Tell me if you love me

Ashleys POV:

I wake up hoping yesterday was just a dream but it isn’t, with a wave of guilt I see Calum has left eight missed calls on my phone, as I sit there wondering what on earth to do my phone rings again “Hello?” I say “Hi babes” says Calum, God I am such a terrible person “Oh hi Cal” I say in as normal voice as possible “Ash, I’m so sorry for yesterday I hope it wasn’t too terrible” “It wasn’t great but I’m fine” I reply. “Who came did Liz and Luke come?” he asks “Oh I dont know I didn’t really see him” I lie way too easily. “Um..right” he says his tone changing “Because Luke said you guys saw each other and spoke” Oh God! Oh God! “I can’t remember properly Calum I was too upset to concentrate, Im sorry but I really have to go now, Love you” I blurt out and I end the call feeling like i want to curl up in a ball and die.

I would love to spend the whole day in my room wallowing in my own miserable state but because theres two days till Christmas Mum completely forbids it stating “Christmas is a time for family” this makes me angry and almost want to say What family do we exactly have left? This Christmas would have been our second with Grace and Laurel always came to our house for Christmas. Ashton hardly speaks anymore and is definitely not in the festive spirit, that is until the bell rings “I’ll get it” I say, anything to get away from the awkward attempt at conversation.
I open the door to a nervous but much healthier looking Melissa, for once it looks like she has made an effort with her appearance “Is Ashton in?” she asks shifting from one foot to another and biting her lip. I nod and step aside wondering what on earth she is doing here. I lead her into the front room and say “Look who’s here” my mother gasps and Ashton sits up completely alert. “We’ll leave you two alone” my mother says and ushers me out of the room.
When we are finally let back in Melissa and Ashton are cuddled up together on the couch, they both look like they have been crying, my mother and I give each other secretive smiles, maybe just maybe Christmas won’t be so bad after all.

I go outside needing a breath of fresh air, watching three boys across the road playing football, and then suddenly they begin to argue with the smaller boy “Suck it, Shorty” the older one says and pushes the smaller boy making him fall down, and I cry indignantly “Hey!” “Stay out of it lady” the short guy says springing back to his feet “I can handle this”
I just stand there shocked before I hear laughter “Oh Ashley” I turn around and my heart gives a swoop inside my chest. But its not Calum, Its not my fiancee, standing there in the last golden rays of the setting sun looking impossibly handsome.

Its his best friend

Luke is the one who’s just made my heart swoop. Im not even going to try to figure out what that was all about, or maybe I already know the answer. “What are you doing here?” I ask “Why I’ve come to see you of course seeing as you so rudely ran way from me yesterday.” God I hate him. “Well yesterday was a mistake so kindly leave me alone” I say with as much dignity as I can. “No, Ashley yesterday wasn’t a mistake, you getting engaged to Calum was a mistake.” he says “Im sorry but he’s not right for you” “And you are I suppose?” I bite back “Yes actually! I can’t even remember why we broke up for gods sake!” “I’ll tell you why because you couldn’t keep your hands off Christine!” I shout. “How many times do I have to tell you it wasn’t what you thought.”

“God Luke stop making up excuses! I loved you, I really did but you never loved me back as much.” “Thats not true” he says “Please Ashley let me explain, he takes my hand and I suddenly dont feel cold anymore, against my better judgement I nod my head.
