Collision Course

Nothing like a Hot Bath

It had been almost five days since I had seen Liam, yet my mind always found its way back to him; even while sitting in my cramped little office, attempting to transcribe a manuscript.
“Damn it.” I mumbled as I attempted to read the same work for the sixth or seventh time.
“Someone getting a little annoyed, ready to quit, are we?” Rodger said in his condescending voice.
“Because that is what you do, when you don’t know a word. Quit, or just give it to me.” I was able to murmur back.
“What has gotten you all in a wad?” he asked.
“Not like you actually care.” I spat back.
“I do, when it means that you could compromise my project.”
“Nothing, I’m fine. Sorry.” I tried to sound convincing because I was not even sure myself, if I was fine. Why couldn’t I get Liam out of my mind? I was not normally the girl who did things like that, not on the first date, not ever. I mean, it had been a fantasy to do something like that, but that was it. A fantasy that I never thought I would fulfill. My legs had felt like jelly for two days after him, and I just now was feeling like I had begun to recover from my toll in the sack.
After Rodger had left me to his project, I found myself alone in the room, but nothing close to alone in my mind. “Shit, it is going to be a long day. The past few days, have been a long few days.”

After my tube ride home, all I wanted was a nice warm bath to soothe my body and calm my mind. I didn’t really want to eat anything, but I forced myself to make a salad and eat some fruit before taking some strawberries into the bathroom. Bath salts were something I always had on hand, and I began running the water for a nice and warm, lavender scented, bath. Maggie came home as I was undressing in my room, said a quick hi before making herself some food.
In the bathroom, I turned off the lights and lit a few candles, which I placed on the toilet since in a small London flat; there is not much excess room in the bathrooms. Slowly, I lowered my body into the water, which stung a little at first. Steam was rising from the milky water, just the way I liked it.
I couldn’t help but shut my eyes and take a big deep breath. “Ahh,” nothing is better than relaxing in a bath. Unfortunately, Maggie was making all sorts of noise in the kitchen. “Guess you take what you can get.” I incoherently said.
I heard the television in the next room as in illegible static notice came through the walls. I tried my hardest to block it out, but Maggie was laughing at whatever it was on the television. “Twenty minutes, Maggie! You couldn’t give me twenty minutes of peace?!” I said more to myself then to Maggie.
Thankfully, she must have taken a phone call since she turned off the television and I could hear her talking quietly to someone. After letting my eyes shut and my mind wander, I heard something, but had no idea what it was besides loud and obnoxious.
“What is that?” it sounded like music, but I don’t remember Maggie turning the television back on.
I heard heavy footfall, as Maggie went running into one of the bedrooms. I could clearly hear her laughing. Without warning, she burst into the bathroom, laughing like I had never heard her before, and she handed me my phone.
“Answer it!” She demanded between giggles.
I looked at the phone, and the scream flashed the name Liam. He must have added his number when he was over.
“Hello.” I said calmly as I pressed the answer key.
His beautiful, melodious voice came through, sounding quite nervous. “Why haven’t you answered any of my texts?”
“It’s nice to hear from you too” I said, but secretly I was racking my brain. Had I received any texts?
“Sorry, but seriously, I have been texting you all day.” He almost sounded a bit panicked.
“I am pretty sure I mentioned at some point that I am not very good with technology and tend to forget about my phone.” I replied.
“No, pretty sure you didn’t. I thought you were avoiding me.” He said in a semi state of panic. “Anyway, hi. How are you?”
“I’m good.” I wish I could have thought up something witty to say, but nothing came to mind.
“Did you like my ring tone?”
“That’s what that was! I couldn’t figure out what the noise was.” Maggie, who had planted herself on the bathroom floor, began to laugh.
“I like it!” She screamed into the phone.
“Shoo, Maggie. No one likes you.” I said as I swatted at her like a fly.
“Glad someone did. Do you even know what that song is?” He inquired.
“Do you honestly have to ask me that?”
“It is called ‘Me So Horney.’” He snickered. “It’s a classic.”
“Sounds like a classic.” I said, “But what was the hurry? What were all these texts about?”
“Well, I was hoping I could take you out tonight.” He purred. “But, it seems that you are busy.”
“I am extremely busy, attempting and failing at taking a relaxing bath.”
“A bath. So, you’re talking to me while lying naked in a hot bath.” I could hear the sensual inclinations in his voice.
“Get your head out of the gutter. How else am I supposed to take a bath?” Before continuing, I took a big breath. “But if you wanted to take me out, how about tomorrow?”
“Tomorrow is no good for me, I have been avoiding my life lately so I need to get some stuff taken care of. Got to make sure my band mates are not too mad with me. How’s Friday?”
“No good for me, Maggie is taking me on a blind date.”
“What, a blind date?” he honestly sounded hurt. “Well, I guess we can wait until Saturday.”
“You know what, no. Let’s do Friday. I don’t have to go on the blind date since it is probably going to wind up being some creep.” That and I honestly didn’t want to go meet someone else when I could have Liam.
Instantly, I could hear a change in his voice, his excitement came through the line as he answered, “Great, I will come and pick you up at seven.”
“See you Friday, Liam!”
“Enjoy your bath, Allie! See you.”
No sooner had I ended the call, Maggie came into the bathroom. “Get out! You have so much explaining to do!”
I joined her just a few minutes later, clad in my favorite Star Wars pajama bottoms, a wife beater, and my hair combed but still wet. Sitting on the couch, she handed me a rather large class of red wine which I sipped before either of us began talking. “Well?” I asked.
“What was that about? What happened last weekend?” Maggie demanded, her eyes fixated on mine as if she could read my mind.
“Well, you should know, since you are the one who set the whole thing up. Or at least that is what I am assuming.” I continued, not letting her answer, “Why don’t you tell me how this whole thing started.”
“Well, since you so kindly asked,” Maggie replied, taking her sweet time to sip wine and draw out each word. “It started when you left the club last Thursday. He followed you after you bought him his drink, but by the time he got to where we were on the dance floor, you had already left. So he did the next best thing and talked to me. He made me leave the club so that he could ask me about you and that is when he asked me to help him meet you.”
“That’s a great story, but I doubt that happened.”
“Why do you doubt yourself so much? He honestly wanted to get to know you, it was very sweet.”
Now, Maggie was not someone who was normally mushy, but she loved playing matchmaker. Since being in London, I had only spend one weekend not joining her on a date with one of her ‘close friends’ whom she thought would be perfect for me. How am I supposed to believe that someone really wanted to meet me, and not her wanting them to meet me.
“Now, it’s your turn.” She said. “What happened after I left the pub?”
“Well, we had dinner and dessert. Then he came back to the house and we…” I paused shortly, continuing, “had tea.”
“Alexandra, what happened to the ‘I don’t sleep with guys on the first five dates’ rule?” she said, in her best impersonation of my American accent, looking both shocked and intrigued at the same time.
“I don’t know,” I replied in all honesty. “Something just washed over me, like he brings out the darkest side in me. It was like he knew all my darkest fantasies, and made them come true.”
“That’s so” she gave a longer pause then needed, “hot! But, what are you going to do about it now?”
“Well, I am going to go to dinner with him Friday, and I am going to tell him that I don’t do things like that.” But after a bit of considerations, added, “That, or I am going to jump his bones.”
“I vote the second.” Maggie threw in, as if she had a vote.
“Well, as much as I would love to continue our fascinating conversation, some of us actually have to be able to function at out early morning jobs.” And with that, I left my wine and headed for bed.
Before jumping into my extremely inviting bed, I looked at my phone only to see that I had twenty text messages. I read through them slowly. They started out nice and gentle, saying things like: **Hey beautiful. L** **What are you up to Allie? L** But by the time I got to the last few, desperation was clearly there. The last thing I remember before drifting into my world of dreams was the screen of my phone and the text “hey beautiful.” He thought I was beautiful.
