Broken Souls

◾Introduction

Mrs. Johnson was taking longer than usual to start class. Harry, one of my best friends, tapped me on my arm as he leaned across the aisle. ‘’What?’’ I ask, annoyed a little already. Mondays sucked, and here on campus was the worst location to spend a dreaded Monday morning.

Everyone, including me, shoved others around and mumbled harsh and mean nothings to others. And besides, most of us were hung over from the week end, especially me. ‘’Do you think I should take Isabella on a date Friday?’’ Harry asks.

‘’I don’t know.. nor do I care.’’ I sigh out as I roll my eyes. ‘’Monday blues, eh, Horan?’’ I heard Liam say as he sat down in front of Harry, looking over his shoulder at me. ‘’Yeah.. Monday’s suck dick.’’ I chuckle a little with them. We were caught off guard when that voice we’ve become accustomed to yelled through the room once again, waking everyone up for sure.

‘’Horan! Styles! Payne! How many darn times do I have to tell you three to stop talking!’’ Mrs. Johnson says, more like yells. We just laugh lightly to ourselves before she starts the class off with a Monday quiz.

I was in my first year of College, the middle of first term. It sucked being here, but my mom wants me to do this for myself so I can have a good future. I lived in a small town in Alabama, don’t ask how I got here, I’d rather not mention it anytime soon.

I moved here from Ireland when I was about six. Just me and my mom, my brother stayed with my dickhead father, whom never cared for me or my mom anyways. But college was going good so far, the classes were easy. I was just getting my basic degree in education, just so I can be a football, American Football not soccer, coach once I’m finished.

You have to get a teacher’s degree to do so, because at our local highschool the coaches for most sports teach a class too. Harry and Liam happened to be planning the same future, but Liam wanted to be a principal so he’d stay more years than me and Harry.

And Harry wanted to be a gym coach, since working out was his hobby. I work out too, but not as much as I did when I was in highschool. Liam, Harry, and I lived in the same small neighborhood downtown and we went to school together since I’ve been here.

Harry, however, moved here a year after me. Liam had been her three years previous of my relocation to Orange Beach, the best coastal town around. The beach was amazing, but we all go University Of Mobile, just about thirty or so miles from our home.

I got snapped from my thoughts by Mrs. Johnson’s voice. ‘’Styles, read the first paragraph aloud.’’ She says. He sighs before starting. I didn’t remember opening the Mathematics book, but whatever.

‘’The Square Root of a number is a number times itself to equal that number. The Square Root of a number is called a Perfect Square at times. The Square Root doesn’t not have to be a whole number, but each numeral can be the solution to a square root of a number.’’ Harry stops.

‘’Payne, pick up.’’ She demands. She only does this when we get in trouble. ‘’For instance, 1 times 1 is 1. 2 times 2 is 4. The square root of 9 is 3, and so on-‘’ Liam was interrupted by the door being opened.

The headmaster comes into the room. Mrs. Johnson puts on that fake smile all of the teachers have when Sir Payne comes into the classroom. Sir Payne is Liam’s father. He goes by Sir, Mr. Or headmaster. But either way, he was fully respected but us all, especially his son.

“Mr. Payne.. how can I help you, sir?’’ She asks flirting as he walks up to the front of the room. ‘’I just have an announcement.’’ He sighs and she nods. He turns to us and sighs lightly, he always sighs for some reason I have yet to figure out. I’ve known this man for twelve years and that’s the only thing I don’t know about him, the reason he sighs all time.

Mr. Payne looks around at us before finally opening his mouth to speak. ‘’I just wanted to let you all know that we are getting a new student, A transfer from Florida State.’’ He tells us. ‘’Why would they transfer here?’’ Some one comments and a few people snicker.

‘’You’ll find out..’’ He says before nodding, a signal that he was finish with what he had to say. And before long, not as long as I thought, he was gone. ‘’Mrs. Johnson, do you want me to pick up?’’ Liam asks.

‘’Um.. no.’’ She says, her cheeks red and her eyes staring off in space. ‘’Read silently everyone.’’ She adds before sitting at her desk, flustered by Mr. Payne as always. Just like every other female, and a handful of male, staff members here.

‘’Your dad’s a player, eh?’’ I hear Harry mumble to Liam, getting a chuckle from him. I roll my eyes as I stare down at the page in the book. I was always good at school, when I focused on it at least. So this was nothing, just a review of the simple things.

‘’I heard about your little friend.’’ Liam mumbles back to him. ‘’Fuck..’’ Harry sighs gently. ‘’You hit a Kiss and Tell? Shame on you, Harry.’’ I whisper. He glances over after throwing me the finger. I laugh a little as I start to read that stupid page full of useless information.
