The Silence That Surrounds

Chapter 3: Awake

Sophia’s POV:

The waves of darkness moved gently like a feather. My body swam, lofting back and forth into slow consciousness.

The first thing I was aware of was something warm and comfortable below me. I hadn’t regained any other sense other than minimal awareness. I was still free falling, still blind. I just knew that I was warm.

Something shifted from beside me. I didn’t know what it was but whatever I was laying on dipped and there was a presence.

I groaned, finally coming around, the swimming stopped and so did the freefalling. It took a few moments but my eyes finally opened.

The first thing to hit me was a massive embolism sized headache. It rocked my vision back into momentary darkness. It was so intense that my heart felt like it was in my ears, pulsating like an echo. I could feel it.

I tried moving my hand toward my head to massage the giant hangover. I frowned realizing my limb wasn’t obeying. I tried again, this time hearing a loud clink.

That’s when panic set in.

“What –“I trailed off, blinking multiple times to clear the black ink.

I felt the figure shift before something was put to my lips, I let out a scream and thrashed, blinded by white hot pain.

Nothing sounded and the white light darkened again, this time allowing me to see.

I blinked again, now fully clearing my vision, my headache pulsating in protest.

The first thing I noticed was I was on a bed, my arms resting on either side of my head, attached to metal cuffs that were attached to the side of the bed. Even before feeling hit the rest of my body, I could feel them already begin to chaff.

I whimpered, my head turning slowly toward the figure that sat beside me. He had curly hair and his piercing greens reflected in the darkness. He held a water bottle in one hand and two white round pills in the other. His face rested comfortable in his hard stare. He was analyzing me.

My breath quickened.

His silence was loud and unpredictable. He simply stared at me.

“Who – what? Where the bloody fuck am I?!” I finally screamed, my blue eyes wide in fear, tugging my wrists every which way they would go in terror. My body was pulsating adrenaline through me now and the headache was now just an afterthought.

Still, the man above me remained silent.

Instead, he waited for my breathing to calm. When he saw a slight decrease he moved the water bottle toward me again.

I jerked my head back.

“Who are you!? Where am I! Do you know who I am!?” I demanded, not remembering he had said my name earlier, right before I passed out. I had yet to recover those memories but they were starting to recover themselves pretty rapidly.

The boy with the blue eyes; my driver –rag –knocked out.

Then it hit me and I screamed, this time as loud as I could.

Harry’s face twisted into a strong glare and he slammed his other hand with the pills inside my mouth, pressing down to silence my cries.

I felt his hand tighten and seal my lips to it, the pills slamming into the back of my throat and I swallowed them out of fear of choking.

He still didn’t speak but his look was far more menacing than any words that could be said.

Instead I laid there in shock, just watching what he would do.

Harry whistled twice into the hollowed room, it was loud and shrill. I cringed, now aware of my headache again.

The door opened about forty-five seconds later. Another young guy with short hair entered.

“Yeah?” He asked, stopping near the door.

Harry gave me a stern look of warning before taking his hand away and standing. Walking past the blonde but not before handing off the water bottle and whispering something quick into his ear.

The other boy nodded and Harry was gone, slamming the dimly lit room back into darkness with the close of the door.

My breath hitched as he approached.

“Relax Ms. Stone. I’m just here to give you some water. I’ll be leaving once I get you situated.” The blonde promised.

“Who are you? Why am I here? What do you want from me!?” I screamed, hoping to get an answer but he just came toward me.

I flinched, expecting to be hit but he just drops his weight on the opposite side of the bed Harry had sat and put the water bottle to my lips.

“I’m Niall.” Is all he offered, his hand cupping the back of my head and lifting it so I could take a proper drink.

I accept the bottle this time, looking up at my captor. My throat was raw and there was still an aftertaste of the rag Louis had over soaked. His blue eyes were bright compared to my dark blue ones. His face was worn and tired, like he had just woken up from a light sleep.

“I’m Sophia. Why am I here?” I offered, my voice cracking with fright. I just wanted to know what was going on.

“We know who you are, Ms. Stone. Your concern as to why you are here is nothing short of an inconvenience but one that is unfortunately necessary. That’s all you need to know for now.” Niall confirmed, his voice tight and his blue eyes cold.

I whimpered but it was enough to quiet me, reverting the room back to the silence it once was.

“D-does my father know?” I stuttered, wondering aloud. I missed him already, he would know how to talk and deal with these boys. Sadly, despite me working for my father, he never fully taught me the ropes.

Niall put my head back on the pillow without a word and set the water bottle down on the nightstand beside the bed, reaching into his pocket and taking out a thick, dark rouge piece of fabric. It was embroidered with gold threading, like it came off a curtain.

“Please, Niall, I just want to know if my father knows, I’m sure he would be more than willing to address your concerns. He’s a fair man, he can help, whatever the plight. Kidnapping me won’t guarantee you a ransom and he doesn’t negotiate easily if he’s being blackmailed.” I tried to reason but Niall just stared down at me with the same blank stare before he took the end of the cloth in both hands and moved it toward my mouth.

“Wait! Don’t do thi –mh!“ My voice was muffled into the cloth as it slipped easily into my mouth.

Niall made sure it was firmly in before he leant forward his hands venturing under the back of my head, tying it securely.

“It’s late Ms. Stone. We need sleep and your screaming woke us up. One of us will be back to check on you in a few hours, get some rest if you can.” Niall suggested, his eyes going to the cuffs. He reached over on either side of me and clicked them a few notches tighter.

I groaned, my mind in complete overload but the headache was beginning to subside. Now my wrists hurt from the pinching cuffs. I tugged down at them in frustration, the loud clank sounding from the other ends of the chain jerking up and pulling taunt.

Niall smiled emotionlessly and turned to leave, his footsteps soft on the soft blue carpet.

“Goodnight Ms. Stone, sleep well.”

With that he walked to the door, shutting off the small light that had barely reached the bed, opened the door and left.

The darkness surrounded me completely now and the silence screamed. I had no idea what they wanted or why I was here. Why wouldn’t anyone tell me?

I let the tears I had been holding fall and looked back at the direction of the door, screaming into the cloth and yanking my wrists hard against my chains. I wanted to go home. I wanted my family.

I don’t know how long I kept up with my useless struggling or how long I continued to scream but the door opened again and another man stood there. This time with a beard and short clip from what I could make of his features thanks to the dull hallway light. He held something in his hand, making his way over.

“Bloody hell, you’re a screamer aren’cha?” He murmured without amusement.

I saw it was a syringe and my screaming started all over again.

My voice may have been muffled but it didn’t stop the sound from illuminating the small space, carrying the sound out.

When he reached me, he simply stared – which I noticed that’s all they seemed to do unless it was on a need to know basis and evidently, I didn’t need to know anything.

His eyes bore little emotion and he simply uncapped the syringe, plunging it into the crock of my elbow none too gently and releasing the unknown drug into my blood stream.

I gasped, a look of defeat passing my eyes but I still tried to fight the cuffs, no doubt in my mind that I had already severely bruised them.

The older man bent down and grabbed my wrists, holding them down to the mattress, his face dangerously close to mine.

“That’s enough tonight, Ms. Stone. Anymore out of you and we’re going to have to start implementing punishments and we really don’t like to do that. It’s more of an annoyance to us than anything. So be a good girl, huh?” He sneered, his voice sultry deep but dark with warning.

I moaned softly, unable to do anything but look up into his eyes, smelling a faint scent of mouthwash.

“The name’s Liam, in case you were wondering.” He added as an afterthought.

I don’t know how many minutes passed but I began to feel tired.

Liam noticed and got off me, heading to the door.

“Goodnight Ms. Stone.” He nodded before leaving.

I’d call them polite if it weren’t for the fact that I was bound and gagged to a bed or that they wouldn’t tell me what was going on.

I let out one final scream before the darkness started to blur my vision and overtake me. I tried to fight but was quickly losing the battle. Whatever they had given me was strong and before I knew what was happening, I slipped back into unconsciousness.
