Chapter Seven (Charity’s POV)

Kiara and I looked absolutely stunning in our dresses and high heels, if I did say so myself. I was wearing a brand new black cocktail dress I had gotten from Kia for my birthday. She was wearing her favorite lacy red one that she puts on whenever she goes clubbing. We both had trench coats over them too fight the chilly fall air. I had curled my hair and she had straightened hers and we had done each others makeup before we left. I had a nice smokey eye look while Kiara had winged eyeliner. We both looked very dramatic.
When Kiara and I arrived at the bar where we were supposed to meet Louis and his friend, it was super crowded and hot. We immediately took our coats off. The band was already playing, which made the crowd even more overwhelming with all of their excitement and energy. I had the feeling we were never going to find them in this mess. Everyone was swaying and dancing to the loud music, which wasn’t half bad, actually. I could feel the rhythm in my bones. I tapped my foot to the beat.
“Ugh. It smells in here.” Kiara wrinkled her nose. “Like beer and sweat.” She was right. The place reeked. We walked further into the bar as we talked.
“We will get used to it. Come on. Let’s find Louis and whoever he brought.” I had to practically scream in order for Kia to hear me. People were jostling us back and forth, bumping into us without apology. Rude.
I looked around in the crowd for Louis but all I saw were unfamiliar faces. “I don’t see him!” I yelled to Kia, who was getting a little lost in the sea of people.
“Do you think he blew you off?” Kia screamed back. Did he blow me off? Or forget? No. I couldn’t think like that. I had to trust him.
“No. Keep looking!” I shouted. We walked deeper and deeper into the bar, where it got louder and more crowded. Smellier, too. Pulses of sound waves hit me in the chest like spazmatic heartbeats. He should have been easy to spot since his hair was such an unusual color… Or so I thought. I was giving up hope of ever finding him.
“Are you sure this is the right bar?” Kia asked. I was sure. I was positive. I had checked the flyer a hundred times.
“Maybe we should just leave,” I yelled at Kia. “We aren’t enjoying this and it seems that you were right with your first guess. He probably blew me off.” What a waste of makeup.
Suddenly, Kia’s eyes grew wide. “Charity! Red hair!” I looked to where she was pointing at a man a few feet away. Sure enough, there was Louis’ red hair. Butterflies swirled around in my stomach.
I walked over to him in what seemed like slow motion. He had a drink in his hand and was rocking out to the music. When I finally reached him, I tapped on his shoulder and he turned around. He had a handlebar mustache and dark brown eyes that he couldn’t seem to control he was so drunk. This man was not Louis. “Oh! Sorry! I thought you were someone else. He has your hair...” I told him as I awkwardly pointed to my own head. I could feel my cheeks getting red.
He smiled drunkenly at me and said, “Did you phink I was, eh, what’s ‘is name… The guy up there?” He pointed up at the stage. My jaw dropped. There, singing for The Unknown in a jean jacket and converse, was Louis. My Louis. Kia was suddenly right beside me.
“Oh my gosh, Charity! That’s him, right?”
I smiled. “Yeah. That’s him.”
“What?”
“She said, ‘that’s ‘im!’” The drunk man yelled.
“Oh! Jolly good! Hey, that guitar player is fit!” Kia shouted. I tore my eyes away from Louis and looked at the guitar player. He was very muscular and had on a black tank top with a batman symbol on the front, which showed off his many arm tattoos. He was definitely Kia’s type.
I looked back to Louis and smiled and waved, trying to get his attention. When I finally caught his eye, he grinned into his microphone as he sang. His voice was gravelly and imperfect in the best way possible. If rocky road ice cream had a sound, it would be his voice. Kia and I danced to the music with our new wasted friend, jumping and pumping our fists.

After the concert was over, The Unknown started to pack up their instruments and Louis waved me over. I carefully stepped over Handlebar-Mustache-Guy, who had told us his name was Frank before passing out on the floor. Then I trotted to the front of the stage where Louis was. “Bring your friend and meet us out in front,” he said while packing up his microphone. “We will be there in a minute.” He nodded towards the guitar player Kia had found attractive.
I smiled. “Okay.” I started to turn away, but Louis grabbed my shoulder and pulled me in close. He smelled wonderful; musky and sweet.
“You look great tonight,” he whispered. I muttered a thank you, then smoothed out the black dress I was wearing. I felt dizzy.
I ran back to Kia, who was sitting at the bar drinking the glass of scotch I had bought her during the concert. I dragged her by the arm towards the entrance. She let out a squeak of surprise. “Put your coat on! They're going to meet us out here,” I explained.
“I'm so nervous!” She giggled.
“Good thing you're tipsy, then.”
