Hold On

Chapter Two

We all sit, minding our own business in our seats. The limo has been parked in front of the school for about five minutes now. God knows whats taking so long. We had already dropped off Jackson and Avery at their school, so it was just Ryan, Kienna, Jaime and I waiting patiently to get out, eager to start the day.

Neither Mom or Dad spoke a word to us as they sat near the door on their phones, texting who knows who. Thats a part of their jobs, always staying connected. Dad starts his Promotion today at the new record label, although i cant tell if he's nervous or excited. He's been really focused on his phone all morning, but we're all used to it by now. When your Dads a record producer you get used to the silence and the ignorance, after a while it seems normal. As for my mother, how do i even begin to explain why she's always on her phone? She's a therapist, and i know you're probably thinking that therapists shouldn't be on their phones, they should be communicating with others, but my mom is different from any other therapist. Not only does she sit in a chair all day and talk to people about their feelings, she writes books about it. (Best-sellers i might add.) The reason she's always on her phone is to "keep in touch" with her so called fans. Whatever. I dont ask too many questions. All i know is, my mom has always been social and willing to communicate with anyone and everyone. Maybe thats why Kienna turned out the way she did. The only difference between my mother and Kienna is that Kienna is rude and my mom is not. Simple as that.

Speaking of Kienna, we haven't talked to each other since yesterday afternoon when she made that bluntly rude statement about not wanting to be considered my sister at school. Thats fine by me. By all means she can just not be considered my sister what so ever. She means nothing to me now. The funny thing is that she's actually acting like she's the one who's mad. About what i have no idea, but thats just who she is. She makes stuff up and uses it to her advantage.

"Alrighty!" Mom cheered as she placed her phone down on her lap and clapped her hands together. "Looks like its time to go!" She enthused although none of us looked excited. Why should we be? We're new here and its obvious that the only one in this car who might actually like it here is Kienna, considering how she's all eager to socialize and become a contender for her stupid list. Dad continued to type on his phone as did Kienna while the rest of us stayed put. Mom didnt look pleased at our lack of enthusiasm. "Its completely normal for you to feel this way." She began after sighing and placing a hand on Jaimes arm. Here we go. This is where the therapist comes out. "But everything deserves a chance. Highschool will be the best years of your life. Go make the best of it." She told us, even though no one was really listening. I'm pretty sure Ryan actually fell asleep.

Suddenly the door opened and everyone sprung into action. Kienna was the first to step into the open, and took off as soon as she got the chance. She doesn't want to be seen with us. "Bye Mom." Jaime said as she kissed her on the cheek and pulled herself out. Dad looked up from his phone when he realized what was happening. "Have fun! Ryan please stay out of trouble. At least for your first day." He said and Ryan rolled his eyes. "Yeah Dad. Whatever." He replied as he hopped out of the limo, i followed close behind him, after receiving hugs from both parents. "Bye!" They called before Arnold, the driver, closed the door.

I looked around the front of the building. It was quite intimidating. Jocks threw footballs across the grassy areas, groups of students sat together in bunches scattered all around, and many others were being unloaded by cars and quickly finding the company of their friends. "Damn. Looks like they dropped us of in a prison yard." Ryan said, his negative attitude slightly making this worse. I shot him a look. "Dont be like that Ry. You heard mom, let's make the most of this." I told him, even though it sounded like the exact same lies i had heard escape my mothers mouth moments ago. I didnt believe a word.

As i looked around, paying closer attention, i noticed people staring at us. Probably wondering who we are and why we had just stepped out of a limo. Sometimes i wish i had my own car. That limo always draws too much unnecessary attention. "Should we go to the office?" Jaime asked and i nodded, still studying my surroundings. The looks we were receiving were disgusting, but i tried to ignore it. Guys looked at me like i was their next meal and girls looked at Ryan like he was some sort of Prince Charming. They whispered and giggled as he walked by, but he didn't seem to notice. I shot a disgusted glare at a group of guys who had just whistled at me and Ryan did the same which made them back off. Thats the perks of having a brother that looks like he eats nothing but protein shakes and works out at the gym 24/7. The whole world seemed to stop as we walked by, but i didnt care.

I adjusted the strap of my bag on my shoulder as we walked through the main entrance. It smelled like any other school; A mix of cleaning supplies, negative vibes and cafeteria food. Something that i was quite familiar with. Somehow along the way, Ryan managed to take the lead and was now heading in the direction of the office. Thats where we would pick up our supplies.

On the way their we passed Kienna, who was already socializing with a group of four others. Three girls and a guy. They were all laughing and she pretended not to see me although we did make eye contact for a brief second. The people she was talking to looked to be the type that would share the same personality as her. Bosy, mean spirited, prissy and incredibly talented in the art of talking about themselves. Oh well. Thats none of my business. I convinced myself not to think about her as we finally found our way to the office.

There were about three kids sitting in chairs against a wall as a woman typed on her computer at her desk. If i had to guess i would say she's the school secretary and probably our best bet. I pushed past Ryan and walked up to her desk, a friendly smile on my face. It didn't take long for her to notice me and when she did she stood up from her chair and smiled at us. "Hello! You must be the Elingston clan!" She said happily and i nodded. "Thats us." I replied and she flashed a warm smile before gathering papers together from her desk and walking around it to meet us. Her crazy red curls bounced as she walked and as she did so, she positioned her glasses that were on the top of her head into their proper place so that she could see more clearly.

Once she got around the desk, she extended a hand out to each of us which we all gladly shook it as she held rather large envelopes in her other hand. "Welcome to Sir. Mgginly. My name is Mrs. Kildrom. I just have to hand these things out to you and then you're free to start your day." She told us cheerily. She seems like the kind of person you'd love to have at a family gathering. She reminds me of my Aunt Silvia who always seems so cheerful and always has presents for us kids.

I watched as she held out the envelopes infront of her and glanced at the writing on the first one. "Which one of you is Jamie?" She asked and my sister raised her hand shyly before she was given her envelope. "Ryan?" She called next and at the sound of his name Ryan blinked, holding out a hand to recieve his package. Then the lady looked at me. "Are You Kienna?" She asked me. I was about to say no, but another voice interrupted me. "No i am." She said. It was Kienna. Wha-? When did she get here?! I swear she's like a ninja sometimes. Mrs. Kildrom smiled at her, but her expression didnt change as she took the envelope out of the secretary's hands. "Thanks." She said before turning around and leaving the office.

Mrs. Kildrom looked slightly confused and disgusted by Kiennas rude behaviour. "Sorry about her." I spoke, embarrased by my sisters rude scene and she blinked. I would probably have the same reaction if i was her. Kienna is nothing but a snobby bitch. Its harsh but its the truth. "No no, thats fine. Is she always like that?" She asked and all three of us nodded. "Unfortunately yes." Jaime spoke. I'm not the only one who's fed up with having her as a sister.

The secretary was fast to shake her head and blink herself away from what had just happened. It wasn't long before she was smiling again. "So you must be Jessica?" She asked me and i nodded with a smile as she handed me the final envelope. "Well i hope the three of you have a great first day. In the envelopes are your locker numbers as well as your schedule." She told us and we all understood. "Great thanks." Ryan said genuinely and we all waved goodbye before stepping out into the hallway.

Almost in sync, we opened our envelopes. Ryan and Jaime seemed to have a pretty good idea of where they were going, which is good for them considering i have the slightest clue where i have to go. Both of them took off, eager to get to where they had to go, leaving me standing helpless in the middle of the hallway as people rushed past. I look down at my schedule once again. History. I smile at that. I've always been fond of history, in all honesty i just live school in general. I've always been so focused and everything seems to come easy for me. School is the only thing other than music where i can truly shine. All of my other siblings seemed to have taken the lead on everything else. Kienna has always been the better dresser and the social one. Ryan's Mr. Tough guy and is incredibly good at boxing although other sports aren't really in his criteria. Jaime is an extremely talented writter, just like my mom. Jackson is probably the best liar you will ever meet and is extremely talented at debates, Avery is by far the most stunning eleven year old the world has ever seen and Sebastian is Sebastian... He's just good at everything and it isn't fair. So i have to try my best to keep my academics up. I want to be the best at something and since everything else but school has already been taken, i like my odds.

History in room B12 was actually a lot less harder to find then i thought. Once i realized that all of the classrooms on the first floor were labeled with the letter A in front of them, i figured that meant that the second floor would be labeled floor B and that all the class rooms on that floor would be labeled with the letter B in front. I was right.

The bell had rung about ten minutes ago, so by the time i had finally found the correctly labeled room, a lesson had already begun. I knocked on the door loud enough for the teacher to hear. He stops talking and turns his attention towards me, along with the other 25 people that filled the room. They all stare at me, waiting for me to say something. "Um," i begin, but my voice sounds scratchy so i clear my throat. "I'm Jessica." I say, but nobody seems to move an inch. The students whisper amongst themselves loud enough so that i am able to hear.

"Thats the new girl"
"Is she american? Her accent sounds american"
"She's so pretty wow"
"Dude she's so hot"
"Her brother is mighty fine"
"I'd fuck her"

I shot a quick glare towards the asshole who said the last one before turning my attention back towards the teacher who looked really confused. "Jessica Elingston." I stated my name once again. "My schedule says history in room B12, am i in the right place?" I asked and he sniffed before moving towards his desk. He glanced at a piece of paper on his desk and looked back up at me. "I believe so. Step inside Mrs. Elingston." He told me and i followed his orders. "You can take a seat next to Maddison." He said, pointing towards a girl in the second row.

She smiled at me as i approached the desk, sliding into the open seat next to her. She was stunning. She had blonde hair just like mine and dark eyes, something about that was so fascinating. I've never seen a blonde with such dark eyes. "Hey." I said with a smile as i slipped a binder out if my bag. She returned the smile, showing her dimples. "Hi, Jessica right?" She asked, trying to remember my name which i stated moments ago. I nodded. "I'm Maddison, but you can call me Maddy." She said and i smiled. Did i just partially make a friend?

I wasn't planning on saying anything else after that as the teacher continued the lesson. I dont even know what his name is. He never mentioned it. Somewhere around halfway through the lesson, Maddy leaned over and whispered to me. "So where are you from?" She asked and i looked over at her briefly before looking back at the board, worried we might get caught talking. "Chicago, Illinois. Its in the U.S." I told her quietly and her eyes widened with excitement. It was almost as if she had never met anyone from America. "Thats so cool, why'd you move here?" She asked and i looked over at her again. Why is she so interested anyways? We're going to get in trouble. "My Dad got a job promotion. He's signing some new boy band in the area." I told her and her mouth dropped open. "Oh my god!" She whispered excitedly. "Your Dad is a record producer?" She asked and i nodded, pretending not to be talking to her as the teacher seems to notice our whispers. Maddison quiets down too as the teacher turns around to look at us. When he doesn't see us talking he turns back around.

The rest of that class was spent explaining to Maddison what my Dad does and I'll be honest, it wasn't the best conversation I've had with someone, but yet again i hardly ever have conversations with other people. Maybe I'm just not used to it. At least i can say i made a friend today, well if you'd even consider her to be my friend. We only have one period together and we hardly know anything about each other.

The other two periods before lunch, (Maths and English) were a blur. Finding both of the rooms was surprisingly easy, but convincing the teachers that i actually was in their classes was a struggle. Overall, this day hasn't been too bad, other than the fact that around eleven guys have tried to make a move on me today. I knew this would happen. Back in Chicago whenever a new girl arrived, all of the guys would try to take advantage of her. It must be a guy thing. Other than that everyone else in my classes have been nice, except for one girl in my Elnglish, Olivia i think it was, who claimed to know my sister. (That explains why she wasn't the nicest.)

Now its time for lunch and as unusual as this is, everyone in the school gets the same lunch. This school is huge, so its not like there isn't room for everyone to eat at the same time, its just scary. Walking around the cafeteria seems like it does in movies. Where everyone has their assigned seats with their groups of friends and there's always that one person who has no idea where to go. (Aka: me) I just hope I'm not going to be that girl who eats lunch in the washroom.

The line up for food, since everyone is eating at the same time, is very long and all around me i can here the whispers of people, probably talking about me. I wish this stupid line would move faster. I can feel the group of guys behind me planning something. The way their whispers seemed to be purposely directed my way. I can practically feel their breath on my neck, but i try to ignore it. "Just focus on the line ahead of you." I tell myself, and somehow i manage to do so. (For a short while at least.)

My focus is interrupted by the whispered giggles from the people infront of me. Their attention shifting from me to something behind me. I narrow my eyes as i feel someone's presence behind me. "You've got quite a nice ass newbie." I heard a deep male voice say from behind me. The tone he used was dark and full of lust, i could tell he was trying to be intimidating, but it wasn't working. Instead of causing a scene, i kept my line of vision forward, ignoring him completely although everyone else seemed to have their full attention drawn to whoever was standing behind me.

Suddenly i felt a hand brush a piece of my hair away from my neck and a mouth nearing my ear. "Mind if i feel how nice it really is?" He asked and i could feel his other hand brush against the rim of my jeans. "I bet it feels gr-" before he even had time to finish what he had to say, i twisted my body around, grabed the hand that was finding itself rather close to my behind and twisted it in a direction that probably didnt feel so great for him. "Ahhh." He winced as i held his arm in a locked position. All eyes around us had widened as the room grew more silent each second.

I looked down at the boy who's arm i held in a locked position. He was semi-hunched over and holding his arm with his free hand. He looked like he would be able to remove himself from my grip, yet he didn't move. He had brown hair, which was settled at the top of his head in a mop of curls. I will admit, he wasn't unattractive. He had huge green eyes that were staring into my blue ones as his mouth held a playful smirk. "Sorry what were you saying?" I asked him, my voice strong and deceptive. His smirk remained plastered onto his face as he glanced at his arm, then looked at me once again. "As incredibly attractive as that was," he began, earning a glare from me, "would you be so kind as to release my arm?" He asked and i glared at him even harder and gripped even tighter making him wince again in pain. Once it was clear that he had gotten the hint, i let go of his arm and he stood up, rubbing the place in which i once had in a strong hold. A part of me expected him to walk away after that, but another part of me knew he wouldn't.

I turned back around to face the front of the line. Everyone's eyes were wide and staring at me although they were fast to go back, minding their own business. Thats when i felt a familiar presence to my left. I looked at him. He was pretty tall so i had to tilt my head up slightly to glare. I wasn't surprised to recieve the same smirk in return. "I'm Harry." He told me, but i didnt reply. It would be a waste of my time anyways. Instead of introducing myself, i turned my attention back to the line up and didnt speak a word, which for some reason i do not understand, made him laugh. "No need to be so cold sweetheart." He said, but still i pretended to ignore him and the fact that he just called me sweetheart.

When the line moved forward i was quick to step up, almost reaching the front. But still, Harry managed to stay beside me. Staring. "Why dont you give me your number and you can teach me how to do that arm trick sometime?" He asked and i looked at him. Finally fed up with him and his childish behaviour. "What makes you think I'd give you my number?" I asked him and he looked around, a familiar smirk creeping up on his face again. "Well," he began as he sighed, "you're new, a loner, and frankly you dont have anyone else to hang out with. So you know, i guess i thought you'd spring at the oportunity." He explained and i scoffed, kind of hurt by what he just said. A loner? Me? I guess I've always known that, but hearing someone else say it doesn't really feel good. "Oh fuck off." I told him, having enough of his attitude. He threw up his hands in surrender. "Fine, but this isn't over. I'll see you around babe." He winked and with that he walked away. I nearly puked in my mouth. How can someone manage to be that big of an asshole?

After he had disappeared from sight, i looked around at everyone staring at me, trying my best to ignore them. Its funny how people think they can have such a big effect on someone just by giving a certain look. They way to avoid this is simple. Be invisible. They cant give you looks or judge you if they cant see you. Unfortunately for me, with the scene I've just caused, being invisible is going to be nearly impossible.

It doesn't take long for the line to shrink further and further until i find my self at the very front, ordering my food. Everything looked disgusting, so i ended up getting a salad. Next thing i know, I'm roaming around the cafeteria, hopelessly looking for a place to sit. As i walk by all of the different tables; Jocks, Cheerleaders, Nerds and stoners, i realize that maybe i will be eating my lunch in the washroom after all. That is of course until i hear a familiar voice speak up beside me. "Hey Jess!" The female voice greets and i am relieved to see that it was Maddison. I smiled. "Hey Maddy." I reply as we walk together down the center of the lunchroom. Hopefully I'll be able to follow her to wherever she's going and eat with her.

"Wanna eat?" She asked me and i nodded, thankful that i now had someone to eat with. "Sure." I say cheerfully and we both head over to an empty table. I slid my Tray onto the table and took off my bag before sitting down across from her. She smiled as she did the same. "Okay so now that I've captured you, tell me everything." She said with a smirk. I was confused at first until i realized that she was most likely talking about the little incident with Harry moments ago. Do we have to talk about this? Its not like it matters anyways. Guys will be guys and i knew it was bound to happen anyways. Maybe if i pretend i dont know what she's talking about she will just drop the topic.

"Tell you everything about what?" I asked, playing dumb. I could tell she wasn't buying it. "Oh come on I'm not stupid! Everyone saw! Now tell me how on earth you had the balls to turn down Harry Styles and embarass him infront of the whole school!" She pressured and i huffed a small laugh at her enthusiasm. "I dunno, I'm just not really okay with random guys trying to take advantage of me like that." I told her and she nodded slightly. "Yeah i guess thats a good point but its Harry Styles!" She whispered excitedly so that the people at the next table couldn't hear her. I raised my eyebrow a little, confused as to why this boy mattered so much to her. "So what? He's just a person." I told her as i unwrapped my plastic utensils. I watched as her jaw dropped and her eyes nearly popped out of her head. It took her a few seconds of staring at me in disbelief before she spoke again. "You did not just say that." She said. "Please tell me you know who he is." She demanded but i honestly had no clue. "Um... No sorry i dont. I thought he was just another guy?" I told her and she gasped. "Are you kidding?!" She asked in disbelief but i only laughed as i shook my head. I find her seriousness at this point hilarious.

Her eyes wandered away from me and settled on something else momentarily before she jumped and quickly turned back to look at me. "Oh my god he's looking at you." She whispered and i laughed some more. "Can you please just tell me what all of the fuss is about? Why is he so important?" I asked and she sighed, trying to keep herself calm. "Okay well not only is he the captain of the football team and the most popular guy in this school, but he can sing and dance and holy hell is he ever hot." She explained, looking as if she were in love. "Cool." I told her. A persons social status means nothing to me. I dont care if their popular, if they come across as an asshole then they will forever be an asshole to me, and Harry, well he's the definition of an asshole.

She sighed and slumped back in her chair, clearly frustrated. "Cool? Thats all you have to say? He has everyone in this school wrapped around his finger and he's sooo fucking hot. Are you sure you're human? You have to at least admit that he's attractive." She said and i looked behind me, noticing a group of guys staring at me, Harry being one of those guys. I glared at him before turning back around to Maddy. "No he's not, sorry." I lied. I obviously find him attractive. Anyone would be lying if they said he isn't, but if word got out that i thought he was attractive god knows what he'd try and do. Maddy smirked at me and raised her eyebrow. "Wow you're a really bad liar." She told me and i smiled a bit. "Shhhhh." I told her and she laughed.

"Hey Mads!" Someone called out from nearby, causing us both to look in that direction. A girl with dark red hair and some guy were walking up to us with lunch trays in their hands and looked pretty confused when they saw me although they gave a friendly smile none the less. "Hey guys, this is Jess." She introduced me as they sat down. The girl smiled wider as she sat down. "So this is who everyone has been raving about?" She asked and i gave a confused look as she chuckled. "I'm Erica." She told me and i smiled back at her as the guy reached his hand over to me. "I'm Carter." He said with a smirk as i shook his hand politely. I blushed a little as he gave me a small friendly wink. He is the first guy all day that has actually been polite and not to mention he's really attractive as well. Carter i would guess is somewhere around 6 feet 4 inches, so he's pretty tall. He also has really nice black hair thats styled up in the front and makes his blue eyes pop. I've never seen someone with such blue eyes before, they're almost a whitish blue.

I snapped myself back into reality and looked at Erica who was asking me something about how i was liking the school. "Its alright i guess. People have been friendly so far. Maybe a little too friendly at times." I replied. Maddy immediately leaned in. "Did you see what happened earlier? This chick is such a bad ass." She said and i rolled my eyes as i laughed. Erica and Carter looked interested as it seemed like they didnt know. "What did you do America?" Carter asked and i smiled at my new nickname. "Some dick tried to grab my ass." I told him and Maddy cut in. "Not just any dick, it was Harry Styles!" She whispered excitedly and Erica slammed her palm down on the table as her mouth dropped open, attracting the attention of some people around us. I took a bite of my salad before i was being shaken to death by my new friend. "Erica Chill." Carter laughed and she released her grip on my shoulder. "Dude you have to tell me everything!" She enthused and i sighed. This is going to be an awfully long lunch.
