New Friends

I fiddled with the bottom of my denim jacket as I awaited the arrival of Harry and his friends, by the doors of the venue. The crowd had already headed inside, and were milling between the bar area and the gig area, while I was stood in the chilly December air, with the roadies who had pulled the short straw and were on the 'box office' by the open door.

Nervous butterflies circled my stomach, and I subconsciously flattened the skirt of my black dress, my mind floating back to this afternoon and Harry's comments.

***

“This would look amazing on you.” Harry stated, holding up a dress against my body. “Why don't you try it on?” I laughed lightly.

“Now? Why don't we find a few other things to try on at the same time?”

“Because you're impossible to find anything for, and this will look amazing so we'll just get this one. Now go try it on.” Placing a hand on the small of my back, he steered me towards the dressing room, taking my bag from my hands and replacing it with the dress.

“Don't forget to come out and show me.” He grinned giving me a final push into the dressing rooms.

I was greet by a blonde short lady who was probably a year or two younger than me. Her eyes were trained on Harry in a quizzical fashion as she handed me my numbered tag and indicated me towards the cubicles.

I pulled the curtain across one cubicle and slipped out of my jeans and tshirt, before pulling the cotton fabric over my head. I sighed. Of course, it was too tight across my boobs and stomach. It always was the way. I pulled it off, and pulled back on my jeans and tshirt, when the thought of Harry's face floated into my mind, he would be so disappointed. I sighed, I just needed a bigger size, and I'd rather he didn't know. I had no real problem with my size, but I didn't like to draw attention to it where possible. As I glanced round the small cubicle, I saw the 'help' button. Life. Saved! I quickly buzzed it and a new girl appeared with a short brunette bob. I smiled gratefully at her.

“Hi, could you possibly do me a massive favour and get me this in the next size up? And if you could do it without the guy outside noticing I would be most grateful!” She smiled gleefully, and nodded.

“Of course! He doesn't need to be any the wiser!” She took the material from my hands and skipped down the corridor and out of sight.

Five minutes later I heard her voice outside the curtain and pulled it aside. She handed over the dress in the larger size, winking at me, promising he hadn't noticed, he was too busy talking on the phone to spot the dress. I thanked her enthusiastically before retreating into the cubicle and changing. This time the dress fitted like a dream. I ran my hands down the plain black bodice, and onto the black skirt with white circles of varying sizes. OK, so he may have been right. It does look pretty good. I look pretty good.

I pulled back the curtain and jumped a little to see the brunette stood outside the curtain. She started gushing when she saw me in the dress, saying how lovely I looked, and how my friend will love it. I smile, thanking her before heading down the corridor to show Harry.

He was still on the phone when I reached the entrance to the dressing rooms. I shyly tapped him on the shoulder and he turned round, a distracted look on his face, but as his eyes fell on me he stopped mid sentence and let out a breath. His cheeky grin returned to his face as his eyes met mine again. I felt my cheeks going red once more. The affect this boy had me was terrible!

“Told you it would look amazing.” I gave him a shy smile, my glance falling to the floor, I headed back into the dressing room and heard him return to the phonecall.

***

I could see two guys wandering up the street, glancing up at the name of each building they passed. Stopping every so often, to check back down both sides of the street. I moved towards the door, so I was a little more in view of the doormen and pulled my phone out of my bag. Clicking onto my call list I rang the number second from top.

“Hello?”

“Hey Sarah it's me.” I smiled at her familiar voice.

“Hey you! How's it going?”

“All good, just stood outside a gig venue waiting on some people, and there are a couple of guys heading this way so just wanted someone wonderful, like yourself, to be on the phone. I think they might be looking for here, but I'm not sure.”

“Ahh I see, the classic 'I'm on the phone so if you try and hurt me someone will know and ring the police' move. Good move. And I'm honoured it's me you called!”

“Well who else would I call?!” I laughed lightly. I risked a glance down the street. The two gentlemen were definitely getting closer, having still not found where they needed to be. One of them seemed to be consulting his phone, the other was reading the signs on each shop nearby.

“So how has today been? So glad you survived the Christmas Market!” Sarah asked laughing.

“Well! I very nearly didn't!” I replied dramatically.

“Oh no! What happened?!”

“Well I was fighting my way up the steps by the Floozie, when all of a sudden this guy is falling on top of me while throwing his and his friends' hot chocolates all down my top!”

“Was he cute?”

“Yes Sarah, I'm fine thanks for asking, just a little burnt from scolding hot chocolate!”

“Good, glad to hear it. Was he cute?” I sighed, laughing a little.

“Yes. Very. And he bought me a hot chocolate and a new dress to apologise. And he's coming to the gig.”

“Oohh so you've got a date?!” Sarah squealed down the phone. I glanced down the road again, to see the men where only a few shops away, I took another step towards the entrance, smiling at the doormen. They smiled back. It was reassuring to know they knew I was there.

“No Sarah, he's bringing about 7 friends with him.”

“Oh gosh, meeting the friends already, that's a tad fast.”

“It. Is. Not. A. Date.” I spelt out for her.

“Alright, alright it's not a date!”

“Thankyou!” I sighed exasperatedly.

“Uh, excuse me?” I glanced up and was met by two sparkling blue eyes. The two guys had made it as far as me. Blue eyes looked a tad familiar.

“Sarah, just give me a sec okay?”

“Loverboy there?”

“No, just hang on.” I kept the phone to my ear, but pulled the mouthpiece away slightly. “Hi.” I smiled slightly at the blue eyed gentleman who had spoken.

“Uh, is this where....” He checked his phone before continuing. “Everybody Looks Famous are playing? The...The Rainbow?” I nodded

“Yeah this is it, the guys there will sort you out with tickets.” I smiled nodding towards the doormen, who were watching are conversation.

“Uh thanks, but we're waiting on some friends, they have our tickets sorted, we are meant to meeting them here about...” The second gentlemen checked his watch. “Now.”

“Tom! Liam!” I glanced past the two gentlemen stood in front of me, who had turned at the sound of the voice and spotted Louis running across the road, waving madly, paying no attention to the traffic, causing several honks to follow him.

“Sarah, I think they're all arriving, I'll call you later alright?” I returned to my phone call, feeling more comfortable now that Louis seemed to know them, especially with the doormen watching.

“Okay, stay safe, have fun. DON'T DO ANYTHING I WOULDN'T DO! USE PROTECTION!” I blushed at her comments, grateful no one else seemed to hear them as I said goodbye and hung up, slipping my phone back into my bag, while Louis greeted the two guys.

“Roxy!” Louis pulled me into a hug, which I returned, before he held me at arms left. “Well don't you look amazing!” I blushed.

“Harry found it.” I explained. Louis nodded his approval and then turned to the blue eyed stranger to introduce him as Tom, and his friend as Liam. He explained that the others were running a bit late but were on their way. He and Liam quickly fell into an easy conversation, while Tom leaned on the wall beside me.

“It's a pleasure to meet you Roxy.”

“You too Tom.” I smiled back at him.

“So what can you tell me about the bands performing tonight?” I smiled at his question and started to run through the line up.

First on was Wait For The Fall, the newest and youngest of all the bands, having been around for only a couple of years, but were still very talented. Still very much pop punk, but they did like to try a slightly heavier style from time to time. The second band on was A Promise To Forget, a band who had started out pop punk but very quickly transitioned into heavy rock/metal. They were the heaviest band on tonight. Following them were the super talented Speaking In Shadows, who were somewhere in between Wait For The Fall and A Promise To Forget. Finally Everybody Looks Famous were the pop-punk headliners, who were just excellent. Overall a bunch of great people, who just want a chance to do what they love, and share it with anyone willing to listen.

I could feel Tom's eyes on me the entire time, every time I looked up he was smiling widely, his eyes sparkling as he listened.

“Who would you really recommend out of the line up?”

“Oh gosh, that's difficult.” I admitted, stalling to think. “Without a doubt Everybody Looks Famous are amazing, and I would say they're definitely worth a listen, but then as headliners, that kind of suggests already just how good they are. So I would probably go with Speaking In Shadows, because they are still very much underrated.” I decided.

“I shall make sure to give them a close listen.” Tom smiled, his hand slightly rested on the top of my arm. I felt as though I'd had a small electric shock as his hand touched my bare skin, I almost pulled away from him, but before I could, loud shouts from down the street pulled my attention away. I saw Louis look up grinning from the corner of my eye, before he took off towards the voices. I watched him go over Tom's shoulder, and soon the whole group were running towards us. Louis and a tall guy, with short spiky brown hair and shaved sides reached us first, both gasping as they stopped. They were followed by Niall and a shorter guy with shoulder length hair, while Harry and a third short haired brunette brought up the rear, both breathing easily. Harry's eyes quickly landed on Tom and I and he smiled brightly coming over, his eyes moved down to my dress, his smile becoming knowing, before his eyes fell on Tom's hand on my arm. I saw his smile falter seconds before he pulled me into a tight hug. I hugged him back, as Tom let go of my arm. Once we let go, Harry kept his hand on the small of my back and introduced me to the final three strangers. The first one had reached us with Louis was another Harry, the second who had arrived with Niall was Dougie, and finally Danny had arrived alongside Harry. I smiled and shook each of their hands.

“Right, shall we go in then?” Louis asked excitedly I laughed and nodded, pulling out my ticket. Liam and Niall moved to one side to let myself and Harry through as I led the way to the doormen.

“Hey Roxy.” The first one smiled.

“Hiya Joe, um, I think Roy left 8 extra tickets for me on the door?”

“Did he indeed? Let's see, hey Nick have you got any extra tickets for Roxy?” Joe asked turning to the second doorman. Nick nodded and handed over the tickets. Quick as a flash Harry pulled out his wallet and paid for them, I rolled my eyes at him and turned to Nick to get my hand stamped, before heading inside, while they others followed suit.
