Tips & Tricks
*before you start
Prior to starting your first story, you'll also need to clarify your first ultimate goal:
finishing.
Because what is a story without it's ending? If you drag on the life of your characters, as well as your story, it will all eventually end up in one of two ways:
- Your readers will eventually give up and die of complete boredom.
- Or, if you're still not convinced, your story will become so utterly long-winded and outdated that the world will most likely end and perspire before your story actually has the chance to itself.
So, that being said, keep that goal in mind.
Another important feature is to remember why you are writing in the first place. So, what made you join this site? Was it your love for writing, or was it your love for Harry Styles' fourth nipple? Could it potentially be both?
But hold your horses, people! Keep your answers to yourself for now, they'll be important in the long run, because now, with your intentions in mind, you need to ask yourself if this intention is worth it. Is it worth your time? Is it worth the reader's time? If not then stop. Immediately.
An online blog quotes, "Writing should be an indulgence, the chocolate fountain of your life, the huge treat you can't wait to get back to. The alternative world in your head, the one you're pinning down: that's what it should be. If you want to start writing because you want to start a new career– forget it. You can only do this with passion. Because you love it and you have to love what you write. If it pleases you, if it's something you would pick out to read for yourself, then it should also please others when they read it."
So if you're writing a fan-fiction just for the sake of glorifying Harry and his luscious 'green orbs', Louis and his dry humour, Liam and his shy-ness, Niall and his... Irish-ness– then just take a moment to think:
Is is this fan-fiction unique?
Is my writing one of a kind?
Will I ever really use the word 'orbs' seriously ever again?
If you are struggling with any of these predicaments then look no further, by the time I'm finished with you aspiring writers you'll be a pro, because there's SO much more where this came from.
