Brokedown Palace

Through the Smoke

The old familiar bar was dark and smoky, and the smell of alcohol and cigarettes filled the air. Casual conversation carried comfortably between each person who regularly came on Saturday nights, but the light murmur dropped to an almost non-existent hum when the lights lowered only accentuating the small beat up stage.

A stool and a microphone sat awaiting their owner as the door jingle cut through the quiet room. Heads didn’t even turn to identify the unfamiliar patron as he awkwardly made his way to an empty seat at the bar.

The atmosphere was strange to say the least, it was quiet and no one paid mind to the man now ordering a drink which to him was an anomaly.

He could often go places undetected for a total of 30 seconds, before someone a fan or not, recognized his youthful face.

Louis turned to the young tattooed bartender and order a pint before focusing his attention to the crowd of people and followed their gazes to the stage in the back of the room. He had just returned home, and after the last couple months he had all he wanted to do was drown his problems in alcohol.

He mumbled a thank you to the woman as she handed him his drink, and for the first time in a while he sat back and prepared himself to watch someone else preform.

A figure appeared out of the shadows and took a seat as it pulled an old guitar out of a cracked case. He noticed the delicate features of the mystery musician as a woman, and he squinted his eyes to try to make out her face.

But as soon as her light strumming began, his eyes were forced closed as he took in and listened to the beautiful playing. He had never heard something quite like it until she opened her mouth and began singing, “We were born before the wind, also younger than the sun...”

The soft raspy voice filled the entire room, and captured every soul in the audience. The raw emotion behind each word was enough to bring a tear to anyone’s eye, and Louis was no exception.

He grabbed his beer off the counter, and quietly made his way to the front of the room, he needed to take in every aspect of this performance and he found an empty chair right in front of the stage. Closing his eyes once again he connected with every word that was sung from the young girl’s mouth, he couldn't help but feel he had heard this voice before.

Her eyes also were closed throughout her entire set and she never once faltered as she sang from her heart.

Her last chord played and the subtle sound of conversation began up once again, as Louis unknowingly feverishly clapped. Her head shot up at the sudden sound and linked eyes with the beautiful man in front of her.

Her breath hitched in her throat and her eyes grew wide as she placed where the clear grey eyes were from. She almost too quickly gathered her stuff off the ground in front of her, frantically trying to get away before he could get out of his seat

As soon as her guitar was in her case she rushed over to the bar to grab her cash, before she turned her head to see a slightly confused but mesmerized Louis start to make his way over to her.

“Thanks Al I’ll see you again next Saturday”

“Sure thing Dyl see ya” he called out as she made her way towards the exit in the back.

She made her way to her beaten down car, and turned the keys into the ignition before peeling out of the parking lot leaving Louis standing by the door out of breath.

She sighed a breath of relief and hoped that would be the last time she would ever have to see him, and leaned her head against the back of her seat. She turned on the radio and let the light rock music fill the car as she placed her hand on her head and thought back to the last time she thought she would never see him again.

If you had writer's block, it doesn't show. My mom is an author, and believe me when I tell you I have seen BAD cases of writer's block. But, I couldn't tell on this that you had any kind of hindrance. Keep up the good work!!!! :)
