A Part of Your World

You Were Born to Fly

“Where the hell have you been, Loren? You were supposed to be back like six hours ago!” Connor stood on my front porch with my daddy, yelling as the girls and I clamored out of the truck.

“Connor, I’m sorry. We got tied up.” I set my bag down on the porch and wrapped my arms around him, hoping to calm him down, but he jerked away.

“Tied up doing what? Landon said you were hanging around Atlanta with a bunch of boy band punks. How about you tell me the truth?” His voice was still raised and anger flashed through his eyes.

“Gracie, Katie, go inside.” I commanded. They hurried through the door, and my daddy followed. “Yes Connor, I spent time with a boy band today. And you know what? They are some of the sweetest boys I’ve ever met.” I folded my arms on my chest.

“Well why did you lie about it? I mean, it’s not like I’m worried about losing you to a bunch of queers.” He grinned at his own comment, but it made me sick to my stomach.

“You don’t even know them!” I yelled back, offended for the boys. “I didn’t tell you because I knew you’d overreact, like you are now!” I threw my hands up in the air, completely frustrated and exhausted from the long day I’d had.

“You spend one afternoon with them and now you’re defending them. Maybe I should be worried!” He growled. I hated when he overreacted like this, which happened a lot.

“Connor, you have absolutely no reason to worry! I’m not the one who continuously cheats on you!” I grabbed my bag and went inside, slamming the door and leaving him on the porch. I didn’t care where he went or what he did. I just wanted to take a hot bath and ease my mind.

Gracie and Katie were seated at the table with the rest of my family for supper. Everyone looked at me when I walked in, obviously hearing the argument that had just taken place outside. “How was your weekend?” My momma asked. I could tell she was hoping to take my mind off of what had just happened.
“Great.” I said, sarcastically. “I’m gonna go run a bath.”

“Hey, Loren.” I heard my dad call out, so I turned around. “Next time, you need to be sure to let Connor know if you hang out with other boys, or if you’re running late. It’s the least you could do, since he’s your boyfriend.”

My face grew hot and I wanted to scream at him. He should be taking up for his little girl, not his best friend’s son. I stifled my anger turned back around. I took off for the bathroom, biting my tongue, in complete awe of what my father had just said to me.

I soaked in the bubbles for two hours, flicking through different apps on my phone. I was debating on whether or not to call Harry, but I’d decided not to. I figured he was busy and I didn’t want to bother him, even though it would have been nice to talk to someone who actually listened. I switched the water on in the tub, deciding that I was pruny enough. As I rinsed off, preparing to get out, I heard a loud bang. I hurried and grabbed my towel. I wrapped myself up so that I could figure out what was making the noise when I heard another bang. It was coming from the window in the bathroom. I pulled the curtain back just enough to see out. It was Connor. He was throwing rocks at my window. How original. I slid the window open.

“What the hell are you doing?!” I spat, still not too pleased with him.

“Trying to apologize. Will you come down here, please?” He smiled sweetly, and part of me wanted to run downstairs.

“Why should I? You were completely impossible earlier.” I folded my arms across my chest.

“Loren, stop being so stubborn. I have something I want to show you. Hurry up.” He turned and walked around the house to our front porch. I huffed and closed the window back. I didn’t really want to be around him, but I was curious as to what he had to show me. I hurried to my room and threw on some cut-off jean shorts, a t-shirt, and my boots. I ran a towel through my hair, so it wouldn’t be dripping wet. I tiptoed down the stairs, and slipped out the door, hoping not to wake anyone. It was well after 11pm and the whole family had been asleep for quite some time.

“I love the way you look when you’ve got wet hair and are in cutoffs and boots.” Connor grabbed my waist and pulled me into his chest, kissing my hair. I pushed him off.

“Why did you call me out here?” I folded my arms.

“Follow me!” He grabbed my hand and hopped into his pickup. I followed. He drove down the dirt road that led to my house, pulling off into one of the pastures.

“Connor, this isn’t funny. It’s the middle of the night. Why are we going out into the field? I’m not in the mood to go mudding, plus it hasn’t even rained.” I whined.

Connor just smirked and kept driving through the bumpy pasture. The truck came to a stop right next to the creek that ran through our property. He hopped out and I quickly followed. He grabbed a blanket out of the back seat of his truck and walked over to a spot near the creek. He fluffed the blanket out and plopped down. “Well, are ya gonna join me?” He grinned.

I rolled my eyes and walked over to him. “Connor, what are you doing?” I placed my hands on my hips.
“Making it up to you.” He patted the spot next to him on the blanket. I reluctantly sat down as he continued. “I got a little jealous hearing from your brother that you were off gallivanting in the city with a bunch of rich boys. I can’t give you all the things that they could give you, but I can give you my heart. And I just wanted to tell you that you have it. My heart is all yours. And I do love you. I was so worried about losing you today, that’s why I was angry on your porch earlier. I’m sorry Loren.” He put his arm around me, pulling me close. I was silent. I thought about his words, thinking about how many times he’s made things up to me before. He’d never told me that his heart was all mine, though. Or that he was ever worried about losing me. I leaned my head on his shoulder, realizing that he was my future. I had to get over this crazy idea of Harry and realize what I had. Maybe Connor meant it this time. We laid back on the blanket, and looked up at the stars. The sky was beautiful, and I soon drifted off to sleep in Connor’s warm embrace.
------------

Moooooo. My eyes flickered open as I felt something sniffing my face. I quickly realized where I was. Connor and I had fallen asleep in the pasture and had never gotten up to go back home. Daisy, my cow, was hovering over me. I giggled and sat up to pet her. She was my pet. She was born on our farm six years ago in the frigid winter. She almost died, as did her mother from the hard labor, but I’d brought her in the house and bottle fed her. My parents thought the way that cow followed me around was ridiculous, and I guess she’d found me out here in the pasture. “Connor!” I called out. He was snoring, not even realizing that we were surrounded by a herd of cattle. “Connor!” I yelled this time, poking him in the cheek. He rubbed his eyes and realized at once what was going on.

“Guess we were both really tired, huh?” He smiled, pulling me on top of his chest, tickling me. I erupted with laughter and tried to fight back, but it was no use. He finally let me go and I jumped up and pulled my boots over my feet.

“Wait, what time is it?! I have to be at the restaurant!” I panicked, realizing I had a job to get to. “Miss Bonnie’s gonna kill me! Hurry up!” I ran and jumped into the passenger seat as Connor scrambled up and threw the blanket in the truck.

“Wait a minute!” He snickered, checking his phone and starting the truck. “It’s Sunday.”

“Oh my God.” I rolled the window down and stuck my head out. “I’m so stupid!” I screamed. Some of the cows looked my way, causing Connor and I both to giggle. “Well on the bright side, it’s my day off!” I put my face in my hands.

“But, we’re due in church in an hour, and you smell.” He pinched his nose as he drove through the field.

“I’m pretty sure that’s cow poop you smell.” I scoffed at him.

“No, that smells much better.” He laughed as I punched him in the arm.

The sermon was about second chances – forgiving others the way God forgave us. I sat between Gracie and Callie. The rest of my family lined the pew. Connor and his family were in the pew in front of us. The whole time the pastor spoke, I was fixed on the back of Connor’s head. Maybe this was what I was supposed to be doing, and where I was supposed to be. Maybe my life right now was molded around giving others a second (or in Connor’s case, a fifty thousandth) chance.
--------------

Work dragged on the next day. I’d only served three customers, and I’d worked a 12 hour shift. I’d mostly sat in a booth and rolled silverware while staring out the window and evaluating my life. I was worried about money. I was supposed to take Gracie to Tennessee the upcoming weekend for the concer, but I was low on money. My parents would give us money, but I hated asking. I liked having my own, since the whole town was struggling financially. I locked up the restaurant door, and headed to the truck when I felt my phone buzz in my pocket. I slipped it out and quickly typed in my password.

How about you come a night earlier and we have dinner to catch up? xx –Harry

This was bad. My heart fluttered at the sight of his name, and the fact that he wanted dinner was even more flattering. I wanted to go, but I didn’t have the money to pay for another night at a hotel, and then there was Connor. I’d even considered not going to the concert, just to avoid any confusion, but Harry’s text made me change my mind. I couldn’t go a night early, but I had to go see him. Something inside me knew of that for sure. I tapped on the keyboard to reply.

I would love to, but I can’t! I have to work an extra shift. :( We’ll have to get caught up before the show! –Loren

Aren’t you staying the night in Nashville? We can do it on Sunday. xx – Harry

He sent another text before I could reply.

Dinner, that is. Lol xx –Harry

I giggled at his clarification and responded.

Maybe lunch? I have to be back home Sunday night! –Loren

Sounds good! Can’t wait! xx –Harry

I started the truck, and made the drive home, with my thoughts only on Harry.
-----------

The rest of the week went by painfully slow. Connor was at my house nonstop, trying to woo me. Part of me fell for it, but the other part was defensive, because this had happened too many times before. He didn’t want me going to Nashville, Tennessee, but I had the tickets and just enough money from the work week, so as I loaded the truck on Saturday morning, he helped.

“Just be careful. Are you sure I can’t come?” He asked as I handed him my bags.

“I’ll be careful! And no, you have a farm to help your dad take care of.” I sighed. He threw my last bag in and wrapped his arms around my waist. He kissed my forehead, but I my phone was vibrating in my pocket so I pulled away from his grip. It was Harry. I felt my cheeks redden.

“Hello?” I sounded a little too shocked. I had no clue why he was calling me.

“Hey, Loren! Is there an airport near you?”

“Um, no. Why?!” There was no way I could afford plane tickets. That’s why Gracie and I were leaving so early – for the long drive.

“Well, I kind of need a place to land this jet. SURPRISE!”

“Ha ha. Real funny. Why’d you call me?” I didn’t want him to make me guess.

“No, I’m serious. You didn’t think we were going to ask you to drive all the way to Nashville did you?” He almost scolded me.

“Harry, are you being honest right now?” I had to know the truth.

“Pinky swear.” I giggled at his response.

“We don’t have an airport, but we have a bunch of open fields.”

“Perfect!” I told him where exactly we were, and he relayed the info to his pilot so that he could map our coordinates to land. Gracie and my parents climbed inside the truck, while Connor and I hopped on the back so that we could drive to the pasture to meet the landing plane. Connor was silent.

“Connor, what’s wrong?” I asked.

“Nothing.” He was short, and I knew something was up, but he obviously didn’t want to talk about it, so I left him alone. I fidgeted in my seat, because Harry was about to see exactly where I come from, and who I’m supposed to be. He was also about to meet Connor and my daddy. We heard a loud roar and saw the jet landing in the distance. We pulled up shortly after to see the boys exiting the plane. I jumped off of the tailgate, and began to pull bags out of the car, while Gracie ran to meet the boys. My parents and Connor helped me with the luggage. Harry walked over to us.

“Hello!” He beamed. The other boys stayed back by the plane, talking with Gracie.

“Hey! Harry, this is my momma and my daddy.” He shook my daddy’s hand and my momma hugged him.

“Pleasure to meet you! You’ve raised wonderful daughters.” Harry smiled.

“I’m Connor. Loren’s boyfriend.” Connor stuck out his hand, rather rudely, interrupting the conversation between Harry and my parents. Harry shot me an odd look as he shook Connor’s hand. Connor looked Harry up and down. “Hope you didn’t mess those pretty shoes up in this pasture.” Connor scoffed and I could have hit him. My daddy let out a little chuckle, causing momma to glare at him.

“Well, guess we’d better get going!” I tried to break up the awkward moment that Connor had caused. Harry took the bags from my dad and Connor while Gracie and I said our goodbyes. “See y’all tomorrow!” I said, but Connor grabbed my waist and pulled me into him, planting the deepest, longest, kiss on my lips – with full tongue. My momma and Harry looked equally shocked while my daddy ignored it. I pushed him off of me, annoyed, and turned for the plane, ready to get away.
