On Tour With One Direction
Will Things Ever Be Normal With Us?
ALMOST 1 YEAR LATER: June 2013
It was after my first year of college. I was majoring in music administration and was looking for a summer job. I was talking with my career counselor on campus and we were looking at potential positions for me to apply for.
“You have to pick something, Angela. You need a job. …oh here’s something.”
“What what is it?” I asked anxiously.
“There’s a position open from this month through mid-August as the tour supervisor for a band that’s on their world tour and there North America leg of it is this summer! For On—“ he paused and looked up at me from his paper.
“What?....who’s the band?” I asked a little worried.
“Just keep in mind that it’s a job for the summer and it’s not even guaranteed to be yours just yet…”
“Who is the band I would be working for?!” I asked frustrated. He showed me the article and underneath the description was none other than my favorite boy band One Direction…which contained the guy I vowed to myself I would never see again.
I walked into the interview room and sat waiting for 1D’s tour manager, Paul Higgins. I was planning on totally blowing the interview on purpose so he wouldn’t hire me. He walked in moments later.
“Hello are you Angela?”
“That’s me. Nice to meet you.”
“Nice to meet you too. So before I get started with my questions, the boys asked to be present for your interview so they’ll be asking some questions as well.”
“Oh…lovely. Send them in then.” I said reluctantly.
The boys walked in and looked at me wide eyed when they saw me. There was kind of a long pause before Louis said, “See? I told you it was our Angela!”
Well forget about blowing the interview now. All the boys did was talk me up to Paul about how great I was and how I would make sure everything was under control backstage and keep them out of trouble...or try to, they joked.
“Well miss, it sounds like you’re the perfect fit for this position. Welcome to the team, Angela.” he said as the guys cheered.
“We’re going to have so much fun with you here! Yeah you’re like our boss now, but still. Party!!!” Louis shouted and the other guys followed. Except for Harry.
“Hey.”
“Hey. …Long time no see, huh?”
“Yeah…it’s almost been a year since Disney.”
“Yep…long time.”
“Look, Angela since we’re going to be travelling North America together for the summer, can we just try to make this work with us? I’m not saying you have to be my girlfriend, but can we at least try to get back to how we were before I asked you out? I liked our arrangement then.”
“I liked it too, Harry. Until I started to fall for you. I can’t let myself do that. It would be too hard to prevent it if we went back to how we were. So…I think it would just be easier if we kept this…professional. I mean I’m your tour supervisor now and…that’s how you should treat me.”
“Angela—“
“Go get ready for the show tonight, Mr. Styles. ….you’re on in 20.” I said choking back tears. I walked away from the love of my life regretting every bit of what I just said…but it had to be done.
For the next month, all Harry was to me was my colleague. But I soon realized that even if we couldn’t be flirty friends, just a professional relationship wasn’t cutting it.
“Harry, can I speak with you for a minute?” I asked as professionally as possible because there were other management types around.
He walked over and said, “What happened to Mr. Styles? That sounds more professional don’t you think?”
“Look, Harry. You only being my client type is just…really weird and feels so wrong. I know it’s true but I realized that just because we’re colleagues…doesn’t mean we have to always act like it.”
“What are you saying?”
“I’m saying I want to try just being…friends. Like you offered when I left Florida. Except this time I’m really willing to make it work. I can be your tour supervisor, and friend. Just like I am with the others.”
He thought about it and said, “Let’s try it.” with a small smile.
“Thank you, Harry.” I looked at my watch. If we didn’t leave now we were gonna be late to the next venue! “Now let’s gather up the rest of the boys and load up that bus. Go go go!”
Wow…I’m starting to sound like Paul…oh well. Maybe things can start to be normal with Harry and I. I thought as I walked with Harry to the tour bus.
