“Class, meet Michael Clifford who will be joining us today” says our teacher Mrs Smith, everyone mutters half-hearted ‘hellos’ Michael stands at the front of our class smiling widely at all of us, I can’t help but smile back he looks like he would make a good friend. Mrs Smith gestures to the empty seat beside me “Michael, sit next to Ashley please” He makes his way over to me and collapses on the seat beside me “Hi!” he says enthusiastically his green eyes glinting ‘Hi” I say trying to project as much enthusiasm as I can into my words, which is not very much considering the situation I am in now. Mrs Smith begins her lesson and I sigh inwardly at the craziness of the fact that my best friend is dead and I seem to have a stalker threatening me, yet I still have to do maths.

Its weird how I used t take for granted the fact that I had a best friend, me and Laurel were mostly oblivious to anything but our happy little best friend world, but now it hits me how alone I really am, even Calum is no where to be seen. I hear the tone which means I have a text and am scared to look at it, what if it is the same person. But I smile as I see Ashton’s name followed by: Hey! Im home for this week see you soon, I have big news to tell you! Even though he hasn’t got a clue how life has been for me this past month I feel relieved that Ashton is home, I always feel safer knowing he is there looking out for me.

I race home once the bell rings not wanting to stay a moment more than I have to. I run into the house and then stop, Ashton is there and next to him is his girlfriend, Melissa, and she is pregnant. Ashton sees me and grins “Hey hows my favourite sister?” he asks and pulls me into a hug. I hug him back but can’t help glancing at Melissa, she may have even become more beautiful since I last saw her, her long blonde curls reach her waist and her skin is glowing like she is lit up inside, the bump is small but unmistakable. I hang back shyly not sure what to do or say but she also envelops me in a soft warm hug and I breathe her flowery smell in.

“So Ash, who could have thought it, my baby sister an aunty.” says Ashton with a chuckle. “When..how?” I stutter “Melissa went for a scan two weeks ago and we found out” says Ashton “As for how it happened aren’t you a bit young for all the details?” I blush crimson as they both laugh. Mum comes in flushed with happiness “So, Ashton told you did he? Isn’t it a lovely surprise?” I nod and force a smile onto my face “I just need ti get a drink” I say and walk into the kitchen. Yes, i feel happy for Ashton and Melissa but I also feel a surge of jealousy, I was always their baby, I don’t want some new baby taking my place. As I enter the living room I hear Mum say in a hushed voice “Oh, Ashton you don’t know what its been like for us, for poor Ashley I’m so worried about her,first Laurel and now this boy, Luke. Im glad you came back when you did I was so afraid that something might have happened to her that night.”

I hear Ashton murmur consolingly and see Melissa embrace her, I have never felt so alone, so left out.
