Lavender & Roses

XXIV

"Sadie, come on, babe! We're gonna be late!" I hollered down the hall to her bedroom. I heard her drop something and swear quietly. I chuckled at the sound of the expletives coming out of her mouth. I made my way down the hall to the bedroom. "Are you okay, Sade?" I inquired seeing her struggle with her bag. She nodded and slung the bag over her shoulder. "Do you have everything? I packed your extra meds in my stuff, just in case." I informed her quietly.
"No. I think I have everything." Sadie answered quietly. I nodded and took her hand in mine. I led her toward the door. "What did you tell Niall you were doing for the next couple of days?" She asked me.
I chuckled, "The truth. I'm going to see my mum. " I lifted my eyebrow at her, "What did you tell him?"
"Mandatory work retreat." She shot back quickly. I laughed and shook my head at her. "What? I don't want to hear anymore of his "you and Harry only want each other for the booty" lecture."
I smirked at her, "I do love your butt."
"Good. I love yours too." She grabbed my rear gently, making me jump with surprise. I gave her a shocked expression. Sadie giggled, "I just want him to relax. I'm doing just fine."
"I know, baby. He'll cool off soon. Just give him time. He might not like that I'm taking over a little with being your comfort. It's just...he's having a hard time letting go." I explained.
Sadie squeezed my hand as we left her flat, "I don't wanna talk about Niall. We're supposed to have fun and enjoy seeing your mother." Sadie then grumbled, "I can only worry about one or the other." I chuckled and pulled her into my side as we locked up her flat.

Sadie sat beside me in the car silently. I could tell that she was extremely nervous. The tension was rolling off of her in waves. I kept reassuring her that my mother would love her if she would act like herself, the way she was with me. I knew for a fact that Gemma would adore her. I knew she would have an amazing time with my family. Sadie was still unsure.
"Harry, can you pull over please?" Sadie inquired, her face ghostly white. I looked at her with concern and nodded. After pulling onto the shoulder, I shut the engine off.
"Is everything okay? We're only like five minutes away from my mother's." I informed her, still worried about the shade of her skin.
"I feel like I am going to be sick. Roll the windows down?" Sadie's voice was shaky. I did as she requested and rolled the windows down. She took off her cardigan and leaned her head back. Sadie breathed deeply trying to calm herself down.
"Sadie, it'll be okay. You're making yourself sick. Stop thinking about what could go wrong. Just stop thinking." I stated softly. She nodded and tried to push all of the thoughts from her mind. "Hey, think about the first time we kissed. The electricity that passed between us under that mistletoe." I recalled the memory for her. Her breathing steadied and the color came back to her skin slowly. "Better?" I inquired as she opened her eyes to look at me. Sadie nodded and smiled weakly. I leaned over and pressed my lips to hers softly. "It will be okay." I assured her once again.

I pulled into the drive way of my mother's house. I sighed when I saw that my mom and sister were looking out the window in a snooping manner. Sadie unbuckled her seat belt and opened the car door.
"Hey, baby, get back in for a second." I requested. Sadie nodded and closed the car door. I looked at Sadie lovingly. "Talk to me for a minute. Tell me what you're thinking."
"I still feel like I'm going to be sick but it's not as bad. I wanna meet your mother but I feel like...I just want her to like me for me and not hate me because I'm sick." Sadie explained.
"First off, my mother couldn't hate anyone, even if she tried. Second, I've not told my mom about all of that. It's your story to tell, not mine. If you want to tell her you can but you don't have to." I explained gently. "No matter what happens here, I'm not going to break up with you. I adore you and your company. I love all of the conversations and fun we have. Niall is wrong saying that this is just a booty call kind of thing. I really like you, wanna be with you. Okay?" I added with a sweet smile. Sadie blushed and nodded slowly. "Can I kiss you now?" I asked meekly.
"I wish you would." She grinned. I leaned over and pressed my lips to hers gently, placing my hand on her face. Sadie gripped my wrist gently as I deepened the kiss, opening her mouth with my own to let my tongue slide against hers. Sadie hummed quietly enjoying the feeling of my lips and tongue. I backed out of the kiss slowly then placed a few short sweet kisses on her. "Can we go in now?" She asked just above a whisper. I agreed with a nod and we got out of the car.

As I opened the door to the house, I noticed my mum and sister racing away from the window where they'd watching Sadie and I. I walked inside, pulling Sadie in behind me.
"Mummy!" I shouted kicking my shoes off by the door where I had every time I'd visited my mother.
"In the family room!" My mother called out. I took Sadie's hand in mine when she stood up from removing her shoes. I pulled Sadie close then draped my arm over her shoulders. WE entered the family room to find my parents and sister sitting and chatting. My mother stood as did my step-father. I dropped my arm from Sadie's shoulders and took a step away as my mother came toward me. My mother hugged me tightly and kissed my cheek gently. "Oh my baby." She cooed, squeezing a little bit tighter when I wrapped my arms around her.
"Hi Mummy." I smiled letting my eyes slide closed as she kissed my cheek again. My step-father shooed my mother away and hugged me tightly as well. "Hi Robin." I chuckled. Robin looked at me then nodded towards Sadie. "Mummy, Robin. This is Sadie. Sade, my mother Anne. And my step-dad, Robin." I stated.
"It's wonderful to meet you, Sadie." My mother smiled before hugging her tightly. I wanted to stop her but I knew it was too late.
Sadie hugged her back, "You as well. Harry speaks of you often." I was shocked that she hugged my mother back.
My mother released her, "Hopefully, all good things." Sadie gave a single nod along with a giggle. Then it was Robin's turn. He held his hand out to Sadie. Sadie shook his hand gently, the way a proper, Irish girl would.
"Sir." Sadie greeted Robin politely.
"Sadie. It's nice to meet you. Harry is quite fond of you." My father spoke in his deep and authoritative tone.
"And I of him, sir. He's a wonderful man." Sadie spoke in almost a shy tone. Gemma jumped up from the sofa and raced to me. I hugged her tightly, lifting her feet off the floor for just a moment. Sadie stood next to me awkwardly as I bear hugged my sister.
"Hi! I'm Gemma!" My sister greeted Sadie brightly, holding her hand out.
Sadie placed her hand in Gemma's, "Sadie. It's really nice to meet you." I held back a chuckle at the nervousness in Sadie's voice. "Harry talks about you a lot." Sadie giggled a bit more. Gemma shrugged, like she knew it was true. My mother shook her head and smiled.
"Wow, Harry." Gemma gazed up at me. "I know you said she was "absolutely gorgeous" but she's stunning." Gemma complimented Sadie. Sadie's cheeks turned a fire red. "I love the color of your hair! How do you do that?" Gemma asked Sadie quickly.
"Oh, um, a few different ways actually, depending on the shade of lavender I want. This time I just left toner on it for a longer period of time." Sadie explained. "There's also this great shampoo that adds color to your hair. I love it for just touching up the color when my hair is a brighter lavender." Sadie seemed relaxed as she spoke to Gemma. I could help but smile at the exchange between them.
Gemma grabbed Sadie's hand, "You should show me. Come on." Gemma tugged Sadie off toward the sofa, pulling Sadie down to sit next to her. I stepped further into the room, wanting to make sure that Sadie was okay.

It was difficult to contain my happiness as I watched my sister and Sadie sit and talk like they'd been friends for years. I was even happier to see that Sadie didn't mind Gemma sitting so close to her. Gemma had her feet pulled up onto the sofa and was nestled into Sadie's side as they talked about whatever they were looking at on Sadie's phone.
"I like how you're okay with your sister taking all of your girlfriend's attention." My mother laughed softly. I leaned back on my hands as I sat on the floor, watching the two girls giggle and talk quietly.
I shrugged, "I get most of Sadie's attention all of the time." My mother gave me a curious look. I chuckled, "I want them to be friends."
"We're friends now!" Gemma shouted at me from the sofa they were sat on. "Right, Sadie?" Gemma beamed at her. Sadie blushed and nodded.
"I've no complaints about it." I smiled warmly at Sadie. She nervously tucked her hair behind her ear and pursed her lips. I lifted my eyebrow at her, wondering what was going on in her mind. She looked relaxed but her eyes held an uneasiness that made me worry.
"May I use the ladie's room?" Sadie spoke softly to Gemma. Gemma sat up quickly and opened her mouth to speak.
"I'll show you where it is, baby." I spoke quickly, standing from the floor. Sadie agreed as she got to her feet. I threw my arm over her shoulders and pulled her into my side as I lead her out of the family room. "Are you okay, Sade?" I whispered, kissing her hair.
She nodded and looked up at me with loving eyes, "Yeah, I'm okay, Harry." I placed my lips against her forehead for a brief moment, before reaching the bathroom door. "I'll be right out. Go visit your mum." Sadie pushed off of me slightly. I gave her another concerned expression. "I'm fine really. It was a long car ride and I've been sitting for a bit again. I swear, I'm okay." Sadie gave me her most convincing smile. I glared at her playfully before letting her walk into the bathroom.

"Sadie, Harry tells me that you grew up with Niall." My mother spoke to Sadie kindly, trying to start a conversation. Sadie nodded slowly as she took a sip of her water. "So you're from the same town in Ireland?" My mother inquired.
Sadie set her glass down, "Yes. Same town just different sides."
"Why? Didn't Harry say that you two were inseparable? I thought you'd be like neighbors or something." Gemma responded with a giggle.
"No." Sadie shook her head. "My dad's family owns like...I don't know some weird Irish conglomerate thing. We lived on the other side of town from Niall. He and I met at a football for kids thing. I hated football."
"You never told me you played football." I smiled at her.
Sadie giggled and turned pink, "I'm Irish. I thought I didn't have to say it." We all chuckled a bit. "We only do a few things in Ireland. We work. We drink. We dance. We love football."
"I thought you said you hated football." Gemma laughed.
"I hated playing it." Sadie blushed. "But I turn into a regular Irish woman when I'm watchin' football. Lots of swearing." Everyone started to laugh. Sadie's cheeks reddened more.
"How did you meet Harry? Beside being Niall's friend." Gemma asked of Sadie.
I laughed, "She yelled at me in front of a hundred people."
"Yeah. I did." Sadie shrunk into her chair a bit, "I got into a little...disagreement with a girl at a party Louis had thrown. Niall stepped in and tried to break it up. Harry defended me and I kind of bit his head off."
"Aw, love. What did you disagree with the girl about?" Robin asked sweetly.
Sadie's voice shrank again, "The young lady didn't understand that speaking of another person in such graphic terms wasn't okay. I kind of lost it at her." My mother made an understanding face. "I'm not really a fan of the way some girls like to talk about any of the boys." Sadie touched my face gently for a moment, "They're all so sweet. They don't deserve it." I smiled before touching my lips to her temple. Sadie's eyes slid closed and she leaned into my lips slightly.
"I love how close you two are. It's really cute." Gemma grinned at us. "I've not really seen Harry let go of your hand or sit too far away from you." Sadie dropped her eyes, looking at my hand that had been resting on her thigh for a majority of the dinner. A smile reappeared on Sadie's lips. "She keeps reaching for your hand." Gemma pointed out. "Reason for that?" Gemma snickered a bit as did my mother and Robin. Any explanation we would've given was silenced by the sound of my phone going off in my pocket.
"Harry, no phones at the table." My mother scolded me as I pulled it from my pocket. I apologized quickly as I silenced the melody. I showed the screen to Sadie. She nodded shyly at the reminder I'd set on my phone that it was time for her to take her final dose of medication for the day.
"May we be excused for a moment, please?" I asked my mother politely.
"Both of you?" Robin seemed a little suspicious.
I nodded, "Its really important. We'll be back in two minutes." My mother was still appearing wary of the request, but shooed us away anyway. I grabbed Sadie's hand and pulled her from her chair. I led her away to the bedroom so she could take her medications in private.

"What was oh so important that you both had to leave the table?" Gemma asked, still smirking a little.
"Gemma." I grunted, not wanting her to accidentally start a problem with Sadie.
"I had to take my medications. Harry packed the bag so he knew where they were." Sadie replied with an embarrassed smile. Gemma's face dropped instantly. I held back a smirk, serves her right for being nosy.
"Medications? Are you alright, dear?" My mother seemed genuinely worried for Sadie's well being. My face dropped again. I grabbed Sadie's hand tightly, letting her know that I was right beside her.
"Yeah. I'm fine." Sadie smiled warmly, but nervously. "Just a small case of a broken brain. It's all good." My mother and Robin looked confused. Sadie turned her gaze to Gemma, "To answer your question, Harry holds my hand and keeps me close to so I'm comfortable. I don't do well in what can be high stress situations. But you are all lovely, so right now, he's just being a sweet guy, always holding my hand." Sadie looked up at me then kissed my cheek.
"What do you mean broken?" Gemma asked quickly, leaning forward on her elbows. It was almost like she was half way to interrogating Sadie.
"I'm sick...ish. I have a couple of...disorders with my brain and I need medications so people actually can stand to be around me. " Sadie explained in a manner that I wasn't fond of. I huffed and rested my cheek on my fist. Gemma's lips parted like she was about to speak again. "Are you going to ask me what they are?" Sadie inquired with a weak smile. Gemma nodded slowly, seeing that Sadie was a bit uncomfortable. Sadie looked to my mother and Robin, like she was worried about their opinions. She took a deep breath and told Gemma anyway, "I have bipolar, OCD and anxiety disorders." Gemma's eyes showed her surprise and a small amount of sadness.
"I'm sorry." Gemma blurted, obviously sorry for pushing. Sadie's cheeks turned pink and she pushed her hair behind her ear. "I'm sure it took you a while to tell Harry. I shouldn't have just asked like that."
Sadie shook her head, "It's alright. You didn't know." Gemma smiled brightly then started a conversation with Sadie about some television show that they both watched. I relaxed a little once a genuine smile returned to Sadie's face. I glanced over discreetly. Seeing my mother's concerned face made my worry return.

"Harry, help me with the dishes?" My mother asked sweetly. I nodded and helped her clear the table. I kissed Sadie softly before following my mother with full hands, into the kitchen. I could hear Sadie, Robin and Gemma all jump into a conversation.
"What would you like to talk about Mummy?" I asked with a smile as we began placing the dishes in the sink. My mother shook her head. "Oh come on, Mum. I know you wanna talk about Sadie, out with it." I urged her with a laugh.
"I'm just a little...concerned, I suppose." She stated. I lifted my eyebrow at her. "You said that Niall was being very particular about the amount of time you were spending with her. Is that because of her being ill?" My mother asked quietly.
"I think Niall loves Sadie like she's his little sister. The way I love Gemma." I explained.
My mum gave me a worried glance, "Harry, she's a sick girl. Have you not though of Niall wanting to keep you apart for that reason."
"Mum." I groaned, not wanting to hear a lecture.
"Harry, I'm serious." She grunted at me. "She's a very sick girl, you've not been together that long. How do you know that being with her is something you can handle?"
"Mum, I've been with her long enough to know." I responded quickly.
"Love, I can see that you care about her but being with someone that is so...it won't be easy, not in the slightest. You've been with her for what? A couple of months?" My mum asked. I nodded slowly, letting her know that the time frame was accurate. "Have you actually ever seen a bad day for her?"
I nodded, "I met the girl after she got into a heated argument and then she yelled at me. I've had books thrown at my head. It's not like...I know what can go bad."
"Do you, sweetheart? Things can be much worse than that. I mean, there are two sides to what happens with her. Are you sure that you can handle when she can't get out of bed in the morning or can't stop crying for you think is no reason?" My mother asked. I opened my mouth but was cut off by more of my mother's rambling. "What happens if you act like a foolish boy and get her pregnant? You can't take those kinds of medications while you carry a child, what then? How about the child? What if your child has it?"
"Mum!" I snapped her out of her rant. "We've been dating a couple of months. We've not even found the courage to tell Niall yet and you're jumping to babies?" I chuckled. She stared at me blankly. "Mummy, I've not even touched her." I fibbed. My mother looked shocked. "I've come to terms with the fact that no matter how much I want her, she needs me to take every single step of this relationship slow." My mum nodded. "I've been doing all of the reading I can when I'm not with her. I want to make this work. I adore her. If I have to deal with some bad days, so be it. I'm not walking away, Mum." I smirked, "No matter how much you try to scare me." Mum laughed softly and shook her head. She knew that I was not about to back down.
