Sarena was downstairs waiting on me to get some warmer clothes on. I asked her where her sister was and she replied that they were all outside on the side walk waiting for her. I didn’t know it was more than one, but that was okay I guess.
As I zip up the heavy coat and put the beanie on my head, I begin the trip down the stairs. Once I got closer to the foyer I saw that Sarena had relocated from the living room to the door again, leaning against it as she waited.
‘’I’m almost there love.’’ I say as I notice she was looking a little impatience. She doesn’t say anything, just stands straight up and lightly twirls around with a gentle smile on her face.
‘’Okay, let’s go.’’ I say as I open the door, motioning for her to go ahead of me and she does so.
I shut the door, not worried about locking it, I wasn’t going that far anyways. As we stepped off the front steps I saw a few dark figures standing under a street light across the road.
My heart hurt to know that there were people who didn’t have a warm place to sleep at night. I was going to change that for them though, I am completely determined to fix it.
“Harry.’’ Sarena’s sweet voice says softly.
‘’Yes, darling?’’ I ask as I look down at her as I adjust my scarf around my neck, it was freezing cold out here.
‘’Can I.. can I hold your.. your hand.. I’m scared.. of the dark.’’ She whispers nervously.
‘’Sure love.’’ I say with a light smile as I extend my hand out to her.
She gladly takes it and I squeeze her hand tight, making sure she knows I’m here with her and everything was going to be okay.
I heard a sigh of relief come from her as she got closer to me, as close as she could without bumping into me. She was like anyone other small child, she wanted and needed to know that everything will be okay.
As long as I have her hand, everything will turn out fine, in her mind. Therefore, in my mind too.
‘’Be careful.’’ I mumble as we reach the sidewalk, there could be ice covering the concrete, but it as of now it looked clear and fine.
I didn’t take the time to look both ways because it was almost eleven o’clock and surely no one would be out this late in this weather, at least not where I live which is technically outside of New York City.
Sarena and I hurry across the street and finally reach the huddle of freezing girls under the street light.
My eyes were welcomed with three girls, one of them not looking much older than Sarena.
‘’Alison.. they didn’t answer.’’ Sarena says as she keeps a tight grip on my hand.
One of the girls, the oldest one, looks up to meet my gaze. Her lips lightly part as she stares a tad longer, but it was fine by me.
‘’I assume you’re Alison? Um, Sarena here told me that you all didn’t have anyone to stay tonight.. I have three guest rooms.. I’d be honored to let you stay as long as you need.’’ I say, watching the steam leave my mouth, a result of the cold ass weather.
‘’I.. Yes, I’m.. Alison.’’ She nods lightly as she steps closer, letting the hand of the younger girl go.
She smiles gently as she looks down at Sarena but soon back up at me, ‘’We can.. we can go on, we don’t need-‘’
I don’t even want her to finish that sentence.
‘’No, I want you to stay. You need to. It won’t be a bother, I swear. I just..’’ I sigh lightly as I look down at Sarena to see her looking back up at me, eyes so big and so beautiful, her little cheeks red from the cold.
As I look back at Alison, I feel this pain my heart. I knew for sure that if I didn’t let these girls stay with me tonight I would be lost for the rest of my life. I would hate to live not knowing what happened to them if they keep walking and leave me in the dust.
‘’You’re staying.. I’m serious, I want you to. I want to make sure you girls are going to be okay. It’s entirely too cold to be out here, don’t worry I can handle it. It’s nothing, not a bother at all. Just please.. let me invite you to stay. Please.’’ I basically beg of her.
I wasn’t going to lose battle.
She gulps loud enough for me to hear as she looks back at the two girls hugging each other for the warmth. She looks back at Sarena with a look on her face I could never be able to explain to anyone who didn’t see it.
She nods lightly as her beautiful blue eyes, just like those of Sarena, meets my gaze once again, ‘’Okay..’’
‘’I honestly can’t thank you enough.’’ Alison says as she steps through the door, shutting it behind her.
‘’Don’t thank me.. it’s my pleasure.’’ I say as I take the coat off of my body and hang it up so it can dry, thanks to the snow that is.
‘’You’ve met Sarena already, this is Carson and Presley.’’ She says as she points to each of the older girls.
‘’Carson, Harry sings our favorite song!’’ Sarena says with a big smile as she unzips her coat and begins to take it off.
‘’I know.’’ Carson says with a light smile, only one corner of her mouth moving.
‘’It’s warm in here.. feels good.’’ Presley says mainly to herself.
‘’Alright, first of all let me get you girls something to drink. Hot chocolate okay with everyone?’’ I ask as I look around at all the beautiful faces.
They look alike, but different at the same time.
‘’Please.. that sounds wonderful.’’ Alison replies for everyone as I motion for them to follow me.
I begin the walk towards the kitchen as the girls follow behind me.
‘’Now girls, you’re completely welcomed to go and watch cartoons in the living room. I don’t mind. Make yourselves at home.’’ I say as I look over my shoulder at them.
‘’Alison, can we?’’ Carson asks aloud.
‘’Yeah.. I guess, go on.’’ Alison approves and nods to them.
The three younger girls take the right doorway in the small hall, going back towards the living room. I smile lightly as I finally make it to the door of the kitchen. I push it open and hold it so that Alison wouldn’t get hit.
She smiles sweetly as I glance back at her. Alison had blonde hair with natural looking streaks of lighter blondes. But all of them shared the same eye color, so blue. Her lips were full and soft looking. Her smile was warm and kind. She was shorter than I am, around five foot four maybe.
Carson is a few years old than Sarena, I assume, and had brown hair, not too dark though. Presley had blonde hair a few shades lighter than Alison’s, just like Sarena’s.
But they were all beautiful for sure.
‘’I seriously can’t thank you enough, no one’s ever been so generous towards us before.’’ Alison says as I grab the box of prepackaged hot chocolate. I take a few packs out and sit them on the counter before turning to face her.
She was standing at the island, her eyes landing on mine as he notices I was looking at her.
“It’s my pleasure. You’re welcomed to stay as long as you need.’’ I remind her of this main key factor here. I wanted them to be okay, I wanted them to be safe.
‘’We’ll probably head out tomorrow..’’ She sighs as she looks away from me and down to her hands.
‘’No, please. I’m begging for you to stay. I know you have nowhere to go. I don’t want you to be out there in the cold.’’ I say to her, hoping and praying that she will just go with it.
‘’I don’t know, I’d hate for us to be in your way.’’ Alison glances up at me before lightly shaking her head to herself.
‘’You won’t be a bother, please.. I’d love to get to know all of you, I’d love to help.’’ I admit the truth, I wanted to help them and I wanted to protect them more than anything.
They don’t have anything or anyone but each other and I wanted to change that.
‘’I don’t want to take advantage of you like this, I appreciate it, but I can’t just.. I’m sorry.’’ Alison’s voice was cracking.
If she’s anything like me then that means she’s getting emotional.
‘’No love.. I want to give you what you girls need. I want to provide you with a place to stay at night and food and.. I swear, it won’t be any trouble. I have plenty and way more than I need for myself.’’ I say as I go over to her, watching as she turns to face me, her eyes red and watery.
‘’We’ve never been offered any kind of.. care before.. and I just.. I don’t want the girls.. to.. to get used to it.. since we’ll have to.. to leave.’’ She mumbles, sniffling lightly as she tries to hold in the tears.
‘’No darling,’’ I whisper as I put push her hair from her face and put my hand on her cold cheek.
Her blue eyes lock with mine and I lick my lips, trying to keep myself calm and collected, I didn’t want to get emotional so soon.
‘’I’m not offering you anything, I’m giving it to you. I want you to be safe and I want to make sure you have everything you need. And you never have to leave.. you can stay forever, as long as I know you’re okay and I’m the one keeping all of you safe.’’ I say softly, trying to get this through her mind.
I understand where she’s coming from, but I want to change that. I want to help her, I want to keep her. I want to be the one that they depend on, because I want to be the person they need in life. I need to feel that. I need to be that person.
I will be that person.
Alison doesn’t reply to me, but she keeps her eyes staring into mine. A few tears leave her eyes as she finally sighs, beginning and preparing herself to talk to me.
‘’I would.. be grateful to.. to accept that.. but I would never be able to pay you back.. for everything and be able to return.. the favor.’’ She says, tears slowly leaving her eyes.
I put my other hand on her cheek, using the pads of my thumbs to wipe those tears off her beautiful face.
I lean closer to her, just so she can feel the warmth leaving my body, so she knows I’m meaning every word that leaves my mouth.
‘’You will never have to pay me back for anything. I have way more money than I need anyways, money isn’t an issue. I want to do this Alison. I know we just met, but I want to make sure you have some where to sleep and that those little girls have food and water every day. I want to do this, so let me. Please. I’m not asking, I’m begging.’’ I practically whisper as I feel her warm breath hit my chin.
She sniffs a few times before closing her eyes tight. I watch closely as she sighs and opens her eyes slowly. She looks back up at me and nods gently.
‘’Okay.’’
