YOU AND I

“Shit, we’ve lost her,” I said, running my hand through my hair in frustration.

“Not we, you,” Niall stated as a matter of fact. I ignored him and walked faster in hopes of finding her again.

“Hey wait up. I found something,” Niall said.

“Not interested Niall,” I waved him off.

“Fine then go on searching for the girl whose name you don’t even know,” he said mockingly. I turned back and saw him holding a notebook. I reached for the notebook but he pulled away.

“Uh huh. Deal first,” Right, I thought and headed towards the cafeteria. He wasn’t going to forget that. He hopped happily beside me.

“Wanna know her name? Oh wow such a nice name,” he said, opening the book.
I tried to steal a glance, but he was careful to keep a safe distance between us.

“How did you even get her book?” I asked him at last.

“Well in her haste to leave the class she dropped the book and didn’t realize it. And so I picked it up and figured that we could give it back to her. At least that way, you don’t have to make an utter fool out of yourself when you try and talk to her,” Niall said proudly.

“Gee thanks,” I told him, smacking his arm playfully. “ But how come I didn’t notice that?” I was indeed looking, well no, staring at her the whole time.

“Guess you were too busy chasing after her. You didn’t even wait for me,” he nudged me in the stomach.

“Ouch, that hurt,” I hit him playfully.

By the time we reached the cafeteria, the other three guys were already there, intensely talking about something. It actually seemed like something serious till they cracked. Right when we had been the one to have a serious talk. We always seem to find the fun in everything.

And even Zayn was laughing heartily. He was clearly over his girl situation. We went over and joined right in.

I headed to buy food for Niall and me as well while the four continued talking. I looked around the cafeteria but there was no sign of her or her friend. I knew her friend. Not by name, but she was a good and kind person. She lives just down my street. I have noticed a couple of times that she always likes to help people out without them even asking.

After I bought food for Niall and me, I looked around one last time but there was still no sign of her. Sighing, I went back to our table and found three pair of eyes eyeing me judgingly and one pair of eyes looking at me innocently. And it doesn’t take a rocket genius to figure out why.

Niall must have filled them in about the details of my strange encounter with this ‘girl’ and my eagerness to find this girl and talk to her. I set the tray down and took my usual spot beside Louis nonchalantly. Niall started gobbling down his food instantly while all of us remained in utter silence.

After what seemed like an eternity although it must have been barely a minute, the guys broke into a laughter. Their laugh was so contagious that I had to join them. A few minutes later, we settled down and started talking.

“So what’s her name?” Louis started off first.

But before I could answer that Niall cut me off, “He doesn’t know Louis. I told you,”

“Oh yeah right. So how does she looks like?” Louis moved on.

“Wait, yes I don’t know her name, but Niall does. He found this notebook of hers and wouldn’t give it to me,” I said before anyone could cut me off.

Now three pair of judging eyes were looking at Niall. The spotlight was on him and he smiled sheepishly.

“Sorry lads, forgot about that one,” he said, smiling sheepishly, revealing the book. “The name’s Davina,” he said.

Davina. Nice name indeed. But before I could wander off any further into my thoughts, Zayn spoke up.

“Hey we know her!” he said exchanging a knowing look between Louis and Liam. “Yeah, Louis and I helped her out finding her locker and sending her off to her class. And surprisingly enough, she was in our second class with me, Liam and Louis,” he informed confused me and Niall.

“Yeah, she’s a sweet one,” Liam chimed in.

“And she has no idea who we are yet. So she’s not like other girls. She treats us like normal,” Louis finished.

“Oh wow,” was all I could manage. Apparently, I was the only one who hadn’t even gotten the chance to utter a single of word to her when that’s all I want. I bet if Niall wasn’t he would have met her too. And right at that time the stupid school bell rang.

“Ok lads we’ll meet later,” Louis said and waved. We waved to each other and went our separate ways. Zayn was with me this time. We had all the same classes till the end of the day. So I don’t have to face isolation for another time of the day.

It’s only for today, I reminded myself. Since we were in the school band, we had the privilege of getting the same timetable from the second day of the school every year. And that was the best part we didn’t have to separate ways starting the next day. And I couldn’t wait for it. First we went to Zayn’s locker and then we headed to mine.

“Wait, isn’t your locker no 58?” Zayn asked me all of a sudden.

“Yeah why?” I got curious.

“No nothing. Just asked,” he said, smile playing on his lips.

I started to ask him when I saw the reason for his smile. The girl I freake-, no wait I know her name now, Davina was there. Her locker was beside mine! Zayn nudged me and shrugged playfully. I was too happy to hide my excitement. I was grinning from ear to ear like the total idiot I am. She hadn’t noticed me but her friend did and gawked.

My guess, they were talking about me and she might have known about who I was by now. But still I had to talk to her. I turned to Zayn and he mouthed 'Go’, wishing me luck. And I turned, starting walking towards her with my heartbeat slowly increasing with every step I take.
