Tell me if you love me

“All I want for Christmas is you” Mariah Carey sings from our radio which my mum has turned up to full volume. Everyone is smiling, it is as if Melissa’s return has brought life back into our house. “All I want for Christmas is you baby” I sing as my mother and I dance around the tables, were waiting for our gingerbread to come out of the oven. Today has been hectic, but amazing there is so much to do and I have been on my feet since 7 am.“Will Calum be joining us tomorrow?” Mum asks and Ashton wolf-whistles, I blush crimson “Shut up Ashton” I say smiling, Its just so good to see him back to his usual self. He winks at me “Of course he’ll be here Mum, he has to give his girlf- sorry fiancee a Christmas kiss” Melissa shrieks as she walks in the room “Engaged What! No way Ash! Are you freaking kidding me?” “And you didn’t tell me” she squeals nudging Ashton. She releases herself from his arms and comes over to me wrapping me in a tight embrace “Congratulations Ashley, you and Luke will have such a great marriage!”

There is a long awkward silence. “Melissa, hun its not Luke Ash’s engaged to um…its Calum you know the one who used to come round?” Mum says softly. Melissa turns to me her hand on her mouth “Oh,Ash I’m sorry I’m so stupid I just assumed it would be Luke” “It’s okay” I smile “A lot of people have made the same mistake” Inwardly I think, even I sometimes imagine I am marrying Luke not Calum, or maybe I wish.

Tears run down Melissa’s face “If only Gracie was here to see her aunty getting married.” I hold her hand “I wish she was here too Melissa” Thinking about Grace makes me remember how much she loved Calum she even called him Uncle, my stomach squeezes as I think of them both laughing together, how even at the very end of her life Calum could always make her smile. God, this is such a mess.

Calum rings on the doorbell as I apply my last coat of lipstick. I rush downstairs and groan when I see Ashton has already opened the door for him “So your’e Calum nice to meet you I’m Ashley’s big brother, otherwise known as the guy who will break your nose if you break her heart.” Oh my God he is so embarrassing. I put my hand over my face and cringe “Ashton” Melissa giggles pulling him away “Leave the poor guy alone!” “I’m sorry about him” she says apologetically “Im Melissa we’ve met before have fun Ashley!” she chirps and practically drags Ashton away as he sends Calum threatening glances.

“I’m so sorry about that he’s a little overprotective” I say humiliated “No, its fine I’d be the same considering what you’ve been through, I try to smile back but all I can think is I cheated on you with your best friend. Calum looks effortlessly handsome as usual “You look beautiful by the way” he says smiling at me “Thanks” I reply hoping he cant see the guilt on my face “Well,shall we?” he asks gesturing to the door and I take his arm.
