I've Got This Friend

Jack hasn't talked to me all week, and I didn't blame him. To be honest, I missed his random personality. He was a good friend, but I wasn't looking for a relationship with him and I hoped he understood that.

I was currently laying on the couch watching pointless T.V. with Travis, when my phone rings beside me. I groan and almost didn't answer, seeing that it was Ashton. "Yes?" I answer anyways, walking out of the room.

"Are we hanging out this weekend? We always go see movies together on Fridays. We've missed out on that for the past two weeks." Ash speaks. I can hear the hesitation in his voice.

"No Ash. You cant be a complete dick to me, then just expect me to drop everything to hang out with you."

"Jessica look I'm sorry. I know that I've been a prude, but I'm sorry. I'll make it up to you. Remember where we used to go when we would feel sad?"

"Yes." I nod.

"Meet me there. Please." He say and hangs up without giving me time to respond.

We haven't been to the place he's talking of in a very long time. I don't even think it's still there to be honest. I sigh and grab my shoes, to meet this moody, rude boy, that taking over the sweet, fedora boy that's always been my best friend.


As I'm walking through the woods, I don't find any sign of the wooden tree house that used to be here, also no sign of Ashton. "It's not here anymore." I hear his voice, but don't see him.

I stop in my tracks and look over my shoulder and to my sides, but no Ash. "Up here." He sighs, and jumps down from his place, to be met in front of me. "You came."

"You may be a dick, but your still my best friend."

"Jessie, I'm really so for the way I acted. It was stupid of me to ruin your happiness all because of jealousy."

"You just realized this?" I scoff, crossing my arms.

"I know. I messed up and I'm sorry. If Jack is who you really want to be with, I'm okay with that."

I sigh, thinking about my situation with Jack now. He probably wants nothing else to do with me, let alone see me again. "I called it off with him."

"Really?" Ashton says in a cheerful tone, but then rephrases it in a more saddened tone. "Really?"

"Wow, Ash. That's a new low, even for you." I shake my head.

"No, I'm sorry about you and Jack. It's a shame."

"No your not. You never were sorry. You only want to apologize to me so you can have me back. I don't think you understand that I felt like I had no choice but to never talk to Jack again, or any one for that matter. It hurts to know that I will never get to be happy because you'll always be there standing in the way." I spat.

Ashton wastes no time to respond to that. "That bullshit, Jessica! I tried to be happy for you, I really did. But that's hard to do, when your all that I know."

"Then let go of-"

"Why? Why Jessie? Do you really want that?" He interrupts me. At this point I feel like we're talking about two different things, but I keep going anyways.

"I don't know what I want, Ashton. But your my friend and your supposed to be helping me, not dragging me back."

"Why are you looking down all the wrong roads?" He asks quietly, his tone becoming softer. "Have you ever thought that the person you've been looking for has been here the whole time?"

"What are you talk-"

"Forget it. Forget about the movie, forget about this weekend. Hang out with whoever you want, date whoever, but make sure to leave me out of it." Ashton's eyes are no longer the hazel bright color they hold. They've turned cold and dark. I see water at the rim of his eyes before he walks off. "If you really think I'm standing in your way, don't even call me your friend anymore. We're done Jessica."

He calmly walks away and my world caves in. Ashton has been my best friend for as long as can remember. Truth is he's all I know too.
