And it won't be Long
Amara's POV
I wake up to the sound of ticking. Loud ticking. A ticking I knew all too well. Mum was doing her drugs again. It was always the same sound now matter what she decided to try. *tick tick* The sound was a piercing sound that never seemed to stop. I don't know exactly what it was that made the ticking, but I knew it was an awful sound followed by an awful outcome.
My older brother, Ashton peeks through my door I'm guessing to see if I was okay. "Meth this time." He said pinching his nose at the disgusting odor that revealed itself when my door opened.
I sigh and hold my pillow to myself. "It's going to get worse tonight. Who knows what she'll do."
"She won't do anything. I won't let it, okay? It's me and you and I will take whatever step I have take to protect you." Ashton says in that serious tone, that lets me know that he's serious.
I nod. "We need to go to school." I whisper, wiping a lose tear from my eyes.
"Don't cry. We're going to get out of here soon and it won't be long." Ash smiles for me. It always amazed me how he was able to keep his head up even in times like these.
~*~*~*~
"You guys are here early." Andy waves at us when we enter the school. "You're are only early when.."
"Yep." I answer for him, even though he already knew. Somehow Andy was one of our best friends. He was one of the only people that we were ever able to open up to and tell him about our situation. Honestly he took it really well, and accepted the fact that we didn't want him to take it to the authorities.
"Sorry guys, you know your welcome to stay at my place 'till it all dies down again."
"Thanks, mate, but we have to be here this time. She's trying something new; the ticking was back. We don't know what she'll be capable of this time, so we need to be there." Ashton answers.
"Well I can take Amara home with me. She needs to be safe too." Andy offers again.
"Uh no I'm completely fine. I can handle myself." I huff. It'd be great to be able to stay at another place tonight but, I don't want them to think that I'm so scared I cant even handle my own mother.
"Just looking out for you, sis." Ashton clasp my back, sensing the tension.
I roll my eyes, and head to my classes today, where I know I won't be concentrating. My grades are already going down the drain with everything I have to go through. I get surprised when I score a C on something.
The day slowly drags by and the familiar judging faces pass me in the hallways with the white walls, watching my every movement and waiting for me to mess up so they can watch me fail. Sometimes I feel like I'm on drugs. I get paranoid so easily and I always feel like everyone is out to get me. Sometimes I feel like I imagine things. Like sometime I imagine my dad. I never got to know him because he left before I was born, but Ashton knew him and he says he was just as bad as mum. I want to believe him, but the things I imagine about him are all too comforting in a sense.
"Ready?" Ashton asks me when I meet him on the sidewalk after school.
"Than I'll ever be." I sarcastically wink at him.
~*~*~*~
When we get back to the tiny flat we lived at, all the doors where wide open and the window were took of the hinges. Gnarly looking people hung around in the yards are were draped over the porch and on the floors. Ashton ad I share a look of discomfort at the new sight in front of us.
Yeah we've seen sketchy people hanging around our hanging around our home, but not this many people before. "W-where did you guys go?" Mum asks us in a giggly tone, obviously imaging things.
"School." Ashton answers.
All of the sudden mum jumps up from the couch, and holds a knife to Ashton's throat. "Mum!" I scream, all of the sudden in tears.
Ashton gives me a look that says to shut up as he raises his hands in defense. "Whoa mum. You don't want to do anything you'll regret. Just put this knife down."
Mum starts murmuring jumbles of things that we couldn't understand, then she turns around and puts the knife to my throat, still murmuring the unheard profanities. On instinct, I push her off of me but she comes back and gashes my hand open. Ashton yelps in surprise, and jumps on her back to pull her off of me. Mum falls to the ground but is still unstoppable; I guess it's hard to calm her down on so much of that meth.
Mum wobbles back up and lunges for Ashton, strangling him with her hands wrapped around his neck. "Mum, stop! Snap out of it!" I call, picking up the knife that she dropped on the ground.
"Or what?" She snickers. "You won't touch me."
"Not unless you try something." I warn. "Now let him go and leave us alone."
Suddenly mum starts violently shaking. A guess from me would mean that she was having a withdraw from all the different mixtures of drugs in her system. The mother I once knew was gone. This was not my mother anymore. She pounces across the room to where I stood and hold the knife over me, trying to push it down to puncture my heart. I place my hands on her shoulders and push back with all my might. My muscles soon give out on me, and the knife plummets in my side, almost nicking my heart. Excruciating pain explodes and I try to fight back, but ever move I make knocks the breath out of me.
My vision starts to blacken and I can hear my heart beating all the way to my toes. I faintly hear Ashton grunt, and I see his blurry figure holding a weapon above the women. The weapon comes in contact with the back of her head and a blade comes out the other side. The lifeless woman falls on me, pressing on my wound which makes me black the rest of the way out.
