Chapter 1

“Do you have everything?” my mom yelled as I proceeded to walk out of the door. “Yes mom, I have everything.” I replied a little annoyed by her persistent asking. “Don’t be late, I pulled a lot of strings to get you a spot at this place okay, don’t you dare make me look bad Lillian.” my father said standing next to my mother watching me walk out of my house and into my car. “Yes dad because we have a perfect reputation with a DUI in the family and a baby out of wedlock.” I replied sarcastically rolling my eyes. “You don’t have to be a bitch about it.” my older sister laughed while popping her head out knowing I was talking to her. “Bye guys.” “Bye, good luck !” they shouted. Morning drives are a pain but sometimes the best don’t you think? You’re probably tired so you’re quiet yet you have a lot of thoughts crossing through your head, better than that though was that it was always chilly. Reminds me a lot of San Francisco, that’s where I went to school before they kicked my ass out. I had to move back into my parents house and been branded as the new shameful daughter next to my sister, Savannah. We’re not the best example of people but we’re definitely good at heart. Her and my dad are the ones who helped me get this job, my dad said I either had to go to school or get a job and I refused to go to school yet, not after what had happened.

The building looked a lot better than I had expected, almost church like. Pillars in front of the door with bell towers stretching high into the sky. At the top of each pillar you can barely make out a cross. The walls were white and crisp almost as if it were fresh paint. So far the building looks promising as a job location.

I turn off my car looking into the mirror one last time making sure my eyebrows were plucked and my makeup was flawless, trying to make a good impression for my first day. While I’m at it, I check my teeth and up my nose making sure nothing is in either place to embarrass me. As I got out of my car, I noticed an older lady standing by the entrance staring at me intently. What the fuck? She’s wearing a nun outfit and her facial structure is extremely chiseled. As I walk closer to her I see her eyes are hollow and dark. If you could imagine what a possessed nun looked like, she would be it. I smile to try and avoid her from finding out my rude thoughts.

“Lillian?” she called to me. “Umm yeah that’s me” I said wishing I would have turned back in time. “We’ve been expecting you.” she says creepily turning away from me and towards the door. “Hi, how are you?” I manage to say trying to hide the fear in my voice. “I’m good d ear, how is your mother, Lucy?” “Oh she’s good she’s at home with my father and sister.” “Ahh yes, your sister Savannah, how is she doing after the baby?” she said catching me by surprise. No one really knew about that or at least they weren’t suppose to. Like I said, we’re not the best example but we’re definitely good at heart. “Umm, she’s good as well. So how long have you been working here?” I asked trying to change the subject. “I’ve been here 40 years now but come, let’s show you around.” she said gesturing inside the building. The inside was nothing like the outside. The tile on the floor was a disaster and peeling off showing the cement that was poking through. The walls look like they were ready to collapse with stains that appeared to be blood or feces.. this is suppose to be a place where people would come and be able to fix their lives in a happy healthy environment but so far it seems to be the complete opposite. I follow the nun whose name I’ve yet to learn as she gracefully walks.

“This is where the patients check-in” she said distracting me from my thought of her graceful walk, “after they check-in it is your responsibility to escort them to their room and make sure they are sedated.” “Sedated? As soon as they get here?” I asked confused. “Well how else would you plan on having them under control?” she said more confused at my question than I was at her command. “But I thought this was suppose to be like a calming healthy environment?” “A what?” she said almost half laughing, “my dear, this is no such thing, on the contrary, this is the dump for life’s rejects, everyone who can’t be fixed or refuses to be fixed end up here and we don’t ask them if they want to be fixed, we fix them because we are noble human beings. Understood?” she said as her reaction changed from creepy to cruel. “Now, wait here while I get you a nurse so you can shadow her for the day.” she said walking away looking a bit annoyed with my presence. I looked around trying to find some of the patients that I would be working with but found nothing. “Life’s rejects” how could someone be so cruel and rude especially when they are her patients. It was a bit infuriating to think someone could be that.. that.. nasty!

“Lillian?” a woman called snapping me out of my thoughts. She looked sweet, dressed in blue nurse attire. She had long golden hair. Almost my age maybe a year older so around twenty-one. “I’m Elizabeth”. “Yes hi” I said extending my hand to her, “I’m Lillian nice to meet you, you must be the nurse I’m shadowing right?” “Yes so.. what has she told you so far?” she says very gity. “Well so far she showed me where the patients check in and how you sedate them afterwards.” “Yes, that is all correct, makes my job easier.” we both laugh in unison. She is really pretty and you can tell is warm hearted. “Why do we sedate them right away? Isn’t that a bit inhumane?” I asked genuinely curious. “Well I think so but they don’t, to them they are kind of a lost cause and they’ll do anything to keep them calm and out of the way. Come, let me show you something.” she said walking towards a big white door with a blacked out window. Scanning her badge she opened it up and let me in first. The smell was absolutely horrendous. It smelled like human feces and dead bodies. “Oh God what is that smell!” I said covering my nose. “Its the patients.” she said calmly not being affected by the smell. As we walked in all the men began to whistle and scream inappropriate things. “Hey baby wanna let me suck on those tits instead of the juice cups they give us.” this homeless looking man said laughing loudly causing the other patients to get rowdy. “Enough Mr. Steg or you’ll be sedated” Elizabeth said sternly, “anyway”, she continued, “the first five doors on both sides are pretty decent, they are calm for the most part but are here because of their outbursts. The six doors after are a little more complicated and like to toss feces, sperm, and whatever bodily fluids they can get from themselves. The last two are here for either attacking other patients, or killing them.” she said. “Now follow me, let me show you where the patients get their meals,” she said as we began to walk down the hallways. Door after door and for some strange reason I began to feel a sense of dread. I see the rooms and in some the patients are acting normal, writing in journals or taking naps. But as we get further down the hallways towards the end a disgusting, powerful smell begins to take over and there’s a constant sound of pounding against the metal doors. Peeking into the rooms these patients are much more uneasy. Their eyes refusing to break contact with mine, it’s like they are staring right into my soul, trying to strike fear into me. And it’s working. And then I heard the screams. It was a low sound at first, in fact I felt like perhaps it was just my mind playing tricks on me. There was no more doors in the hallway, so surely it must have been all in my head. But as we rounded the corner there was one last door. It was heavily bolted shut much like the door to a safe vault is shut in a bank. I stopped in my tracks and stared at it. The door seemed to have some strange aura about it. And then I heard it again. The screams. But this time I’m sure of it. There was someone on the other side of that door and they were screaming for help. It gave me shivers, every hair on my body stood up at attention and a coldness took over my body. My breathing quickened, I can feel myself getting light headed, sweat beads began to form across my forehead, and then I feel a hand grasp onto my shoulder.

“You don’t wanna go over there.” a boy with curly long hair said. He was tall, on the thin side, a good amount of tattoos on his arms. “Not a boy”, I thought to myself, a man, a handsome man. He had piercing green eyes and pink lips. He was, to my surprise, really really handsome and tall. About 6’2. I didn’t really realize he was a patient himself. I slowly move from under his grip noticing his large hands with tattoos on them as well. “What’s over there?” I asked almost immediately regretting it. “That’s where they keep all the misfits.” he said a bit amused at my facial expression of what is fear and confusion. “You’re new aren’t you? I’m Harry.” he said extending out his hand. I didn’t take it, not because I didn’t want to but because I knew it would be a bit unprofessional if I just took it. Part of me kind of just wants to hold it but I know I can’t so I just stare at his hand making things a bit awkward for the both of us. “Okay that’s fine too, you don’t have to shake it…” he says slowly pulling it back. “Yeah I’m new” is all I manage to say, looking up from his beautiful face. “I’m Lillian a new nurse.”

“Finally we get some good looking nurses” he said half smirking. I wanted to laugh and say a snarky comment but I kept a straight face looking at him the whole time.

“Aren’t you suppose to be in your room?” “No, I get to wander around freely as long as i don’t cause mayhem.” he says a bit proud,

“How am I doing so far?” he says with a cheeky smile, I can’t help but look at his adorable dimple. He really is handsome which is making me question my professionalism at this point. “Good I guess” i say a bit distant, “I don’t really have something to go off of since i just started.” “Maybe you should stop by more often to see how i’m doing.” the cheeky smile still on him. “Yeah if you need me for any medical rea..” “Lillian?” Elizabeth calls. “See you around” he says calmly and retreats back to his room. “Coming.” I say as i see he has now disappeared. “Who were you talking too?” she said smiling walking towards the main desk. “Harry I think was his name.” I said as i followed. “Ahh yes, Harry Styles. He’s an interesting one don’t you think? And really cute too.” she said without worrying about whether she sounded professional or not. “Yeah really cute..” I said not knowing yet whether to trust her with my thoughts yet. “Come on, let me show you the rest of the place.” Elizabeth said dragging me away. When I looked back once more I saw Harry peeking out of his door causing a small smirk appearing on my face.
