Tips & Tricks

TIP 3

Writers block, and just when you thought you had your life all figured out. Your story is rolling, life is good, you're generally having the time of your life– That's when the writer's block comes in.

It slaps you in the face, humps your leg, takes a huge dump all over your story, and then skips merrily away into the distance.

But I say this is where we draw the line!

If you're stuck, or have ever been stuck, in the fuckery that is writers block, then look no further because I have the steps that will not only help your writers block, but will also pull a giant middle finger in the face of writers block.

10 steps to killing writers block:

Step 1, write something else...
It helps to give yourself a time out. Once you've given yourself a break, you can later return to the main project with a new mind set. Plus, you may even come back with a whole new story, too!

Step 2, eat a banana.
Whilst you were stressing over your writers block, you forgot to eat. I wouldn't be surprised if you can see your ribs by now. So eat a banana. Brain food is good, tastes yummy too!

Step 3, read.
I'm not saying that reading other fan-fictions means steal the ideas, but it will give will you some inspiration to write.

Step 4, think.
Think through your plot. A reason why you may be struggling is because you don't know where your story is going to be led and you may have lost track of the plot. Back up from the writing for a minute and think about where you want it to go. When you step back it will take the pressure away.

Step 5, change you point of view.
Be a reader instead of a writer. Read your story from the beginning and then ask yourself "as a reader, what do I want to happen next?". With this you could either do what the reader wants, or (if you're feeling particularly evil) do exactly the opposite and leave the reader shocked!

Step 6, music.
For most people, music does help writing and keeping the creative juices flowing. Just by sitting back and listening to a few tunes, you can easily get yourself going again. Use the vibes you get from music and project it into writing.

Step 7, full speed ahed!
Sometimes when the going gets rough, you need to get in your Land Rover and then run the problem down. Run it down until it is road kill. You really just have to force yourself to write, even if you aren't feeling it.

Step 8, write anyway.
Even though seven and eight are similar, they're both important. With this I'm not saying bully yourself, but why not check over the chapter and try for ten minutes? Sometimes all you have to do is give yourself that little push.

Step 9, hydrate yo' selv
Get some water. No wonder you have a headache!

Step 10, you've got a friend in me.
If you know people from this site, bounce your ideas off of them or talk about the story in general. Remember, everyone moves the fandom, not just one person on their own. This will help you refocus, reevaluate why you love this fandom and the people you have met. If you are a loner, like me, the forums are so helpful too. And if push comes to shove, you can even ask little ol' me (; <3

Notes

little bit of shameless advertising here, but I have a new story called An Abundance of Awkward. I'm so proud of myself, I always delete my stories and I think this one might be safe (:

If you could check it out it would mean so much to me <3
