Only Ever You

Lukes POV:

I knew this day was going to be hard for Ashley, but it was going to be hard for me too to stand beside her and feel completely helpless, nothing could stop her pain today, and I doubted she wanted anything to it was a part of her that she hated but needed to be who she was today.
We pulled up at the church, I felt uncomfortable in my shirt and black blazer, not my usual type of clothes but I mentally told myself I was being a complete idiot it was the anniversary of Graces death and I was worrying about something as trivial as how comfortable I was. Ashley looked so small and vulnerable sitting next to me in her black dress, I squeezed her hand, but she couldn’t sum up a smile.

I couldn’t say I had known Grace well considering the short time she had lived, but I knew how terrible the time had been for Ashley and her family, no child that young deserved to die. Ashton and Melissa along with Ashley’s mother and a group of friends stood in a small congregation waiting for us to join them, as she came closer they all embraced her and muttered words of comfort, I felt so on the edge like I didn’t really belong. “Luke?” Ashley’s mum beckoned me over and I leaned into her breathing in her familiar, comforting scent suddenly not feeling so alone anymore.

“Were just waiting for one more person” Ashley's mum said, I looked around confused it pretty much looked like everyone who should have been there was there. I shot Ashley a questioning glance but for some reason she wouldn’t meet my gaze.
Then I saw him striding among the gravestones, Calum, my best friend, or should I say ex- best friend considering we hadn’t talked for years and I had single handedly destroyed his wedding to Ashley. Ashley didn’t look surprised to see him, so she had known.

I didn’t know how to feel, I was slightly hurt that she hadn’t told me and curious as to why what was all the secrecy about? Calum came over to her family and began hugging them each in turn Ashton gripped his shoulder and said “Gracie would have wanted you here, she loved you she did” I felt a pang of jealousy at his words and the ease in which Calum had been accepted and how he looked like he belonged.

When he reached me and Ashley he completely ignored me and hugged Ashley tight, and to my utter astonishment she hugged him back tightly tears streaming down her face “Im so happy you could make it” she whispered just loud enough so I could hear “I wouldn’t want to miss this for the world” he replied, not taking the care to keep his voice low.

Okay, now I was angry who the hell did he think he was striding in here like he owned the place and still holding on to my girlfriend, who it seemed had invited him here! I reached forward and grabbed Ashley's arm causing her to stumble and untangle herself from his embrace. “Whats wrong Luke?” Calum asked finally looking at me “Scared if you leave her alone with me for two minutes she’ll come running back to me?” Rage flew through me, even though I knew he was only trying to antagonise me, it was working.
I opened my mouth to reply to him but Ashley raised her hands “Please can you just not?” she begged tears pooling in her eyes. I immediately felt guilty and so it seemed did Calum as he stopped glaring at me and walked to a distance away. “Sorry” I whispered into Ashley’s air wrapping and arm around her waist, she leaned her head on my shoulder and the service began.
