Time of Our Lives

Happy Birthday Mommy and Daddy Direction!

*Kariann’s POV*

It was the first day of school. What was to be expected? What I wanted was to see my friends again, many whom I haven’t even seen over the summer. “Kariann!” I heard one of my ‘sisters’ say to me. I called her sis, though her name was Destiny.

I smiled at my best friend, seeing her walking hand in hand with her boyfriend, Damien. We exchanged hugs. “You know, I was wondering why you never called me during the end of the summer, but after hearing everybody talk, I can see now.”

I gave her a confused look. She leaned in. “Everyone’s talking about you and Dakota. A lot are saying you got to stay with One Direction.”

“Oh…” I said, pulling out a binder. “Well…”

“It’s okay, I’m not mad that you didn’t tell me.” Destiny said. She brought her voice down. “Actually, I think Dakota is getting the worse end of the rumors…”

I looked over, seeing Dakota putting stuff in her locker as her best friend, Bonnie was shoving stuff into her locker next to her. I could see the smiles apparent on both of their faces as they talked. I gave her a side-look, “How so?”

“Well…” Damien spoke up. “I heard some freshman calling her a slut.”

“A whore, too.” Destiny added.

I gaped. I shook my head, feeling my tongue slide across my teeth as I slammed the locker shut. “I swear, if I’m around to hear one person say that to her, I’m going to knock their teeth in.”

“Whoa, there sister.” Destiny said, putting a hand on my shoulder. “The rumors will die down soon.”

“I don’t know…” Damien started, which received an elbow to the stomach.

Destiny gave him a look, telling him to shut up. I looked over at Dakota. I hope she wouldn’t learn of the rumors. The past few days she’s been talking between Eleanor and Louis quite often, and each day she has been getting better. I knew she avoided social sites, knowing full well what was to be expected on there.

“I just want to wait until I’m strong enough to read them. I’m still pretty shocked over the magazine, but I know there will be a day where I can just look back and laugh. Just for now, I need my friends. So I’ll just settle with them until then.” I remembered her saying to me while we were on our plane ride home.

As long as she was smiling now, I’ll contain myself. But still, I’ll beat the shit out of any girl that calls my best friend a whore, especially when she’s not even the type to think that way with anyone.

-Three Weeks Later-

Three weeks easily passed by and I was already 18. Strange, I was considered an adult now yet I didn’t feel like one. It was Saturday and a very hot one at that. Dakota and I sat in the living room, just about having every fan in the house on. “Seriously, why can’t your mom turn down the AC?” Dakota cried, fanning herself with a folder.

God, I wish. It sucked having older parents with cold blood.

I heard the door knocked and I looked over at Dakota. “Ugh, fine…” She said, getting up and going over *to the door.

I looked over the couch to see who would be present. She opened the door. Standing right in front of here was Liam Payne with a birthday hat on that said ‘Birthday Boy’ and a cake that read ‘Happy Birthday Mommy and Daddy Direction!’ A huge smile came across our faces. The others popped up right behind Liam, “Surprise!”

“Oh, my God. I would so totally hug you right now Liam but you’re holding a cake!” Dakota screeched excitedly, moving out of the way to let the boys in.

For the first five minutes of their visit was nothing but consisting hugs and kisses on the cheek. “I missed you girls like cray cray.” Niall said, putting down his guitar he carried in that was still in its case.

“Cray cray?” I asked. “Seriously, Niall?”

“Alright!” Louis shouted, holding up one of those string bottle launchers. “Let’s get this party started!”

“Kariann Taylor!” I heard a demanding voice.

We all froze in place. Shit, my dad. His head popped out from the hallway. “Oh, it’s you boys. I should’ve known. Kariann, what’s going on?”

Liam came out holding a cake. “Birthday party?” Smiling some.

I watched as Da squinted his eyes to read the cake. “Mommy and Daddy Direction… Is there something you’re not telling me?”

That got us laughing, except for Liam. He just stood there smiling awkwardly. “Shit, boy, I was only kidding. Whose birthday is it?”

“Mine and Kariann’s.” Liam answered. “Well, her birthday already happened, and mine’s not till next week, so we just settled for a birthday party this weekend… if that’s okay with you…”

Da looked around, seeing the fun string cans and bottle in everyone’s hands. “I don’t care, but take it outside. I don’t want a mess in the house.”

“Sweet!” Louis shouted, “Let’s roll!”

He ran outside, popping his bottle open, stuff coming out. He screamed as he ran out in the yard. “Come on, let’s play!”

“Crazy bastard.” Zayn said, running out after him. He was doing the exact same thing Louis was a second ago.

“Pepaul!” Dakota said, running over to Da. “Would you care if we used the water hose?”

The others crowded outside and Dakota listened as Da talked to her. She smiled at him. “Thanks!”

I followed her out, shutting the door behind me. The guys brought a number of stuff. Louis and Harry were kicking a soccer ball back and forth. Niall, Zayn, and Liam were playing badminton with no net. Dakota was getting the water hose set when she reached into her pocket, answering the phone.

“Yeah, Dad?” She asked as she handed me the hose to put in the faucet. “What? You want me to bring Buddy over? Actually, I think it’ll be fine. Guess what? The guys are here.”

She grinned as she turned to look at the boys playing. “Yeah, it’ll be fine. Oh, you want to see who? Louis? What about Harry? Oh, okay.”

She hung up her phone, sticking it in her pocket. “Dad’s going to be mowing the back yard and wants me to bring Buddy over for a bit. Oh, and he wants to see Louis. Lewis!”

Louis held the ball to his hand. “It’s Louis God dammit!”

Dakota grinned as she jogged to him. They talked for a moment before they waved at all of us. “Be back in a minute!” Dakota yelled as they started walking up the road to get to Dakota’s house. “Where are they going?” Harry asked me as he came up to me.

“Dakota’s bringing her dog over and her dad wants to see Louis.” I answered, turning on the faucet.

Water started to spray out. “Dog? She has a dog! That’s so cool! Guys-“

I turned the hose to spray him with it. He gaped at me, hair half wet and soggy. I laughed. “You little-“ He started, grabbing the hose out of my hand and started to spray me with it.

I screamed, running away from him as he chased me with it. Even if it has been three weeks since I’ve seen the guys, I wasn’t about to live it down. We were going to have a fun day. We were going to make up the days we haven’t seen each other and for the other days were going to miss.

*Dakota’s POV*

I wondered what Dad would want to talk to Louis about. We just crossed the highway and I could hear Kariann screaming and see Harry stealing the water hose from her. Louis and I silently walked down the street that was to lead to my house. “You don’t think the pap will be around, right?” Louis asked, checking out the street corners.

I rolled my eyes. “We’re walking in the streets of Hardinsburg. The town is practically dead. There’s no such thing as paparazzi here.”

“You sure?” He asked, raising an eye.

“You have my word, Louis.” I said, shaking my head at him.

“So where do you live?”

“Right… here.” I said, taking a turn from the sidewalk onto my yard and on the porch.

Louis was two steps right behind me. The door was open, the screen door closed so I yelled in. “I’m home-“

Dad’s head stuck out from behind the door, scaring the hell out of me. “God, Dad…” I muttered, opening the screen.

His hat was on and was shirtless. Grass could be seen on his chest as if he’s been working out in the yard. He looked behind me, seeing Louis not a foot from me. “Ah, hey there.”

I stepped in, Louis right behind me. “Uh… hi, sir.” Louis said, giving Dad a smile and reaching out to shake his hand. “Glad to finally see you again.”

“No need to act like a stranger. Call me Cecil.” They shook hands and they seemed to pick up a conversation quite quickly. I expected after what happened between Louis and my dad the first time they met, they would be awkward with each other. I guess I was the awkward one because I just stood there as the two of them talked and laughed at whatever was said.

I felt the urge to pee then, so I decided to use the restroom. I came out once I was done and stopped by the threshold to the living room. “I don’t know if she’s told you…” I heard my dad spoke. I hid in the hallway by the threshold, listening in.

“What’s that?”

“Because of what happened with the magazine, her mother pretty much abandoned her.”

Louis was silent, but he spoke after a moment. “I know… I was there whenever it happened.”

“I know she tries not to show it, but it hurts her. I guess it doesn’t help especially what’s going on at school also…”

“School?” Louis asked, confused.

My eyes widened in shock. Shit, he didn’t know. The rumors and stuff flying around my school. Because of that magazine, I was called lots of ugly names behind my back. Kariann and I were a hot topic at school, but I had a more bad reputation. I clenched my jaw, closing my eyes as I listened to my dad explain everything to Louis. “She didn’t tell you?”

“No. Not at all.” Louis said slowly, still processing the information.

Dude, I could hear the anger rising in his voice. “Thank you… for telling me.” Louis said. “And listen… that whole magazine deal, I’m am sincerely sorry about that. That day some stuff happened and she became upset. I was just trying to be a good friend and cheer her up. I should’ve known there were pap around, but-“

“Louis.” My father spoke up. I opened my eyes, hearing the stern tone in his voice. “I spoke to my daughter about this. She knows how much you blame yourself for all of this. I told her this and I’m going to tell you the same thing. Stop worrying over it. The media can be a bitch, but that doesn’t mean you have to fall into their trap. You did your part in explaining, now it’s up to everyone else whether or not to believe you.”

I felt a small smile come to my face. The words sounded familiar to my ears. “Okay?” Dad continued, I could practically see him placing a hand on Louis’s shoulder. “Stop worrying about it.”

Louis was silent for a moment. I peeked over at the doorway, looking out. Louis was staring at the ground, a small smile on his face. I could see the relief in his eyes, but they were still ceased with worry. “What about school? How is she handling that?”

“Well, at first, I didn’t know about it. She either acted like she didn’t care, or was very good about hiding it. I found out whenever the school called, telling me to pick up Dakota to bring her home for the day. It seemed like Bonnie got into a fight with one of the school girls over her. It pissed me off when I found out and I talked to her about it.”

“What did she say?” Louis asked.

I leaned back against the wall, sliding down, not wanting to disturb them. They were taking my absence as an advantage to talk, but I feel like if I were to walk out now, Louis would make me explain later. I’d rather if Dad did it and save me the trouble. And possibly tears. I didn’t know what it was, but whenever Louis was around and I talked to him about anything troubling me, I’d just cry. I was done crying tears. I just wanted to be happy with my friends.

“That girl… I swear. You know what she told me? ‘As long as the ones I cared about knew the truth, I didn’t care.’ To hear those words, I wasn’t sure how to react. It seems to me too that she talks to you a lot, and another girl… what’s her name? Ellen?”

“Eleanor?” Louis spoke up.

“Yeah! That’s it. She says the two of you make her feel a whole lot better. She has Kariann and Bonnie and she’s been smiling… as long as she’s happy, I can’t do anything to change stuff. What’s done is done. The best you can do is move on.” I heard my dad sigh.

“Yeah…” Louis said, still not quite convinced.

I heard my dad raise himself off the couch. “I’m going to head back outside. I think Dakota might be in her room if you want to find her.”

I heard the screen door open and shut as my dad left. I heard Louis rise himself from the couch and walk to the threshold to the hallway. I saw his shadow elope over me as he looked down at my figure. “You heard?”

I nodded, wrapping my arms around my knees. He walked to my other side, sliding down the wall to join me in sitting. “Why didn’t you tell me?” He asked, pulling one leg up and stretching out the other.

I shrugged. Bring a hand up to rub my upper arm. I rested my head on my arm, not willing to talk. I heard Louis take in a breath. “I don’t know what it is…”

I looked up and over, seeing Louis shake his head as he rubbed at his eyes. “You seriously, just seriously…”

“Sorry I didn’t tell you, I just didn’t want to-“

“What? Worry me?” He interrupted, tone sharp enough to make me flinch. “Good fucking job…”

He rubbed at his face some more, running a hand through his hair. “Fuck… God, I’m so over this shit!”

He rested his head on the wall, looking up. I poked his arm, knowing he was angry with me, but I couldn’t help it. “Sorry, Louis. I should’ve told you sooner, but I didn’t want you doing something stupid like Kariann did.”

He looked over at me. “Do you seriously think that I would fly over and pick a fight like she did?”

I gave him a smile. “Not necessarily, but I know that you would beat yourself up over it. I think it’s time we let that magazine deal behind us. I mean, we haven’t seen each other in three weeks yet this is the first topic we talk about upon you coming. We should be talking about good things. We should be heading back and having fun with the others.”

I reached over, putting my hand on top of his, giving it a squeeze. “Can’t you trust me to be okay? There’s no stopping what others will think, but I can stop them. Somehow or another.”

He turned his hand over, intertwining our fingers. He brought the back of my hand to his forehead, letting it rest there. “I can’t just let you go back to school knowing that there will be people giving you shit.”

“Hey, Louis?” I asked, my tone slightly changing.

He looked up, turning his head. “Yeah?”

“How is Eleanor?”

He gave me a strange look, wondering why I was changing the subject. “She’s great. Why?”

I shrugged. “Curious. I never met her, so I’m just wondering. I want to know more about her.”

I saw a small smile spread across his face and his eyes going off to space. Our hands were still intertwined and I felt his thumb going in circles on the back of my hand. “She’s… just perfect. She’s the nicest girl you could ever meet. She’s honest… kind… and so damn sexy.” We both chuckled some. “I wish I would’ve brought her along, but she has Uni. She wants to meet you so bad and can only live with what I say to her.”

“You talk about me?” I was shocked to hear.

He grinned. “All the time. She loves talking about you. She wishes she can talk to you more. I tell her how crazy and fun you are, yet you have the most tender heart for a girl.”

I felt a smile spread across my face. It was nice to hear he said at least good things about me. “I usually tell her as much as I can, but not everything.”

I gave him a confused look. He shrugged, continuing. “Like when you cried… you’re business with your mum… stuff like that. I try not to reveal stuff that’s too personal.”

“Oh…” I said.

We sat there for a few more minutes in silence. I stared at our still intertwined hands. We never really had a one-on-one talk like this, nor have we ever held hands. Maybe it was the span of the three weeks of basic conversation that brought us together. I had to admit, Louis was probably one of the guys I was closest to, right up with Liam. Strange though, whenever I looked at Louis, I didn’t see him as a brother. A very close friend, but he didn’t hold the brotherly feelings Liam often displayed.

I took a deep breath. “Hey, maybe we should head back to the others. I mean, it is Mommy and Daddy’s birthday.”

He smiled, nodding in agreement. I untwined our hands before jumping up to my feet. He followed suit as I made my way back into the living room to grab Buddy’s leash and out the front door. We walked around back where my dad was walking around with a weed eater. He waved at us before stopping the machine. He started to wave me over. I handed Louis the leash. “You mind?”

He shook his head as he walked toward my dog. Buddy barked upon seeing Louis, beginning to sniff and jump all over him. I walked to Dad. The weed eater ran loudly as he began to talk to me. “Listen, that boy there is a good man.”

I slowly nodded, giving a look that made me wonder where he was going with this comment. “I wouldn’t let a man like that get away from you.”

Oh, my God. Was my dad seriously saying this? “Dad, seriously, it’s not like that! He’s got a girlfriend.”

“As much as he worries about you, I doubt you can say that anymore.” Dad said. I gaped at him, slapping him on the arm. Dad gave me a look and smiled. “I’m just kidding. It’s good you have such close friends. Now get that dog out of here before I weed-whack his head off.”

I rolled my eyes before walking back to Louis with a leashed Buddy. The Border collie barked, practically smiling with his tongue hanging out as I came near. I bent down, giving my dog a good rub as he licked me on the face. I took the leash from Louis and lead the two of them back on the street. Buddy stayed in between Louis and I, often looking up between the two of us. It didn’t take long before we made it to Kariann’s yard and I unleashed Buddy.

“Buddro!” Kariann called out excitedly as my dog went running straight toward her.

She was soaking wet and Zayn had the water hose. “What a pretty dog!” Niall complimented, coming over to Kariann to squat down before my dog.

Everyone practically smothered the poor thing. Buddy wasn’t sure who to go to either. Buddy may have been a nice dog, but he was quite shy. He barked, staying right next to Kariann. Louis and I neared enough to see the guys petting him.

The day was probably the best I could relate to for the past couple of weeks. Maybe it was because the guys were here and I could just be free with myself. I not joking. I almost cried whenever they had to leave again. “You just got here!” I whined, pouting.

Zayn placed his hand on my head before rubbing back and forth, destroying it. Well, it was already destroyed, I was still wet from the water hose war. We hugged tightly. I hated this. Hugging hellos and hugging goodbyes.

Liam was next.

I let out a huge huff as I stared up at him. He wiped away a wet strand of hair from my face. “We’ll see each other again soon.”

“How soon?” I pouted.

He grinned, bending down to whisper the answer into my ear.

I felt a huge grin spread across my face. Niall came over to hug me next. Another bone-crushing hug. Jeez, that boy may be skinny, but he had his spats. “Actually… I feel kind of weird asking this from you…” Niall started as he pulled back.

“What?”

He looked at the other guys, seeming lost in themselves. He bent down to whisper to me. “Can I have Bonnie’s number? I really, really, really want to talk to her again.”

I grinned. “You’re cute, you know that?” His cheeks redden. I stuck my hand out. “Give me your phone.”

He handed me his iPhone and I quickly added her number. Funny how I could memorize my best friend’s numbers yet I couldn’t remember my own. “Thanks.” Niall, giving me another hug and kissing the side of my head. “You’re my bestest friend.”

“I better be.” I said, sticking my tongue out at him.

He smiled.

I hugged the rest of the boys, Louis being last. We shared a hug that lasted a while. “Sorry I got you mad earlier.” I murmured.

Louis scrunched his face up. “You didn’t make me mad, I was more upset with myself. Either way, I can’t stop what will happen at school. Focus on your studies. That should be the most important thing now.”

I nodded, agreeing.

Kariann and I waved them bye as they crowded into a rented van and drove off. I sighed. I already missed them. Nothing I could do about that, though. I would just have to wait until next month.

September 13th. Niall’s birthday.

Kariann and I would be going to London for a surprise.

I knew the perfect birthday present for him too.
