Don't Tell A Soul

1

"Goodbye, Anna." I sadly smiled to one of my best friends in the whole entire world.

"Don't cry, Marley. We will stay in touch, I promise. And don't worry we're not that far away so we can still meet up every now and then. There are plenty up sides to this!" She smiles, wiping my tears away.

"Then let me know, because this fucking sucks." I pout, plopping down on my bed that will soon be in another place.

"You'll get to be closer to Max. He lives in Sydney, doesn't he?" I nod. "And you'll make other friends at your new school. And this is all for your mother."

"What if she.. you know while we're there? Do you think we will move back?" I ask.

Anna shrugs. "It's hard telling, but just know that you've always got Max and I. He'll be with you while I can't."

I nod and engulf her in a hug. "I'll miss you." I murmur.

"I'll miss not seeing you everyday too." Anna says, understanding what I meant.

I hear a knock on my door, and turn around to be faced with my dad. "Time to go kiddo." He says sadly. I sigh, but I don't move. "Max is waiting for you out there. Go on, I'll get the rest of your things."

"Dad?" I ask, ignoring what he was saying.

"Hm?"

"How come we have to move to be with mum? I understand that she's sick but, you guys are divorced. How come we all just have to move?"

Dad chuckles. "Even though we're divorced, we still care for each other. We're still friends. She needs help, Marley. I don't think you understand how sick she is."

Suddenly my face burns as I start to feel inconsiderate. "I-I didn't mean to sound rude. I'm sorry."

Dad walks over and kisses my forehead. "I understand. I'll meet you at the car."

I nod and walk away. Anna I'm guessing, stood back to give my father her last goodbye hugs for a while. This sure was going to be different, and dad always says embrace the change, but I don't think this is going to be a good change.

I walk out of the front door for the last time and see Max leaning against the car admiring the house himself. "Hey." He smiles and walks over to me, wrapping his arms around my waist.
"Hi." I try to smile for him, but it doesn't work.

"I know it sucks, but your doing a good thing to be here for your mum. Plus I'm just a block away from you. You can sneak over anytime you want."

I laugh. "Wow are you persuading me to be a rebel?"

"Sometimes I like it when your dangerous." He whispers in my ear. I draw my face back just far enough so that my lips brush over his.

"Halt!" My father shouts, making Max and I jump. I hear Anna laugh in the background. "There'll be plenty of that for when I'm not around!" He laughs.

I too laugh, and push Max backwards in a playful manner. Anna hugs my father once more, and I wave to her, not wanting to cry again. I watch as Anna files into her car, and then I climb in the backseat of mine next to Max. I look back through the window and I watch my house get smaller and smaller in the distance. Everything that seemed so normal to me, my childhood, my life. It's all gone and now I have to just make up a new life and pretend that everything is perfect.

With that I sigh, and lean back against the seat. Max puts his hand on my thigh as if to tell me that everything will be alright and we tread the two and a half hour dive to my mother's new home.

~*~*~*~

"Hey." I hear Max's voice and him shoving my shoulder a bit.

"Mmmm" I moan, shifting my position to get comfy again.

"Babe we're here. Wake up."

I sigh, kind of frustrated that I had to be woken up. "Fine." I gripe and walk to the back of the car. I start grabbing my bags, and find a narrow path that leads to the front door. I take a step back and look at my new home. My breath actually hitches in my throat because I start to realize that this will be the first time that I've seen my mother in months. This time she'll be in a bad condition.

"You coming?" Max asks. I look forward to see that he walked in front of me without me realizing it.

"Y-yeah.." I breathe and take baby steps, biting my lip the whole time. The smell of honeysuckle daisies tickle my nose as I step through the lounge. My mother's favorite scent. I walk in all the way and see her sitting in an old recliner.

"Marley! Oh honey, it's been so long since I've seen you!" My mother exclaims and then coughs. At least she was strong enough to stand on her own though, seeing as how she practically leaps off of the chair to tackle me with a hug.

"Hi, mum!" I smile, inhaling her scent which seemed to be stronger on her clothes than in the house. "Good to see you."

"Is that dread I see in your eyes?"

"What..?"

"Why, you don't look happy to be here at all." Mum says sadly.

"No, ma. That's-I'm just tired." I lie.

Mum then smiles, "Then go get the rest of your things and go to bed. I set up a roll-away bed in your room until your actual bed gets here."

"You didn't have to. You should probably-"

"Rest? I know. But you never saw that stopping me did you?"

"Well, no." I laugh.

"Well what are you waiting for? Go on."

I nod and shuffle back to my car to get the rest of what we could carry in a car out. "Are my cheeks red?" Max wonders, rubbing them whilst grabbing some boxes from my hands.

"I can't really see them. Why?"

"Your mum was pinching them like they were going to pop off." He laughs.

"Oh." I giggle. "Well that's my parents for you. They love you."

"I'm glad they do. You're such a beautiful women and I wish you weren't having to go through this. I love you, Marley."

"I love you too, Max." I reply, touching my lips to his. Max puts his box to the side and fully wraps his arms around me. The kiss was just like any other kiss we've ever shared and I was okay with that. Just a simple kiss with no tongue or any of that gross stuff. Just a simple kiss to show his love to me.

"We should go back inside before your parents think something else." He laughs, and I smile and follow behind him with the rest of my boxes.

After we get them settled into my room, I sit down at the table with my parents and Max and eat. "I fixed your favorite, Marley. Spaghetti and pizza."

What can I say, I was a sucker for my mother's homemade pizza. "Thanks, mum. You didn't have to."

"Of course I did! I haven't seen my family in so long. And you all drove two hours just to be here to help me out. It's the least I can do."

"We we're supposed to be helping you out, Becca." Dad laughs.

"Then I'll return the favor."

"Women you haven't changed, have you?" He jokes.

"Not at all." Then they both have a heartedly laugh. A laugh that really reached their eyes. I hope that Max and I are like that in the future. Minus the whole divorce thing, but I really hope we care for each other as much as my parents still do.

After I walk Max out, I say my goodnights and find my way in my bed. Even though I doubt I will get any sleep tonight, I will probably lay here and think of how my old life could've been. What would I be doing now? Or funny thing would I be laughing at that Anna would say? I groan and turn to my side, realizing that I have to start at my new school tomorrow.
