Lavender & Roses

IV

I woke to the sound of my doorbell. I groaned and rolled over in bed. I wanted, no, needed another few hours of sleep. After Niall and Sadie had dropped me off, I spent a few hours looking at Sadie's social media profiles. She was an interesting person. I couldn't see all of her content but I saw enough to know that she was extremely eccentric. She had a vast array of interests and hobbies. Her musical taste was all over. On her twitter, she followed every member of some hardcore band to Dr. Dre. And of course she followed Niall. When I tried to check her Instagram, I couldn't. She had it set to private. I was assuming it was because she had many pictures of Niall and didn't want to be followed by fans. She wanted to stay out of the spotlight.
I got out of bed with a grunt hearing the doorbell again. I knew it was Niall so I didn't bother getting dressed. I answered the door in my underwear, probably a horrible idea if it hadn't been Niall. But of course, like I expected it was. He walked into my house with a determined expression on his face.
"Well good morning to you too, Niall." I joked when he didn't say a word to me.
"Stay away from Sadie, Harry." Niall commanded.
"You came over at..." I looked at the clock on the wall. "At eleven am to threaten me?" I asked folding my arms over my chest.
"I'm not threatening you, Harry. I'm just...telling you what to do." Niall replied. "Stay away from Sadie. She's a good girl and she's got enough shit going on in her life. She doesn't need you jumping in and making it worse, okay?"
"Who said I was going to make it worse?" I was stunned at the accusation. "She is a very good girl. She seems really nice. And she's your best friend, apparently. I'd like to get to know her. Be her friend too." I wanted more than that but I had to start some where with her.
"Harry, please. If she's with me, then fine, chat to her all you want. But other than that, leave her be." Niall pleaded. I could see the fear in his eyes so I pressed him for more information.
"Niall, do you like her? Like want to date her?" I asked seriously. He grimaced and shook his head quickly. "Then what is the big deal with me being her friend? That's all I want." I lied once again.
"Harry, I saw the way you were looking at her. You turned on your charm for her the moment you saw her. Don't lie to me and say all you want is a friendship." Niall scolded me.
"Well if you're not trying to be with her, why can't I? It's not going to kill either of us if I do." I stated matter of factly. I didn't get why he was being so dramatic.
"Harry, I am begging you." Niall's voice broke a little. "If it were to go south, which knowing everything that I know about both of you, it will. I don't want to deal with what could happen. I wouldn't be the same and neither would you. Let her be one that got away from you." Niall was serious in his concerns. While I didn't know what they were based upon, I gave him a break.
I nodded, "Okay." Niall lifted his eyebrow at me. "I'll keep my distance if it will make you feel better." Niall's shoulder's sagged in relief.
"Thanks, man. I know I sound like a crazy person but I love Sadie and she can't..." Niall trailed off. I had no idea what he was talking about but I nodded anyway. "Hey, let's get together again tonight. At my house. We'll do another party." Niall suggested.
I shrugged, "Okay." Niall gave me a quick hug then left my house. As soon as the door shut, I smirked. I would get to know Sadie without him knowing about it. What Niall wouldn't know, couldn't possibly hurt him. I was going to talk to Sadie at the party without Niall's prying eyes. I just had to figure out how to get her out of his sight without her acting so anxious.

I sat on Niall's sofa casually speaking to a girl that I hadn't met before. She was nice but a little boring. She didn't have much to talk about except fashion, which I had quite a knowledge of but it was getting old. And she'd started to bash other girls' outfits. I didn't care for that at all. My eyes shot up when I heard my name.
Sadie waved at me nervously, "Hey. Um, have you seen Niall?"
I shook my head, "No. He disappeared a while ago." Sadie frowned and wrapped her arms around her waist, glancing around worriedly. "Is something wrong?" I inquired. She shook her head quickly. I stood from the sofa. I held my hand out to her with a smile, "Come on. Let's go get some air." Sadie reached out for my hand. She hesitated, pulling her hand back just a bit. She stared at my large ring covered hand, like she was deciding, then placed her hand in mine. I tried not to let my smile get to big. I didn't want to scare her, but I liked the way her hand fit in mine. Her hand was small and kind of cold. My hand looked as though it engulfed her. After just a few moments of holding her hand, I could feel warmth in her fingers.
I sat Sadie down on the bench in Niall's garden. We were across from his stupid statue. As I moved to sit beside Sadie, she grabbed my wrist. I gazed at her with curiosity.
"Can we move further into the garden?" She inquired. I held my confused gazed. "I'm afraid of the statue. I hate that Niall bought it." Sadie muttered shyly. I laughed and nodded. I took her small hand once again and stood her up. We moved further into the garden, where we couldn't see the statue. "Thanks." Sadie sighed as we took a seat on a wooden bench.
"You're welcome." I beamed at her. "Now, you wanna tell me what's wrong? Why you were so panicked looking for Niall?" I spoke gently, not wanting to sound to pushy.
"Um, I...there's a lot of people. I'm not really that good with people." She answered embarrassed. I stroked her arm with my knuckles to soothe her. "I like it out here." Sadie stated, like she felt comfort as she took in our surroundings.
I nodded, "Yeah. It is nice out here." I glanced around seeing all of the different plants, flowers and trees. "Niall really out did himself with this one."
Sadie giggled, "He did it for me." I lifted my eyebrow at her again. "I like being outside. It gives me comfort. I feel like I can breathe out here." I still held a confused expression. "I spend a lot of time here when Niall is home. Sometimes, on my bad days, it helps to be outside."
"You keep saying that "bad days". Why do you have so many bad days?" I asked more to myself than to her. She frowned and looked away from me. "You know what? Never mind. Not my business." I stated even though I really did want to know. "Tell me about growing up with Niall." I changed the subject.
"What do you want to know?" Sadie laughed quietly.
"Anything you want to tell me." I replied with a smile. I loved hearing her laugh. It was a light and airy sound. The light in her eyes was a great thing as well. "What did you guys used to do for fun, before he auditioned?" I asked, trying to make it easier for her.
"We would just hang out. Go to the park near my house. I would go to his house and we would play. When we were really little, I was able to get him to play house with me. It was funny because he would always get so mad at me because he was never the daddy. He was always the baby and one of my dolls was the daddy." She chuckled as she spoke. I watched her eyes and it looked as though she was recalling the memory. "And we would play pranks on Greg, like, all the time. He would get so mad when Niall and I would put things in his glasses or one time..." She began with a small laugh. "We duct taped Greg's door shut so he couldn't get in. Then we moved all of his stuff around. His bed, his dresser, his bookcase. All of it. We crawled out the window and went back to my house. Bobby and Maura yelled at us for a good hour for that."
"Ah, good ol' Bobby Horan." I mused.
"Bobby is a great guy. He and Maura are more like my parents than my actual parents." Sadie sighed a little bit.
"Great people." I agreed. I didn't want to make her upset by asking about her parents. "What else would you do?"
Sadie shrugged, "When we got older and my dad got me a car, Niall and I would drive around for hours blasting music and singing along. The boy does have talent that's for sure. And he used to come over and play his guitar for me all the time. I loved when he did that. When I would have bad days back then, he would sit outside my bedroom door with his guitar and sing to me through the door."
"It sounds like you guys are more than friends." I informed her quietly.
She shook her head, "Yeah. No. We tried that. It's not how we're supposed to be."
"What do you mean you tried that?" I laughed. "You said gross last night."
"Niall doesn't like to talk about it. It makes him uncomfortable. And a lot of his girlfriends get really upset when they find out about it. So we don't talk about it. I think he regrets it a little bit but honestly, I think that our friendship is better."
"You guys don't have any residual feelings?" I inquired shyly.
Sadie chuckled, "No. Not like that. We're like brother and sister. He's my guardian and I'm the pain in his ass." I laughed as well. "Harry is there a reason you're asking me this?" She sounded a bit nervous.
"No." I lied. "You and Niall just seem really close is all." Sadie eyed me for a long moment before nodding. "If you and Niall have been friends that long, why didn't I meet you when I went to Ireland or at the X-factor auditions?" It was a question that had been nagging at me since the night before.
"Um I didn't go to the auditions. There were too many people. Niall didn't want me to freak out. And I wouldn't have been able to handle it if I would've heard them tell him no. And when you came to Ireland, I was...really sick and I was in the hospital." She explained. I nodded, not knowing what to say. I wanted to ask her why she was sick but it was rude. "He loves you boys so much. He really does." Sadie smiled down at her hands.
"He loved you first." I murmured. There was a kind of sadness in her eyes.
She looked up at me with grateful eyes, "I know." We were both quiet for a long moment. "I'd ask you to tell me about yourself but Niall never shuts up about you and Liam and Louis." We both laughed a little. "I'm glad he has you guys and isn't doing this alone. He's so shy sometimes and I worry about him a lot."
"Why is that?" I inquired.
"Because Niall...he is a very loving and goofy kid. He likes to see the good in people. I freaked out on that girl because of what she said about Niall. I worry that one day he's going to...trust someone he really shouldn't and that he will suffer from it while the other person gets benefits." She looked off into the distance. "I don't want him to be taken advantage of."
"We won't let him. We look out for each other." I assured her. She nodded and leaned her head against my shoulder. I smiled a bit at the feeling. Then I noticed something. "Jesus, you're shaking." I hadn't noticed how cold she was before. I quickly removed my jacket and draped it over her shoulders.
"Thanks." She smiled weakly. She pushed her arms into the sleeves and pulled it around her body. She sighed a bit then blushed.
"What? Why are you blushing like that?" I asked teasingly.
"You're jacket smells really good. And it's really warm." Sadie replied with a quiet giggle. I laughed and thanked her. She moved a bit closer to me. "What are you planning on doing on this break? Niall and I are going home, to Ireland soon. We're going to stay there for a couple of weeks. For Christmas and all."
"Um, I'm not planning on doing anything right now. Sleeping in and just doing whatever. I'm supposed to stay with my mum for a bit. Other than that, I have no idea. And I like it that way. Maybe spend some time on my photography or try other forms of art. Not sure." I replied honestly.
"Maybe, while Niall and I are home, you could come visit us?" Sadie suggested.
I nodded, "I could do that. Love to see Bobby. Maybe he'll have a lesson for me."
Sadie laughed again, "Good old Uncle Bobby and his life lessons. You know what he told me the last time I saw him?" I urged her to tell me with a quiet hum. "The big city is appealing. But what's appealing may not always be beautiful."
"Some one doesn't want you to stay in London." I chuckled.
"Probably not but at least with me here, someone would be looking out for Niall." She stated then giggled. "He knew I had him with that one. I like the city but at the same time. I wouldn't be here if Niall weren't here."
"You really love Niall, huh?" I asked after a moment.
"My love for him is the only payment I have for him taking care of me the way that he does. There are a lot of days when I realize that I wouldn't be here if it weren't for Niall." She smiled but her eyes were a bit sad. I frowned. She was lonely. I could see it in her eyes. Lonely and hurting. I wasn't sure of what happened to her but I didn't like seeing those emotions in her eyes.
In the next second, I gathered all of my courage. Niall was going to be extremely mad at me and maybe not speak to me for a while. But I had no intention of letting this beautiful girl with a loving heart be lonely.
"Do you...Would you like to..." I began but was cut off by Niall yelling for Sadie.
"DeeDee! DeeDee!" Niall yelled running toward us. I groaned quietly. He was going to yell at me and be angry when all I did was try to make her more comfortable. "Where have you been? I've been looking everywhere for you for an hour!" Niall shouted at her. He was worried and angry.
"I'm sorry. I panicked and couldn't find you. Harry brought me out here so I could calm down." Sadie spoke lowly to him. I waved meekly at Niall, trying to look as innocent as possible even though she was wrapped in my jacket. Niall sighed and embraced her as she stood.
"Are you okay?" He asked calmly. But as he looked over at me I could see that he was mad at me. I rolled my eyes and turned my face forward.
Sadie's voice sounded light as she replied, "I'm fine, NiNi." Niall squeezed her once more then released her. "It's a good thing I found Harry though. I don't think I would've lasted much longer had I not found him." Sadie stated looking back at me. She smiled brightly at me. I couldn't help but return the gesture. She was very sweet tonight.
Niall sighed, rubbing the back of his neck, "Thanks Harry." I gave a single nod then stood.
"Hey. I'm gonna get going. I should go see my mum tomorrow." I informed Niall and Sadie quietly. Sadie frowned a little but quietly agreed.
Niall gave me a quick hug, "Okay. Call me when you get back from your mum's. We'll talk more about the boys holiday so DeeDee can finish up the planning for us." I agreed to the proposition. Niall turned to Sadie as I walked away, "Louis is going home too. Do you want me to ask him to drive you back to your flat?" I watched over my shoulder discreetly. Sadie didn't appear to happy about the suggestion but took it. She obviously wanted out of the party.

I returned to the living room to see Niall and Sadie speaking to Louis. Sadie appeared ridiculously uncomfortable being so close to Louis and Liam. When Sadie caught sight of me, she rushed to me, leaving Louis and Liam confused and Niall distraught.
"Hey." I smiled down at her when she wrapped her arms around my waist and gazed up at me. I tried to focus on anything but the feeling of her body being pressed to mine. I would've been extremely embarrassed if I had sprung wood while she was looking to me for comfort.
"I don't wanna go with Louis and Liam." She whispered to me. I lifted my eyebrow at her for the third time that night. Sadie blushed, "Um, can you bring me home?"
"Sure." I grinned at her. I was thrilled she wanted to be around me. That I was almost as much a comfort to her as Niall was. Sadie smiled widely then dropped her forehead to my chest. I wanted to hide a smile seeing the way Niall was looking at me but I just couldn't. I stuck my tongue out at him. His face flushed red with anger. I wound my arms around Sadie's shoulders and squeezed her gently. "Come on. Let's go." I said releasing her. She nodded and unwound herself from my waist. I followed Sadie back to Niall, Louis and Liam.
"Harry's going to bring me home." Sadie whispered to Niall. Niall replied to her in Gaelic. Sadie huffed, "Stop acting like that." Niall grunted and kissed her forehead firmly. "I love you. I'll see you tomorrow." Niall sighed heavily and let her go. Sadie turned to Liam and Louis, "Lovely to see you boys. I'll see you some other time, yeah?" Liam and Louis nodded with smiles. I took my turn to say goodbye next. I hugged Liam and Louis. I turned to Niall only to have his angry eyes burning into me.
"What?" I asked quietly as to not alert Sadie. She didn't need to know that Niall and I were arguing over her.
"Harry, I asked you to stay away." Niall replied lowly.
"She was panicked earlier and she's panicked now. I'm only helping because she asked me too. Just chill. I promise. I'm not doing anything." I assured him the best I could. He looked over at Sadie with curious eyes then nodded. "I'll get her home in one piece. I promise." I stated with a chuckle. Niall mumbled a thanks. "Come on Sadie. Let's get you home." I smiled at her. She nodded and moved for the front door.
"Heya DeeDee!" Louis called out as we reached the threshold. Sadie and I both looked back at him. "You look cute in Harry's jacket." Louis chuckled. Liam and I both laughed a bit when she looked down and blushed.
"Thanks." She responded shyly.
"Come on." I laughed again pushing her out of the room.
