Fragile Hearts
Prologue
I still remember the day I first met her.
I was practically pulling my hair out, wondering how on Earth I’d be able to be in a boyband. Yes, I was still on the show and yes, that meant the world to me but now there was expectation. I wasn’t incredibly good looking, my baby face earning me comments of “such a cutie” rather than hormonal fuelled screams like the other lads. I felt like I didn’t belong, like I couldn’t do the task ahead of me and then I looked up to see the most stunning pair of warm brown eyes.
I scrambled to my feet, blatantly staring as she bit her lip and handed me a glass of water. I smiled as I took the glass from her, our hands briefly touching and igniting goose bumps on my palm, but she just turned her gaze to the floor. A hand appeared on her shoulder and she glanced up to look into Aiden’s eyes.
“It’s Niall right?” He asked as I nodded. My eyes kept darting between their faces and the hand that now rested on her hip. My heart had practically sunk and I wanted some answers. “I’m Aiden Grimshaw. I’m in the boy’s category. You’re in the new band right?” He shook my hand but quickly released it when he realised I wasn’t paying him much attention; my attention having been stolen by the girl in front of me. “You nervous?” His question came as a surprise to me and I felt the need to answer him.
“Something like that I suppose. I mean we’re all being shipped off to judge’s houses now. It’s become real, ya know?” His smile confirmed his acknowledgment of my statement although I wasn’t quite done yet. “How’d ya know?”
He squeezed the girl’s hip, pulling her into his chest slightly and eliciting a blush on her cheeks. “This one here.” He begun, looking down at her fondly. “She’s a sweetheart. Not great with words but always tries to help.” He gestured to the cup in my hand and my heart practically stopped.
She felt sorry for me. I was nothing but a hopeless case to her.
She must have noticed my face fall because her features shifted into a frown. “I thought water would help clear you head.” She became silent as we both stared at her. Aiden was grinning and I was in shock. Her voice was practically melodic and I wanted nothing more in that moment, than to hear it again and again. Her gaze fell back to the floor. “I’m sorry. It was stupid.”
It was then that I noticed her accent. I’d been too focused on her elegant looks and the pitch of her voice than the task of placing where she was from. She had a distinct British accent, pronouncing every word correctly. It was the sort of accent that would instantly come to mind when anyone thought of the UK. I found it heavenly.
“You done staring mate? That is my girlfriend you’re looking at.” They were both staring at me now. He looked kind of furious and she looked curious. It was in that moment that I realised she didn’t think too highly of herself. Did she not see how her eyes brightened up the room? How her freckles practically danced across her face with glee? Did she not see what everyone could see, that she was natural and symbolised everything good in the world?
“He’s not staring. You’re being paranoid again.” Her voice echoed around the corridor but he didn’t seem to hear her. His gaze was focused on her figure, not her face. I watched at his eyes skimmed over the slight curve of her hips, gazing at her legs in the shorts that she was wearing. It was like he was noticing her for the first time but as a piece of meat and not the girl of his dreams. He should have been admiring her face.
His eyes drifted upwards and over her chest, his pupils dilating slightly and then landing on her lips. I suppose that was slightly better. At least he was done checking her out now. When his lips crushed hers however, I desperately wished he could go back to the pervert thing. I was incredibly uncomfortable and apparently so was she. She shoved him away from her hard, her eyes glistening a little with unshed tears and I gulped. I wanted nothing more than to hug her and take her away from him.
“You know I don’t like that.”
“He had to know what’s mine.”
She shook her head and practically run away from him. He treated her like a possession and I wanted nothing more than to let her know just how special she was. Of course, he’d already decided that I was some sort of threat.
And therefore, I spent more time enquiring as to who she was, then I did practicing my harmonies which was probably why everyone came up with the idea to hide ourselves away at Harry’s. We got to know each other and sorted everything out. Everyone knows what happened with us. The attention we get is insane but I wouldn’t change it for the world. The only thing I would change, was letting her disappear or to be even more precise, letting her go with him.
She hated the limelight and Aiden had plenty of camera time himself. He had a lot of female attention and because he’s an absolute twat, he loved every moment of it, using it to his advantage. Not even a year after he found fame, he was in the newspaper with cheating allegations. He denied them and she stayed with him but then the real problems started.
His denial encouraged more girls to come forward and he couldn’t worm his way out of this one. They had pictures and messages to prove it all. You didn’t need to be Sherlock Holmes to figure out that he’d never been faithful to her.
I’ve never wanted to hurt anyone so badly before. I’m not a violent guy but he over stepped the mark completely. What sort of guy cheats on the best thing to ever happen to him? She’d been his girlfriend since he was 16 although I guess that just wasn’t good enough. She was pure and innocent. The sweetest girl you could ever meet in fact. She listened to everyone’s problems and always managed to fix them. Plus she was a vet. Could this girl get any more perfect?
But he broke her. She became a shell of a human being and I was determined to make her whole again.
