The Misfits
Chapter 46
"Do you always kidnap people, or is it just me?"
"I didn't kidnap you!"
"You showed up at my house at eight in the morning and told me we were going for a drive."
"Alright fine, I kidnapped you," Harry laughed before reaching over and taking my hand. I couldn’t help but break into a smile as he kissed the back of my hand.
"So will you tell me where we're going now?" I tried again.
"Nope."
"Harry! Pleeeease?"
"It's a surprise."
"You're so difficult."
"Right back at ya babe," he said with a wink. I let out a dramatic sigh and propped my feet up on the dash. He pinched my thigh in retaliation. "You're getting scuffs on my car!"
I dropped down my feet and pulled off my shoes only to replace them on the dash a moment later.
"There ya worry wart, your baby is safe." I leaned over and began playing with his curls. Since he wasn't going to tell me where we were going I pulled out my book for entertainment. We were quiet for a new minutes, Harry hummed to low music while I read.
"What are you reading?" He asked after a while.
"Room," I replied without looking up from the page. "It's about a little boy who lives his whole life in a single room. His mom had been abducted before he was born and she raised him within it."
"Sounds interesting."
"It is. Elaine gave it to me," I shrugged. "Want me to read aloud?"
"If you don't mind," he smiled, gently running his fingers across my legs. His touch was like fire on my skin, making my heart race. I cleared my throat and began to read aloud as we hit the open road.
A few hours later my phone ringing interrupted me. I looked at the caller ID and shot Harry a smirk before accepting the call.
"Hey Maeve."
"Where the fuck are you?" Her annoyed tone rang through the phone.
"I'm not really sure actually,” I said, shooting Harry a look. He rolled his eyes in response.
"What do you mean you're not sure?" Maeve asked as I turned the phone to speaker.
"Hazza's driving."
"HARRY EDWARD STYLES." We both jumped as she screamed through the phone.
"Maeve I-don't-know-your-middle-name Whitker!" he yelled, a laugh appearing on that beautiful face of his.
"How dare you kidnap Thalia without telling me first! We were supposed to go shopping today!" Maeve was yelling so loud both Harry and I winced away from the phone.
"You can go tomorrow," laughed Harry. "Besides you get her to yourself all the time."
"So?"
"So you can spare her for one day."
"You're the worst. Can't you just accept the fact that she's my lover?"
"Nope. She's all mine," grinned Harry. I smacked him playfully on the arm as he let out a laugh.
"Help me Mae!" I yelled before Harry quickly clapped a hand over my mouth.
"You can't keep her from me Styles!" Harry took my phone and ended the call. I opened my mouth to say something but he beat me to it, "look at that! We're here!"
I spun around and slid to the front of the seat as we passed a sign that read “Holmes Chapel”. I leaned forward as we drove down the lane. Little brick homes lined the street and as we reached the center of town an old Church rose above the nearby buildings. Green could be seen everywhere, in the grass, trees and all gardens. It was beautiful.
“Oh! Look at it Harry!” I turned to look at him who was watching me with a grin plastered on his face. “It’s so quaint and lovely and perfect!”
He merely laughed at my response. We continued to drive through the neighborhoods before pulling up to one brick house in particular. I turned to Harry with a frown.
“Probably should have told my mom we were coming home,” He joked. I stared at him for a moment, letting his words sink in. He had taken me to meet his parents. He stepped out of the car and ran over to open my side where I still sat frozen.
“Are you serious?” I hissed.
“Relax, I’m sure it will be fine,” he replied with a smirk. I glared at him in response.
It was a beautiful day with hardly a cloud in sight. I closed my eyes and let the fresh air fill my lungs, attempting to calm the knot that had just formed in my throat. I cannot believe he didn’t tell me.
“Come on love.” Harry took my hand and literally pulled me towards the house. Before we had even reached the front step the door was opened and a black haired woman ran out. She pulled Harry into a tight embrace while I stood by awkwardly playing with my hands.
“I didn’t know you were coming to see me!” She cried before holding him at arms length to look at him. Harry had talked about his mother Anne so much I felt as if I had already known her. But now, standing here in front of her, I was a bundle of nerves. Though Harry had talked to Anne nearly every day, I was still unsure just how much he had told her about me.
“Surprise!” Harry smiled. “Oh mom…this is—”
"Thalia!" Anne beamed before quickly pulled me into a bone-crushing hug.
"It's nice to meet you," I smiled back shyly. I felt Harry snake his arm around my waist and I relaxed slightly.
"Finally!" She beamed. "Harry's been hiding you from us...I think he's worried we'll scare you away-"
"Mom," Harry hissed. I bit back a smile as we headed towards the house.
"Oh I'm sorry dear was I embarrassing you? Perhaps if you had given me a heads up I could have prepared a speech!" Anne ruffled his hair lovingly before leading us inside. "Oh boy...the house is a right state and-"
"It's lovey," I interrupted. We were now in the entry. From here I could see into the small living room and neighboring dining room. Part of the quaint little kitchen could also be seen. I turned to her with a smile, "trust me it's much cleaner than my home."
Harry broke into a snicker causing both Anne and I to smack his arm. "Ow! What was that for!"
"Don't be rude Harry." Anne scolded while I burst into a fit of silent giggles.
"You see how she abuses me?" Harry asked, pulling me closer.
"Oh mother you let anything in the house these days!"
I turned to see a blonde girl pop up from the other side of the couch. She had an eye brow raised and was glaring at Harry. I couldn’t help but stare at her. She was literally Harry in female form.
"How come Gemma never gets yelled at for being rude?" Harry questioned.
"Because I'm not a troll." She replied before sitting up on her knees so she was at our level. "Oooooh. You must be Thalia. I'm glad to see you actually exist."
"Of course she exists!" Cried Harry. "Did you think I made her up?"
"Well we hadn't seen her in the five bloody months you've been talking about her," Gemma countered.
"He didn't want to share," I replied. Noting that she had said five rather than the one month we've been official. "He's selfish."
Harry pulled me into a bear hug before throwing me over his shoulder. I let out a scream as he ran through the house while twirling me around.
"Harry! Put Thalia down before you kill her!" Laughed Anne.
"See!" Harry cried with me still on his shoulder. "It's always me!"
"Listen to your mother!" I cried, smacking his ass. He lowered me gently onto my feet and brushed the hair out of my face while I glared at him.
"Harry, why don't we show Thalia around town?" Anne proposed, interrupting our moment.
Both Harry and Gemma opened their mouths to protest but I beat them to it. "That would be wonderful!"
-
"Oh there's the park! One winter when Harry was eight I mixed dirt and snow together and convinced him it was chocolate ice cream...he was throwing up for nearly an hour."
I burst out laughing at Gemma's story. We were walking a ways ahead of Harry and Anne and with every place we passed Gemma told me a new embarrassing story about Harry.
"Oh and there's the jewelry shop. When Harry was six he accidentally stole a bead from there and was convinced the police would come after him and throw him in jail. We couldn't figure out why he was crying the whole day."
"Aww," I giggled.
"What lies are you telling up there Gem?" Harry called to us.
Gemma stuck her tongue out at him before wrapping her arm around my waist. I did the same to her and we continued walking as if we had known each other our entire lives. And I felt like I had. Gemma was hilarious.
We ate lunch at a small restaurant where Anne and Gemma tag teamed in my interrogation. It felt like the time I had met Clodagh all over again. Harry thought it was pretty entertaining.
I couldn't help but admire him even more as we sat with his mother and sister. He was so relaxed, even more than when he was with the guys. I knew he missed them. He always talked about his family. And it was easy to see how much he cared for them.
After lunch we split up and Harry took me towards the park. We ended up finding a nice patch of soft grass in the sun and rolling around until we grew dizzy.
"I can't believe you smuggled me away to Holmes Chapel," I said after a while. "And without any warning! How long had you been planning this?"
"Since the flight back from the states," he shrugged. "Do you like it here?"
I looked around at the trees and small shops. The townspeople hardly gave us a second glance and it was the first time I had ever felt normal with Harry in public. It was an escape from his other life.
"I do. I love it here," I smiled. "And I love your family too."
"You and Gemma seem to get along well," Harry replied, narrowing his eyes suspiciously.
"She's been telling me a few stories." I let out a giggle as he rolled over to lounge on his side. He looked like a model and he wasn’t even trying.
"What and you believe her?" He asked. He was staring at me intently, a smirk playing on his lips.
"So you're saying "The Harry Show" didn't exist?"
"She told you about that!" He cried. I burst into laughter at his embarrassment. Gemma had told me that when Harry was in second grade he would charm all the girls by putting on "The Harry Show" at recess. Apparently he used to dance around in front of a dozen girls singing "Hello By Baby".
"So it's true?" I laughed.
Harry was silent for a moment before muttering, "Yes."
I burst into another fit of laughs before Harry began pinching and tickeling my side in retaliation. I let out a scream and tried to roll over but he had pinned me down.
"You have to promise to never tell anyone!"
"Why? I think it's cute." I smirked. He rolled his eyes and rolled back onto his back. I couldn’t stop my chuckle as I tried to imagine an eight-year-old Harry singing and dancing around the playground.
“Stop laughing.” He muttered. But this only caused me to laugh harder.
“Does anyone have a video?”
“You are ruthless!” he cried. He rolled over to attack me once more however his phone interrupted him. "Hello?"
I assumed it was his mother yelling at him to come home. That or one of the guys. As he talked I entertained myself by watching a little old man feed birds. Now that I had visited, it was easy to see why Harry loved to come back here. This slow little town was the polar opposite of his fast paced life back in London. I tried to imagine him if he had stayed in Holmes Chapel, if he wasn't a famous superstar. He'd probably be at that small bakery he always talked about. Or completely Uni like he had planned.
"WHAT?"
Harry's yell snapped me out of my thoughts and I turned back to him with a frown. He was sitting bolt upright, his jaw hardened and looking like he was about to murder someone. As he continued to listen he turned to me with worried eyes. It was beginning to freak me out but I waited until he had hung up to ask any questions.
"Who was that?"
"Louis."
I could practically see the wheels trying in his head, debating if he should tell me whatever bad news he had just heard.
"Has something happened?" I asked cautiously. I was praying that no one had been hurt. Or maybe they had some scheduled promotion they forgot about...
Harry let out a sigh. "The media found out you're Paul's daughter. The fans aren't too happy. They're calling it a scandal and you a..."
I stared at him a moment before I burst out laughing. Harry frowned in response.
"Ha! A scandal!" I cried after catching my breath. "Although I guess it is pretty scandalous. The secret daughter of the head of security ends up dating the most famous singer of One Direction. And no one knew!"
"Thalia, be serious."
"The only thing that would have been better was if they claimed I was having an affair with one of your band mates. Though maybe they'll make that up later..."
"Thalia!" Cried Harry, looking at me incredulously.
"Harry, relax! It's fine!"
"No it's not fine!" He ran his hand through his hair before taking me by the shoulders and shaking me gently. "Nothing about this is fine! They can be ruthless. Thalia they have ruined relationships before-"
"Well they're not going to ruin ours," I said determinedly.
"They're feeding it to the fans that you used Paul to get to me."
"I mean...I kind of did Harry." I said with a hallow laugh. Harry froze and turned to me with an even deeper frown. I sat up and took his hands in mine, giving them a gentle squeeze.
"I mean think about it. If it weren't for my dad I never would have met you. I wouldn't have gone on that soccer trip and we would never have become friends. My dad paid for me to come out to America and 90% of my time was spent with you. Even now when you guys are on break from tour look who I'm hanging out with!"
"I kidnapped you that doesn't count," sassed Harry. "Hell, I kidnapped you all of those times! The guys and I were the ones who convinced him to always bring you. And Niall and I were the ones who gave Paul the idea to fly you and Kenzie out!"
"Well I guess the media has it backwards then," I teased. "Maybe you used Paul to get to me."
"I definitely did." He smiled. He rested his forehead on mine and even though he was no longer yelling, I could tell he was still upset. "Just promise you'll tell me if you get any hate from the fans?"
"You know someone once told me some great advice...do you know what you should do if people are talking behind your back Harry?"
He let out a sigh. "What should I do?"
"Fart."
He burst out laughing despite himself and I couldn't help but smile along with him. That dimpled smile could brighten any day.
"Who told you that?" He cried. "Maeve?"
"Archie. You know seven year olds can be pretty wise." I said as I stood up. It was getting late Anne had made us promise to be back in time for dinner. I held out my hand and with a great amount of effort managed to pull Harry up. Together we walked hand in hand slowly back to his house.
"You know you never answered my question," Harry said after a moment.
"I know."
He let out a sigh. "You know that's the one thing about you that drives me inane."
"My strong will?" I mused.
"That you refuse to ask for help."
Out of the corner of my eye I could see him look over at me. But I remained silent, not knowing how to respond.
"You don't have to do everything on your own you know," he said quietly. "You can let me in."
"I know." I had barely whispered it, but Harry gently squeezed my hand letting me know he had heard. We were silent for another minute before I said, "You know it was him right?"
Harry visibly tensed at my mention of Calhan. I don't believe that Harry has the capacity to hate anyone, but if he did - it would be Calhan.
"First thing we're doing when we get back to London is go to the police station." Harry growled. "I don't want that fuck anywhere near you."
"They can't arrest him for being a prick Harry," I replied. He was halfway to a smile before he caught himself.
"They can arrest him for stalking you."
"But he's not stalking me. He's invited to the parties too Harry. And he knew people at the gallery showing," I countered. "It's not like he follows me home."
"He better not be fucking following you home." Harry had stopped walking and was staring at me hard. I opened my mouth to try and calm him down but he cut me off. "You're staying at mine when we get back."
"Stay at yours?" I laughed disbelievingly. "What until I graduate?"
"Yeah."
I started at Harry, completely dumbstruck. He was serious about this. And my laughing had made him even more irritated then before.
"I mean if it keeps you safe then yes," he huffed.
"Harry, if you wanted me to move in all you had to do was ask," I smirked. Finally be broke into a laugh.
