Just a Little Bit of Your Heart

Ch.7

Luke's POV

"What the hell is going on here?" Violet's voice shrieks.

Madison's eyes go wide and her face pales as she looks in her direction. I drop my gaze from her and turn to look, finding not only Violet standing there, but also the police. I look back to her and to the boy that now lays on the ground.

"Is anyone going to answer?" The police guy says.

What do I do? Do I cover my own ass, or tell the truth? Before I can answer, Madison says, "I was walking and back here, and this guy was coming after me. I couldn't handle it myself so Luke had to step in."

The police nods and one of them takes my arm, the other one taking Madison's arm, leading us outside. The boys are already out there, looking as freaked out as me. We all knew about our past history about the police.

We are both lined up against the wall and the cop tells us to stay where we are; separated from the group. I glance over at Madison as her face looks paler and paler. Seeing as I've been through this process more than once, I wasn't as scared. Madison on the other hand have never been through this before, and I'm sure she was scared as hell.

I reach my hand over and try to cover my hand in hers. Trying to reassure her, but she yanks her whole body away from me, and steps further away, creating distance.

"Which one of you is Luke Hemmings?" The officer asks.

Is that a trick question? "Uh me?" I step up from the wall.

"Luke Hemmings you have the right to remain silence, anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law." He says, and harshly locks my hands around my back.

"Whoa, whoa. What did he do?" I hear Calum speak up, raising his voice in a flippant manner.

"Watch it mate, I have a record on you too that I would gladly use against you." The cop retorts, while walking me to the police car.

"Watch your head." He says as he locks me in the car.

"No shit." I groan as the door slams.

I watch as the cop walks back to the rest of the group and I'm guessing 'explains my situation'. Madison stares in my direction the whole time, but I doubt she can actually see me through the tented window. She wipes her face as if she's wiping a tear away, and my heart shatters.

As per usual, I automatically feel angry with myself for feeling this kind of emotion, so I promise myself yet again that I'll stay away from her this time. The cop enters the car again, and speeds down the road, leaving my guys in the distance.

***

I get placed in a jail cell all by myself. The cold metal bed seeps through my tight jeans, making me shiver. I admire the floor for a moment, the dirty stains that were probably blood stains make patterns in the tile. As I look closer, the huge puddle that was once blood starts descending into small droplets that lead outside of the jai cell and down the hall.
I'd say from how much blood is still here, whoever got hurt probably bled out before they reached the infirmary. I hear footsteps from down the hallway followed by screaming. "I'll gut you!" A males voice calls out.

The officer I'm assuming chuckles at his foolishness, seeing as how this new inmate could do no harm to the protected officer. The screeches get louder as they get to my jail cell. "Meet your rommie." The officer smirks, releasing this heavy set gruby looking guy on me.
As soon as the officer leaves, the guy seems to calm down some. I glance at him once, but look away, clearly intimidated from his broad posture. I can feel his eyes burning through me, however. I glance over at him and sure enough, his eyes lock to mine.

"What're you in here for?" The man scoffs.

So what, he doesn't think I'm strong enough to be in here? "Fighting." I simply state, my cocky attitude in my head coming out cowardly.

"What were you fight, a small child?" He laughs, but I don't find it funny. I roll my eyes and look away. "How old are you?"

Once again with the questions. He intimidates me, so I feel obligated to answer. "18."
"And your already tatted?"

I scoff at his disbelief, it giving me back my confidence. "And?"

"And you want to raise your tone with me? I'll beat you down just as sure as I'm standing here." He threatens, taking my confidence down to 0 real quick.

I stare back at the blood stains on the floor, imaging that blood mine if I keep it up. "Why were you fighting?" The guy asks me yet again.

The blood runs to my face as the question is asked. I went to jail because of Madison. She the reason for all of this, she makes me do all of these stupid things, but I just cant seem to stay away from her. "Doesn't matter." I shrug, although it did matter.

"I'm sure it does, or you wouldn't be sitting here now would you?"

"Look man." I raise my voice, feeling my temper get the best of me. "I didn't ask you a thousand questions about why your here, so don't ask me question either. It's clearly none of your business as to why I'm here, so just leave me alone."

"Say that again." The guy stands up nearing my face.

I too stand up and face him. No more cowardly thoughts. No more pussy attitude. "Fuck. Off." I growl.

Without hesitation the guy strikes me in the jaw making me groan out in pain. I clench my fists and I'm ready to swing back, but the officer interrupts me. "I'm sure you really don't want to do that."

"I'm sure I really do." I smirk, and barely strike him back before the officer whips in there and takes me away from the situation.

"Nobody gets out of this world alive, kid." The guy shakes his head, sitting back on his bench.

I get placed in another confined cell, and this time I am fully left alone with my now throbbing jaw. Where did all that adrenaline come from all the sudden? I wonder.

***

I wake up the next morning with my jaw a nasty looking purple color. I half expected to wake up in my room full of the annoying guys I've gown to love. But I was alone in small different world.

"Hemmings, you've got a visitor." The same officer from last night tells me while unlocking my cell. "But first you've got to shower, you smell like death."

I sigh as I follow the officer down the hall, the shackles on my feel weighing me down. "After you done, you'll change into these." He says handing my an orange jumpsuit. "An in case you wondering, your trial is in two days." He nods and walks out of the door, but I knew he hadn't left because I could still see his shadow.

Two days? I have to spend a whole other two days in here? And for what? Was it really worth it? Of course not.

After my shower, I change into my jumpsuit and let the officer reattach my shackles and lead me down the hallway.

"You get one hour, don't screw it up." He tells me and leaves me find who I'll be talking to today.

I almost head straight back to my cell when I see her. She was the last person I wanted to talk to, let alone see. "What?" I ask her, picking up the phone so she could hear me.
"I-I'm sorry, Luke. I didn't mean for this to happen." Madison talks quietly into the phone.
"You had it under control, right?" I sarcastically question. Madison bites her lip and looks down at her hands, her lip quivering.

"How long will you be in here?" She wonders.

"To hell if I know. My trials in two days."

"Luke, I'm so sorry. I wish-"

"No you don't. It's over and done with, there's nothing you can do about it now." I interrupt her.

Madison puts her hand up to the glass. "What happened to your jaw?" I look down this time, thinking about that intimidating guy from last night. What did he mean by, 'Nobody gets out of this world alive, kid'? She sighs. "I'm sorry."

"Will you stop saying that? It is what it is, God." I roll my eyes.

"None of this would've happened if I didn't go with you guys last night. It's all my fault." A single tear rolls down her face.

I wanted to feel sympathy for her, but I couldn't let myself do it. "It is your fault, I'm glad you see that, Madison. If you would've taken care of yourself and wouldn't have been such a bitch about it, you could've avoided all of this. I wouldn't be here right now, if it wasn't for you."

"Why did you help me then?!" Madison shouts. "I never asked you to help me, to save the day. You have your ways and I have mine, I had it under control, just like the last time and just like this time. Why do you even care?"

"Fuck you, Madison!" I yell, grabbing the guards attention. "You know my life was fucked up before you came along. I didn't need you to make it 10 times worse." I lower my voice as the officers drag me away from her face.

"Smooth move, Hemmings." The officer shakes his head at me leaving me alone again.
