//

My eyes are familiar with the gravel road we just turned onto, which makes me curious as to why we're going this way. "Harry." I mumble his name, not worrying about whether I'm loud or not. My eyes peer out the window, watching the trees fly by. "Yes, babe?" Harry asks calmly, we're quite the opposite at the moment. "Why are we going to the house?" I question, turning my head to look at him - something I hadn't done in the last twenty minutes.

"Patience, darlin'." He smiles, his eyes remaining on the road he knows by heart. "I'm very confused, you know." I inform him, he probably already knows this. He just chuckles at what I say, taking a quick look my way. "You worry too much, dear." He tells me. "It's not worry.. I'm just.. confused as to why we're going to the house. Are we having dinner with everyone else?" I ask, trying to find a better answer than "patience".

Harry sighs, a smile still on his lips, "You really need to learn to have some patience. It isn't that hard, love." The slight attitude he has makes me cock a brow, my eyes glaring out the window again. "You're being mean." I mumble, throwing my arms over my chest with a huff. "Mean? How so?" I roll my eyes at his proper speech, a definite sign that he's messing with me. He always does that to me, always gets so fancy with his words when he's trying to keep something from me.

The time on the radio reads 5:43PM, making me more curious as to why we are headed to the house. Clearly, the only reasonable explanation is that we're having dinner with the family. That isn't an issue, obviously, I love spending time with them every now and then. I'm only annoyed by the fact Harry is acting this way with me, so secretive and so sneaky - I absolutely hate it.

Before I even realized it, we pulled up at the house, and Harry put the truck into park. He turns it off, pulling out the key just seconds after. I stay still, knowing he'll get irritated if I don't let him open my door and help me down from the tall height of the truck. Just as I assumed, Harry pulls my door open and extends his palm, offering me his assistance. Knowing I desperately need it, I sit my hand in his and he wraps his other arm around my back, helping me down to the ground.

Our hands release each other once I'm on the grass. His arm remains on my back as we walk to the porch. Standing in the open doorway is Niall, a smile on his face as he sees us walking up. "Hey there, strangers." He greets us warmly, wrapping an arm around Harry then the other around me. I put an arm around his lower back while Harry pats his shoulder. "Only been a week." Harry says with a laugh as Niall pulls away, gesturing us to go in first. He follows us into the house then shuts the door.

"There they are! Lovely to see you two." Gemma grins happily as she appears in the living room. Harry and I part ways, his arms embracing his sister as I turn to Niall, who's raising his brows as I start to speak to him. "Do you know what's going on?" I ask curiously, hoping someone will answer me since Harry has failed to do so for the past half an hour. "What?" Niall is just as lost as I am. Great, there goes that.

"Julianne! Come with us, we need to show you something, dear." Sophia comes skipping down the hallway, her hand reaching out to grab mine. I throw a look Harry's way, only to find that he's engrossed in a conversation with Zayn - who I didn't even know was in the living room. Sophia tugs me down the hall, Gemma coming behind us. She pulls me into my old room where I'm shocked immediately by all the things laid out on the bed.

Dresses and outfit combinations, shoes and jewelry, makeup scattered over the pillows - what the hell? "Julianne, hey love." Perrie says from the corner of the room, walking away from the closet with a pair of heels dangling from her fingers. "Hey." I mumble, overwhelmed by everything. "What's going on?" I ask nervously, the last time they done this Harry took me out on a date...

The date. Our lovely day has to come to an end - dinner is the end, according to Harry, clearly he's brought me back so I can change from the casual clothing I'm wearing into something nicer, something more formal. At least, I assume that's the case.

Sophia interrupts my thoughts by grabbing my hand and pulling me to the side of the bed, so that I can look down at all the items laid out. "Go on, pick something. Haven't got all night." She says with a smile, dropping my hand seconds later. I gulp softly, my eyes roam over each option of clothing - trying to determine what Harry would like more than anything else. "I'll be right back, Harry needs me." Sophia tells me, patting my elbow before exiting the room.

"We've been waiting all week for this! Are you excited? How have things been today?" Perrie asks as her and Gemma stand across from me on the other side of the bed - eyes watching me closely. "Um.. it's been great. I.. I just didn't expect.. all-all this." I saw, motioning my hands in the air above all the things on the bed. "We might have went a bit over board." Gemma said with a laugh, shrugging at me. "But when do we not?" Perrie elbows her in the side, they share some giggles as I continue to debate over the options.

Harry likes simple, nothing flashy. Definitely a dress, I think I would look nicer in a dress. So, I push aside the striped dress along with the shirts, skirts, and pants in my mind. I stare down at what's left. A knee length yellow dress with long sleeves, a soft grey dress that reaches the mid thigh, a thin later of sheer material covered in tiny sparkles is on the outside of the dress, and then there's a red dress. It catches my eye more than anything.

"I wanna try this one first." I mumble out, my fingertips running along the hem of the red dress. The girls give each other quick looks before smirking at me. "Harry's going to love that." Perrie speaks, breaking the silence in the room. I feel my cheeks blush at the thoughts occurring in my head. I grab the dress and walk into the bathroom, not fully comfortable undressing in front of them two. Before I even had time to shut the door, Sophia comes trotting behind me, a few bags in her hand.

"Ooh, I adore this one!" She says, referring to the dress, as she pushes the door closed and turns the lock. Sophia and I have a bond much different than any other I have with the rest of the family. Sophia treats me like a sister, a best friend, and a daughter all at the same time - that's why we're so close, I do believe.

I tug my shirt over my head, dropping it to the ground. Instantly, I'm staring at myself in the mirror, not sure how I feel about the basic white bra I'm wearing currently. Without mentioning it to Sophia, I tug down my jeans and kick them aside - along with my shoes and socks. Once again, my eyes trail to my reflection - simple white cotton underwear over my behind.

"What's the matter, love?" Sophia asks with a worried voice, her eyes staring at my reflection. I should have known she would notice my behavior - she knows me too well. "I just.. What if things.. get there.. and.. and I.. we.. I'm wearing.. this.. plain.. white.." I sigh heavily, turning away from the mirror entirely now, not wanting to be reminded of the way I look right now. "How about.. you change into something more appealing." She insists, a smile softly on her lips. "I.. I don't own anything appealing. Just cotton and simple colors." I shrug my shoulders carelessly, this is something I should have considered a while ago.

I'm sure he'll want me more if he undresses me and sees me in something sexy, instead of childish cotton underwear. "Harry has his ways, dear." I furrow my brows as I watch Sophia dip her hand into a shopping bag. When she brings it out I notice two pieces of fabric hanging from her fingers, a smirk plastered over her face. I recognize that - it's something Harry had been eyeing at one of the stores. I feel my heart begin to beat faster, violently pounding in my chest.

"He didn't plan it. Told me he snuck some things into the cart when you weren't looking. Figured they come in handy one day.. and maybe today is that day."

Hm, maybe.

I've never seen someone look so stunning before, the clothing is just an addition to her gorgeous self. She could walk out in a trash bag and I'd be completely, utterly in love with her. The restaurant's parking lot is very full, so I'm glad that I made reservations for us. Julianne's small hand is clutching mine, afraid to let go. We're surrounded by strangers, and I know this makes her anxiety stir up some. She brings her other hand to the bend of my arm, holding on tightly.

"Do you have reservations?" The hostess asks, a rather kind smile on her face. "Uh, yes, we do." I nod lightly, taking a glance at Julianne. Her eyes are staring up at me, her lips rolled in nervously. I display a small smile for her, hoping that she'll ease up some. She just returns the gesture, leaning her head against my arm. "Name, please." The woman says, distracting me from my beautiful girl.

"Styles, uh, Harry Styles." Julianne's hand squeezes mine a few times, I give her the same amount back. "Right this way, Mr. Styles." And with that, we're off towards the table. Julianne is staying close to me as we make our way through the crowded restaurant. Candle light and champagne surrounds us on all sides. Fancy lighting displays and waiters in tuxes - everything is very overwhelming for her, I'm sure.

"A waiter will be right with you." The hostess says when we reach our table. I let Julianne sit down first, making sure that she's comfortable in this setting. "Everything alright, darlin'?" I ask, leaning down to her. She nods a few times, "Lovely." I take this as a good thing and I sit down across from her - our eyes meeting instantly.

"You look so beautiful. And the dress is nice, too." I tell her with a slight smile. Her cheeks catch fire, those pretty eyes dart away from my stare. "Th-thanks." She mumbles quietly, tucking a piece of her blonde hair behind her ear. She's wearing a little bit of makeup, not a lot though. I know her more than anyone else, she doesn't like heavy makeup. Just a little mascara, lip gloss, and concealed blemishes. I think she's perfect without it, but she never thinks the same.

"I apologize for not telling you earlier, I wanted to keep it a surprise as long as I could." I let her know that I was never intending to be mean, I just wanted to surprise her with something nice. "It's fine, I'm not mad or anything." She sighs lightly. My eyes can't dare to part from her precious face. Her beautiful features, all of which I adore so much, so perfect to me.

From her pale, fragile skin, to her ocean blue eyes and her rosy lips, flushed cheeks and straight teeth, everything - she's magnificent. I often wonder how did I, of all people, get so lucky to be able to call such a sweet creature mine? Such a blessing, a beautiful blessing.

"Harry." Her voice pulls me from my trance, making me raise my brows as a silent reply to her. Her eyes lift to catch my gaze, neither of us look away. "Today was great. You.. you're so kind to me. Too kind." She laughs faintly, pushing her hand back with her hand. "Every day is amazing with you.. but today was just.. refreshing. Like.. we did.. things we don't ever do, and I.. I enjoyed it. So thank you, for everything." Julianne sits her hand down on the table, I take advantage of the moment and sit mine gently on top of hers. She smiles down at where our hands touch, making my heart skip a beat.

"You don't ever have to thank me for anything. You deserve the world, my love, and I will do whatever it takes to give that to you." I assure her, rubbing my thumb over her knuckles. She parts her lips to speak, but the waiter reaches us the very same moment. She pulls her hand away, not wanting to show affection in front of someone we don't know. I clear my throat, preparing to speak to the man.

"Would you like to start off with something to drink?" He speaks directly to me, clearly able to see that I'm the more sociable one. "Um, yes. A bottle of champagne and two waters, please." From the corner of my eye, I see Julianne's eyes widen at my words. I keep myself from smiling as the man nods to me, telling me he'll return quickly with our drinks. Once he's got, Julianne decides to start a conversation. "I'm eighteen." She reminds me, clearly I know this.

"Not tonight." I mumble, reaching into my pocket to grab my wallet. She furrows her brows as she intensively watches me. I open my wallet and pull out my identification card, along with a second one that somewhat belongs to Julianne - at least, the picture belongs to her. "What's that?" She questions, leaning over to see better. I slap my hand over the card, a smile on my face as I look up at her. "Go along with it, I'll explain in a moment." I whisper as the waiter makes his way back to us. She just nods to me - but it's clear to me that she's concerned. She looks terrified, anyone who happens to catch a glimpse of her will be able to see that.

"ID please, just a precaution." The man says as he sits down the bottle and the two ice waters. I uncover the cards and slide them closer to his view. He stares down at them for a moment, reading over the information before quickly glancing at me then to Julianne, who still looks like she's about to have a panic attack. "Alright, thank you." He says as he pulls the top off the bottle, pouring some into each of the tall glasses. Julianne's eyes watch the liquid fill up the glass closest to her.

When he disappears to give us time to review the menus, I take the opportunity to speak. "Here, take a look." I pass her the card with her picture on it and she nearly chokes on the air as she reads over it. "Harry!" She hisses, slightly with anger and shock. "This is illegal." All I can do is chuckle at her, she over reacts too often. "It's quite legal. Especially since I got them in the mail from the governor." Her eyes almost pop out of their sockets as my words fill her brain.

"What?" This is all she says, complete shock has overtaken her. "You see, love, people like me.. have ways of coexisting among people like you. We obviously don't age, so we can't just stay in the same place for decades. And clearly, once people think we're gone and dead, we can't use the same name. The name I reserved our table with isn't what's on my card. I used my actual name." I try to keep my voice quiet, I'd hate for the wrong people to overhear this sacred information I'm telling her. "Wait, so the governor knows?" She questions, only concerned with that portion.

I take a quick glance around, making sure we're the only ones involved in this talk. When I'm sure no one is listening in, I continue on telling her this stuff - she has the right to know. "Yes, the entire government. You see.. my kind as a whole have made agreements with the leaders of this world. In order for us to live peacefully among everyone else, we had to have things like IDs change from time to time and money sent in, since we can't publicly work very long." Julianne's eyes have never grown this wide during one of our talks before. It's concerning me some.

"In exchange for the things we need, we regulate animal populations. There are some of us who handle private business - people the government don't want around anymore.. well, they get handled. And.. and just in general our silence. If everyone like me teamed up.. we could end the population of humans quickly. Wouldn't take long, a few months maybe."

"Why are you.. just now telling me this?" Julianne puts her hand on her forehead as her elbow presses into the table. She seems quite stressed, I didn't mean to make her feel this way. "Are you ready to order, sir?" Out of nowhere, the waiter appears at our table. "Um.. ten minutes, please." I tell him. He nods to me before walking away.

"M'sorry. I didn't think you'd be interested in this. It's boring talk, really." I'm honest with her, I never realized this would effect her so much. "Harry.. you could have told me at least part of it. This explains where you all get the money.. why you never work.. or.. " She pauses, shoving her hand through her roots. I sit back in my chair, nervous as to what else she's going to say. Is she upset with me? God, I hope not. I never meant for it to be this serious.

After a few quiet minutes, she sighs heavily. "This is crazy. I'm not twenty two. And.. and Smith isn't my last name." I reach over and grab her wrist, pulling her hand closer so that I could grab it and hold onto it. She needs to remain calm, we're in public and I'd hate to cause a scene. "Shh.. it's fine. Nothing to stress over." I say in a soft tone as I hold her hand between both of my palms, trying my best to soothe her. Julianne's eyes cut back to mine, she shakes her head slightly from left to right.

"Is there anything else I should know?" She whispers, understanding that we must be quiet about this. "I think that covers it for now." I reply, letting a sigh follow my words. "No more secrets, please." She insists, staring harshly at me as she awaits my promise. "Of course, I swear." I nod a few times, squeezing her small hand to assure her everything's going to be fine. "You could have at least put your last name on there." She laughs gently, biting her lips seconds after.

Quickly, I realize what she's talking about. "I know, I know." I laugh out. "But Sophia thought it would be best to make it seem as if you two were related.. just in case."

-

Watching Julianne take bites of her chocolate cheese cake covered in chocolate chips and chocolate syrup has to be the cutest thing I've seen her do. She groans as she takes another bite, pleased with the taste of the dessert. She pops the cherry into her mouth, eyes on me as she chews it and swallows it quickly. "This is incredible." She tells me with a grin. "Try it."

She picks up one of the pieces she had previously cut with her fingers, reaching over the table to my mouth. I open it for her and she drops the piece into my mouth. I close my mouth, taking her index finger between my teeth. She squeals suddenly, yanking her hand out of my mouth. "Harry!" She yells in a whisper. "Behave!"

I eat the piece of cake and then swallow it, quick to defend myself. "Hey, you're the one who put your fingers in my mouth." This makes her giggle, putting her hands on either cheek to hide her blushing skin. "You should have gotten dessert." She tells me, kicking my leg under the table with her foot. "I'll get my dessert in the truck.. when I kiss you, babe. It's been too long." My eye drops to a wink, making her look away - her face red with embarrassment.

"Is this the last portion of our day?" Julianne curiously asks, eating the final bite of her cheesecake. "Hm, probably a nice bath once we're home. How's that sound?" I ask, standing from the table. She wipes her fingers on a napkin before standing along with me. "Perfect." She whispers, her arms sliding around my neck. I give her a peck on the lips, the slight bit of alcohol she consumed has eased her nerves. It's been an hour since she finished her one and only glass, but the affect still lingers.

I take her hand in mine, leading her to the front entrance. We've already paid, so there's nothing left to do other than head home. A few people glance our way, some eyes don't even acknowledge us and others stay on us far too long. I ignore the stares, not caring what anyone things of how things look - I'm sure my scarred face has frightened at least five people tonight. It doesn't bother me. Julianne loves me the way I am, she's all that I'm concerned about.

"Where did we park?" Julianne huffs, the heels she's wearing started to hurt her nearly an hour ago. I hate to make her walk so far. "Not sure." I say as we leave through the doors, the gentle breeze hitting us. She sighs, clearly not wanting to walk in the uncomfortable shoes. I smile to myself as I decide to take her by surprise. I yank her off the ground, one arm around her back the under under he knees. "Harry!" She shrieks, arms flying around my neck in an attempt to hold herself up, even though I'm doing that just fine on my own.

I just smirk as she hides her face in my neck, trying to hide those flustered cheeks from me. "I refuse to let you walk.. I know your feet are hurting." Her fingers get lost in my hair, and her other hand touches against my cheek. "You treat me too well, Harry." Her soft voice makes my heart tingle in such a good way. "I treat you right, just like you deserve." Julianne giggles softly against me, "I love you."

"I love you." I reply, kissing her temple a few times. We reach the truck, which means we'll have to part ways for now. I open her door and gently put her into the truck. She sighs as I place her on the seat, her arms uncoiling from around me. "I hate these shoes." She kicks off the shoes in the floorboard, smiling over at me as I grab her seat belt. I just give her a laugh while I reach around her and buckle her in. "I could do it, y'know." She mumbles, her hands grabbing a hold of my face just as I go to lean out of the truck.

"I just want to make sure you're buckled in." Julianne leans to me, our distance disappearing suddenly. Our lips connect, I can taste the chocolate in her mouth as our tongues begin to playfully wrestle. I can't stop my hand from grabbing her waist, gripping tightly as I feel her overpower me in our kiss. Her tongue enters my mouth, licking the roof a few times before she pulls away, teeth biting down on her swollen bottom lip.

"Can we take a bath as soon as we get home?" She whispers against my mouth, not wanting to pull away just yet. "We can do whatever you'd like, darlin'." I place a kiss against the corner of her mouth, resulting in her cheeks to become more flushed than they already were. "Promise?" Her voice barely exists, making the moment feel more intimate between us. "I promise."

"Be careful what you promise." I feel her smirk against my mouth, seconds before she continues the kiss she previously put a pause to.
