Sweet Hearts
Settling in.
When Amelia Dayton passed away, she had only but a small inheritance to hand down to her equally small family.
Her daughter,Margaret, received the beautiful pearl jewelry set with matching necklace, earrings and brooch.
Her son in law, Michael, had recieved the matching cuff-links that belonged to her late husband.
Her grandson, Jason, had received his watch.
However, it was her grand daughter, Ella Jacobs, who would receive Amelia's most prized and precious possession of all...
The small bakery, with which Amelia put her whole life into, and the small apartment nearby, in which she had spent most of her life in.
And it wasn't as if Ella was being ungrateful, because, of course she wasn't. Ella loved that bakery, and she loved that apartment, she had fond memories from visiting both. It was just that, when Ella went to culinary school, she had dreams of being head chef in a five star restaurant, having celebrities rave about her food, working with famous chefs like Gordon Ramsay.
So when she graduated, and the opportunity to intern at one such restaurant, Ella was over the moon with happiness.
That is, until her mother received that dreadful call, and in a whirlwind of tears, and grief, and sympathies, Ella found herself here.
Standing in the small entryway in her grandmothers apartment.
It had taken a whole month, after the funeral, for Ella to gather up the courage to come here.
It had taken a whole month, some light prodding from her father, and her brothers offer to drive her up here himself before she decided to come.
But now, standing here, her suitcase at her heels, keys clenched tightly in her fist, Ella felt all her courage drain out of her. She felt frozen, unable to move or breathe.
"It's weird isn't it?" Jason whispered from behind her
It wasn't until she felt his warm hand on her shoulder that she broke out of her trance.
Even then, all she could do was sniffle.
"Looks exactly the same.." Her brother continued talking low
"S'like nothings changed.." He brushed past her, walking further into the home
Ella swallowed the lump in her throat
"Yeah..." Her voice was barely audible
Jason glanced back at his sister before placing the box he was carrying on the kitchen island.
"You gonna be okay? Staying here by yourself?" He frowned, like he didn't like the idea
Her eyes snapped to his, and she managed a weak smile
"It'll take some getting used, but i'll be okay"
"Wish I could stay with you, but Trace.." he broke off
"Tracy will kill you if you're late for her parents house" Ella finished
"Right, speaking of which..."
It was time for Jason to go...
"You're gonna be alright, El, Ill come back on saturday and help ya" Jason gave her cheek a kiss, and her arm a squeeze, and then he was gone.
Ella took his spot at the island and dropped the keys on the counter. she hadn't realized how tightly she had gripped them until she noticed the marks and indents the keychain left on her palm.
she rubbed her hand and with a heavy sigh, looked around the small apartment.
she blinked the tears away, and turned back to the box and started to unpack it.
It was time to start settling in.
Notes
This is a super short chapter, sort of like a prologue. just to get things started a bit, a bit of back ground before the story really gets started, and we learn more about Ella and Amelia.
also quick disclaimer: the story is mine, the ideas are mine, but this is fan fiction, and obviously based on one direction with whom i have no affiliation to.
