Something Good Can Work

"Summer. Come on, you need to stop moping and get your mind off it this!" Lucy pleaded, tugging at my arm as I tried to hide under my blanket. It was Saturday and that had somehow become the night we all went to party at Katy's house. Her parents were loons, they even partied with us.

"Lucy stop, I can't. What if Harry is there? I called him like 3 times earlier and he ignored every call. I'm pathetic. Desperate. I'm a sham..." I said dramatically as I yanked my arm back. Lucy let out a grunt and I'm fairly certain she actually stomped her foot down. The blanket flew off my body and on to the floor, leaving tiny petite Lucy standing there glaring at me. "You are not, so quit. Fuck that, let's go together! We can even go somewhere else but you have to stop feeling so sorry for yourself."
I exhaled and sat up, shoving my frizzed out hair back from my face.
"Fine. Just please, don't let me do anything I'll regret..." I said wearily. I knew I didn't make the best decisions when I was upset or angry or any mood really because I'm like a walking catastrophe.
"Deal! Let's go shopping!" She squealed.
This was Lucy's ideal of a good time. Not really mine lately.

The mall was packed, the holidays were coming up so everyone was out gift shopping. This made me even more sad. It was going to be my first Christmas without my mom. I didn't know what to expect.

"What about this?" Lucy said as she bounced out in a tight little tube dress.
"You're going to freeze" I said with a roll of my eyes. She huffed and then walked back inside the fitting room.

"Summer?" I heard a posh accent call from behind me, I turned around and almost fell off of the puff I was sitting on.

"Christopher..." I said as I stood up. He had on a suit with a nice silk tie, his hair was combed neatly in place, and he had a bag full of children's toys in his hand.

"How are you doing? I've been so worried about you." His tone was much nicer than before. I blinked.

"Who are the toys for?" Really, that was my question.

He looked down at the bag and pursed his lips. "They're for my daughter, Clarissa. She's turning five the day after Christmas."

I breathed in. I had a little sister. I wondered what she looked like. I wondered if he was married.

"Oh, that's great. Um, do you live near here?" I asked, looking down at my combat boot clad feet.

"I live a little bit away, I work near here. My office is just across the street." He smiled.

"What do you do...?" I don't know where the sudden interest came from, but I was curious.

"I'm a chiropractor." He said with a gentle smile. I already knew he was successful, this wasn’t really a surprise.

"That's great." I smiled.

"Okay what about this one? Too slutty??" Lucy blurted as she swung the curtain back. She was wearing a bralette and a pair of tight skinny jeans. I stifled a laugh as she realized there was a grown man here. She quickly ran back into the fitting room and I looked back at him.
"Sorry, about that…."
"Summer, I'd love to get to know you. I really would, take this..." He dug in his pocket and pulled out a wallet, he then handed me a card with his name and his office and cell phone number.
"Call me anytime."
I took the card and nodded, I wouldn't-but I didn't want him to know that.
"Enjoy shopping and tell your friend she needs a jacket with that outfit." He said with a chuckle and then turned to leave.
I sat back down on the chair, letting out a long sigh.
Lucy's head promptly stuck out of the curtain.
"Who was that??"

"My dad..."

"Whoa. Your dads a hottie." She smirked and waggled her brows at me.

"Shut up, let's go."
