Just You and Me
Prologue
-Isabelle's POV-
As I step of the plane, the California breeze fills my lungs, and the morning sun glows on my pale skin as it rises. The sky is painted in a beautiful orange blur, and everything looks so pretty here. I can tell it's going to be much different than Ontario, even though I haven't left the airport. I can't wait to start over.
My parents divorced last year, which is part of the reason why I'm moving here. I've been living with my dad and his fiancé for the past year, which was going fine, but they suggested I move out here to clear my head after Addie's suicide. She was my best friend, and after a rough year, she ended her life. I took it pretty hard, considering she was my only friend, so my father and Amy decided I should have a fresh start with my mother.
I follow the crowd through the airport, something I'm very used to doing. I've always been good at blending in, which is why I had a much easier time than Addie. She always stood out.
I arrive at the baggage claim, and luckily spot my luggage immediately. I quickly grab it, and weave my way out of the ever-growing mass of people.
"Isabelle!" My mother calls out. I spot her in the crowded waiting area and run over to hug her. She embraces me tightly.
"Hi mom!" I say as I hug her back. I take in her signature perfume, Chanel no.5, which is now laced with a beachy scent that wasn't there before.
"How've you been?" She asks in her typical motherly tone. She's been like this as long as I can remember, always put together and organized. I take after her in that way, but I like to think I'm a lot more fun.
"I'm good," I reply, not wanting to go into much detail. I'm sure my father has told her about Addie. My mother seems greatful for the lack of detail; she has never been great at feelings.
"And how are your father and Amy?" She asks. I can tell she's a little hurt by the divorce when I see a brief flash of pain across her blue-ish grey eyes.
"They're doing fine. I still don't know any details about their wedding though." I reply, and her usual cold stare returns.
"Well, I'm sure we'll hear soon enough. Come on, let's get you home. We have a big day of unpacking ahead of us."
We take the scenic route home, driving down by the ocean on the freeway. I look out over the sea at the morning sunrise, now revealed in all its glory, even though it's only 8am. It'll take me a few days to get used to the time change, but I'm grateful for the chance to remake myself. I hope I'll be happier here.
As we're driving, Mom points out Lakewood High, where I'll be starting 11th grade tomorrow. It's going to be hard starting in the middle of second term, but I should manage fine. The school looks nice on the outside, with a few Palm trees scattered on the grass beside the entrance. I can tell I'm going to get lost the second I walk through the door. I'm a little nervous to say the least.
I just hope it's nothing like my old school.
