The Irish One

Stuck For A Bit

Its cold and dark. My chest feels heavy. I don't know what to do. I can not seem to open my eyes; they're too tired.

I hear footsteps; the hard wood floor is creaking in the hall. I knew that there was someone out there. Do I investigate? I open my eyes. Everything was blurry. I wasn't entirely at sure, at first, what was happening or where I was. I closed my eyes, again.

I heard mumbling.

I brought myself to crawl out of bed and over to my bedroom door. I had on a long night shirt that slunk loosely about me and knee socks- the only feminine thing about me is what I wore to bed. I grabbed the bat by my bed, turned the knob and carefully crept through the small space. It was quiet now.

What the fuck?

"You have been found." Someone said beside me. Their voice was suave and wispy; like cool winter air but with a stinging bite to it. I grew cold. I spun around.

No one was there.

My skin had begun to crawl. I instantly got cold and I had started to salivate at an uncomfortable rate.

Next thing I knew, I was on a an icy pathway. Trees overhung the cement walkway and all the grass lining it had been frosted over delicately. Everything was serene. So still. So quiet.
The visibility rate was a about a kilometer and a half, perhaps a little less even. Loose fog clung low to the moist earth; my socks were dry, however.

I look behind me. The same scene stretches behind me.

"The path that is behind you no longer matters, Avaline. What lies ahead is where your eyes should be focused." I hear. I spin around and around. I could not find the source of their voice. I mean, I kept turning and turning and turning, trying to find its where it was coming from. Everything was still, so still, too still to be natural. Behind me was the sound of rustling. I turn again.

Behind me were five crows. It was odd. Everything- the atmosphere, the dirt, the breeze, the dew that would slowly drip from the foliage- grew cold. Everything froze.
I do not know about you, but for me, this was not a good thing.

"AJ..."
The crows are talking to me.
"AJ?"
They know my name.
"AJ! Wake up!"
I shoot up into a sitting position immediately. I was in my room again, there was still rain pounding on my bedroom window, the covers were half way off and my was panting like I had just ran a 6 kilometer.
"AJ, are you okay?" Their voice said again. I rub my eyes to focus them and saw a pair of dark blue ones staring right back. It was that Louis kid from the night before.
'Yeah, I'm fine, I mean..." I paused for a moment. "Yeah, I'm fine."
Louis nodded slowly.
"Why are you even in here?" I ask.
Louis cleared his throat. "I needed to use the toilette and I heard you crying."
"Oh." I say. " I'm old enough to take care of myself. I don't need someone to check on me."
Louis rolls his eyes. "I never said anything about not having the ability to take care of yourself,"
"Whatever," I mutter. I sent him out so I could 'change'. I really only wanted to think.
Five crows. Five fucking crows.
I put my jeans on and my hooded jumper before making my way to the front room. The other four were spread up, crowed around the teli with the news switched on.
".. There us major flooding in southern Lancashire County. Towns like Preston, Kirkham and Freckleton are isolated due to the flooding of the superhighways that run through them. . ."
You have got to be kidding me. I switched it off, despite the protest I received from the boys and went to the kitchen where I saw Niall sipping a cup of tea.
Not that I have anything against that, it is just that. I like tea. But in a situation like this, he drinks tea?
"What are you doing?" He asks.
"Trying to figure out what to do with the five of you." I say surprisingly calmer than I felt. "What are you doing?"
"Drinking tea." Niall replies. "It looks like we'll be stuck here for a bit." Then the bloke proceeds to wink at me like he knew all along. "Do you want some?"
I am stunned. Do I want tea? Do I want a fucking cup of tea? When there are five other people in my house at seven in the morning?
"Did you really just ask that?"
"Yeah. Problem, mate?" I just stood there staring at the bloke blankly, when I didn't answer, he continued getting out another mug because, in his mind, I didn't object.
"Niall," I called timidly, but I am a timid person.
"Yes?" He asked sweetly, a little too sweet for my liking if I'm being quite honest. He set the cup down beside me before assuming to his previous position against the counter adjacent from me. The boy's eyes were different from the night prior. Even in the faint light coming from the parlor (for it was, still, fairly dark out) I noticed they weren't as blues. Which was a weird thing for me to notice considering that I have only been around the bloke under twenty-four hours and I hardly knew the boy anyhow. Maybe that's just how the minds of an eighteen year old works- after all I may be quite masculine but I'm still female.
Niall's eyes were grey and a bloodshot from what looked like lack of sleep. He has his blond and brown hair sticking up in different places and you could just tell that his night had been unpleasant. He, however, smiled kindly anyway- even made me a cup of tea.
I cleared my throat, "How did you all end up in Freckleton?"
He grinned to himself. "We took a wrong turn."
"But that's just it, you can't just 'take a wrong turn' into Freckleton. I mean its just hard to do because this town is so small, you know?" I explained. "Where were you all coming from?"
"The lads were visiting me in Ireland and we took one of 'em fairies over here a day ago. We were head'n back to London and though we'd do a road trip." He grinned. " And as for the lost part, I dunno. I don't have my contacts."
"Hmm, is that safe?"
"Probably not." Niall shrugged. It was quiet for a while between the two of us. "Thank you," He said out of nowhere. "For letting us stay here. It means a lot. I'm sorry for the inconvenience.."
I shrugged it off. "Eh, I know what it's like out there. Couldn't let you drive like that." I humoured.
I walk to my refrigerator and opened it up to find that the fizzy pops were gone. I had three of them left. I turned to the Irish behind me for an explanation.
"Sorry, we can get you more if you want." he gushed. I rolled my eyes. Damn right he was.
"Its fine, I can get it." I told him. "I needed to go to the store anyway."
"I'll come with." He offered.
I looked pointedly at the blonde of a second, flipping my bangs out of my eyes as I did so. "Fine. Be ready in five."
