Sergeant Walsh Defends Police Department Against Bribery Claims
By Elizabeth Tate
Expected Publish Date: May 29, 2014
The Star

"There is miniscule evidence to support these treacherous claims accusing our department of accepting money in exchange for a blind eye towards crime..." said Sergeant Walsh in her address to the public on Tuesday morning at 11:56 am.

The alleged rumors came to light when Councilmen Parsley made a generous contribution of £150K to the station's Technical department and committed tax fraud several weeks later. He went before a judge Monday morning and is facing up to 7 years in federal prison. When asked about the council member's arraignment in court, the Sergeant refused to give any commentary, but the public was more than willing to volunteer their opinions.

Emily Knight, former campaign manager of Councilmen Parsley, told reporters from the Guardian and the Star that she was "outraged by the behavior the Councilmen displayed," and surprised at how "untrustworthy the police have proven themselves to be."

Similar scandals involving law enforcement in Doncaster have been covered by the media in the past, but this case of bribery is unprecedented. At the time, the police cannot identify any accomplices to Mr. Parsley's crime, but the District Attorney's Office is running an investigation on the department. Although no primary suspects have been determined yet, they are confident arrests will be made soon.

As the city puts the system to the test, the residents of Doncaster pray for justice and for the corruption to end.
_________

I read over the press release one last time before sending it out to my editor to check over for mistakes. I closed my eyes, releasing an exasperated sigh, before opening them up again to glance out the café window. With the sun slowly setting over the horizon, it would only be a matter of time before darkness swept the city. And before my night terrors would return. They've been happening more and more frequently these past few days, but I couldn't conclude why.

It's probably the spirit of my sister haunting me for not looking hard enough.

"Ehem." The sound of a man abruptly coughing dispersed my thoughts into the air as I snapped my head around only to see Mr. Grey smirking at me as he pulled out a chair, sitting down.

"Mr. Grey, I thought you went home already. To what do I owe the pleasure of seeing you again tonight?" I asked him as I lowered the screen of my computer.

"My wife wanted me to pick up some coffee for her on the way home. But what about you, Liz? I thought your shift ended at six o'clock." He looked at me quizzically.

"It did, but I wanted to catch up on some more work. I finished writing that press release you asked about," I said to lighten the mood, "In fact, I sent it to you about five minutes ago." Alex shook his head back and forth, a profound smile threatening to spread across his face.

"I'm a lucky man. I don't know many journalists who are able to stay on top of their tasks like you do. You make my job a hell of a lot easier." Alexander chuckled as he got up from the chair. "Well, I better get that coffee before Veronica throws a fit. I'll have an edited copy of the article ready for you by midnight."

"Alright, get home safely Alex. Tell Veronica I said hello," I called out to him. He looked back at me and nodded his head before joining the line to the register.

I tossed the house keys onto the coffee table as I skimmed through the pile of mail in my hands. Most of these letters were junk mail from a magazine issue I forgot I subscribed to--nothing particularly out of the ordinary, or so I thought. When I got to the last letter in my hand, my eyebrows furrowed in confusion. There was no return address. I tore it open from the side and pulled out the sheet of paper that was inside. I unfolded the paper, and my heart almost stopped beating on sight.
