Strangers

Take me back to the Middle of Nowhere

Ashton's POV

Our mother went after her. I panicked, I didn't know what to do. But then I remembered I told her that I would go to any extreme to protect her. Mum was pushing the knife down to her heart, Amara was struggling to keep it from coming in contact with her skin.

I looked around the room for anything at all, and I found a gun. I looked at for a long while before I picked it up. I held it in my hands, trying to get a grasp on it; I've never held a gun before. I look back over to Amara and our mother, and I know that time is running out. Thankfully, I thought this through because if I were to use the gun, it would've went right through mum and hit Amara.

I speed walk into the small kitchen and find the butcher knife that we always hid under the sink. Slowly but surly, I sneak up behind my mother right when she nics Amara's side, and I shove the knife straight through her head.

Amara gasps at the sudden movement as our dead mother falls on her wound. "Amara." I say calmly, trying to get her attention. The small gasps of breath she takes is my response. "Amara, it's going to be fine, okay?" At this time, I believe she blacked out. Amara let out a small breath and her head it the hardwood floor.

"Shit." I curse under my breath and move my mother's corpse off of her. This is when I realize that not only did my mother hit her side, but the knife hit her in the right between her ribs. Suddenly, I don't hesitate anymore. My surroundings become more clear, and I knew we had to get out of here. I just killed my mother, and I sure as hell wasn't going to get caught for it. it's not like I was a killer. I barely got into trouble, I don't think I would know how to handle prison. Amara would be right there with me, seeing as she was right there with me. Threatening her and all.

With Amara in my hands, I rush her out the door, past the druggies- who at this point, I was glad they were on drugs so that when the police get here, they'll be too messed up to recall anything from the scene- and load her into my truck.

I take off my jacket and place it under her side, so that maybe the amount of blood that would be on my seat would be kept to a minimum, and take off her cardigan and wrap it around her body to possible keep in the warmth. I don't know exactly where I'm going because I can't go into a hospital with our mum's blood over my hands, and Amara with her side gaped open; that's just asking for them to take us now.

I stop on the side of the road and search for my first aid kit I had around here somewhere. One great lesson my father taught me, was to always keep safety items at your side, just in case because you never know. And he was right, there's no way I could've predicted this to happen.

I find gauze and a thick bandage and wrap it around her entire body. I don't even know if I'm doing this right, all I know is that I had to somehow apply pressure to her wound to make it stop bleeding so bad, and the less she bleeds, the longer she'll stay alive. Amara slightly whimpers as I raise her body up to guide the gauze underneath her. "I know, sis, I'll get you proper care somewhere. Just hang in there, we'll be okay."

Amara groans in response, and she struggles to keep her eye lids open. "A-Ash...it..hu-hurts.." Amara pants.

"I know it does, but stay with me okay? We'll get help." I assure her.

"W-where?"

"Amara, I don't know, but I'm trying to find it."

"Where's..mum..?"

Suddenly I find it hard to look her in her pain filled eyes. I look away and continue to bandage her up. "Sh-she's dead.. isn't she..?"

"You should be talking so much, your wasting your energy." I tell her instead as I finish the bandage. "Sleep, I'll wake you when I find help. I'm promise we'll be okay."

Amara nods, and lays her head back against the door frame. I sigh and wrap my fingers around the steering wheel so tight, my knuckles turn white. "You can do this, Ashton. You had to kill her. It was self-defense. It was either Amara or Mum." I say to myself and begin the trip all the way to the other side of town.

Obviously, we weren't far enough, but I had to get Amara better before we could take a plane anywhere. God only knows what would happen. About a couples hours later, the sun starts rising and my truck starts running out of gas. Luckily there was a large neighborhood right across us, but that was too risky.

I park the truck on the curb and sit for a minute, taking in my surroundings. Should I take my bleeding sister into this large neighborhood where many kids are probably playing, and expect these people to keep us until she's feeling better? I'm going to say no.

"Fuck." I whisper, slightly hitting the steering wheel, but not hard enough to wake Amara; not that it would. Then my eyes catch a view of a very nice, very large mansion on the top peak of the highest hill. I start my tuck back up and decide to drive it as far up as it would drive me until the fuel runs out.

I only get about halfway up the steep concrete hill, and my truck fully runs out. I drive it until it literally can't go anymore, and waste no time to put my sister in my arms and hike the rest of the way up to the peak. "Uhh.." Amara groans with every step I take.

"Shh. We're almost there." I whisper to her.

Amara continues to involuntarily groan until I finally reach the large porch step. I fumble for the knocker and knock with all I've got. I wait there for a minute, but nobody comes to the door. Maybe the house is too big to get to the door at the speed of light. Or maybe they don't know they need to get in a hurry. Thankfully, the door creaks open as slow as possible as Amara's weight starts to become too much for me after this walk.

"Can I help you?" The man with the blue hair answers the door. His eyes pop when he sees what I'm holding in my arms.

"I-I need help." I stutter, gesturing to Amara's body.
