My Heart Is Open

Alice and I agreed to meet up on the beach for a late evening walk like we always do. She should be here any moment. Me, well, I had gotten here a few minutes early. She doesn’t get to places early or late. She’s always on time.

Before I could even process it, I saw her silver Altima pull up in the parking lot of her parent’s rental condos. The Goodwin’s owned quite a few of the condos here, they made good money. Alice actually has her own in one of the ones they own, I can’t remember the name but I could give you the address.

“Is that my favorite Irish boy!’’ She calls out as she opens her door and steps out of the car. “You know it!’’ I yell back with a smile as she shuts the door and runs towards me. I was still on the side walk, I hadn’t made it to the sand yet, which wasn’t far.

She reaches me and throws her arms around my neck, engulfing me into a hug. ‘’You act like you haven’t seen me in ages!’’ I laugh as she squeezes me tight. She leans up so that her lips were close to my ear.

‘’I told dude about your dad’s place.. he said he’d check it out tomorrow.’’ She whispers in my ear. ‘’So.. that’s what you’re happy about?’’ I ask as she kisses my cheek lightly. ‘’Yes! I only wants what best for you, Ni! And I want you to be happy, boo!’’ She squeals as she pinches my cheek lightly, that was something she’s always done.

‘’I know. I know.. geez.’’ I smirk as we start to walk towards the sand. Like we always do, I slide my arm around her shoulders, holding her close to me. In return, she snakes her arm around my lower back, sliding her finger tips under the hem of my tank top to give my side a little tickle.

We were just like this. We didn’t have a relationship. We did have love. We had love, but friend love. That was all. And it’s the best friendship I have. She’s amazing. I love her, she’s like the sister I didn’t have.

‘’You look pretty.’’ I mumble as she leans her head on my shoulder. She was only an inch and half shorter than me. ‘’Thanks.. I just threw it on.’’ She sighs as we start the walk in the sand towards the shore. It was a good ways.

Alice had her dark brown, purple tinted hair pulled back some. The purple has always looked good on her. I like it. She was wearing a light blue crop top that ruffled at the edges and had a high neckline.

And like usual, she was wearing high waist shorts. Today she wore navy blue ones, it looked good on. They were almost black actually. And sandals that completed her attire. She had a few bracelets on her arm, a necklace around her neck, and a ring on her right index finger.

She looked like she always did. Laid back, fun, and gentle. And that’s all I asked for in a friend. And she gave it to me.

Before we knew it, we had made our way to the beach. The sun was setting and the sky looked like a rainbow. It was pretty. We always loved coming at night. The moon on the water was just pure amazing.

People often thought that me and Alice were dating. Some have asked us before. We always replied with a “no, we’re just friends.” And a smile a usually a laugh at people’s stupid thoughts these days.

Can’t a guy be friends with a girl with out being labeled as her boyfriend?
