Fixing Broken Roads

Chapter (1)

I feel it all, I feel the blood pumping through my veins with each beat, I feel the warm tears steadily streaming down my cheeks, I feel the aching in my heart from the hole that was just made. "I'm sorry...your mother didn't make it." The sentence was permanently stuck in my head as I stare at the heart monitor that is no longer in use, at the I.V's no longer supplying medicine to the weak and fragile woman I loved. "God Dammit!" I shout to no one in particular as my hands shakily run through my matted blond hair. My Mother had been battling cancer for six years, it was a constant fight. Between the regularly scheduled treatment plans, to the sleepless and painfull nights I never once saw her frown. Such a strong woman.

I wipe my eyes on the arm of my sweater and slowly stand from the chair. "I'll miss you Mom" I say one last time before I exit the small hospital room. I receive many sympathetic nods on my way out to my car, and once I make it there I sit for what seems like an eternity to me before I start up my small truck. As it putters along I think of the good times we had, all the memories of being five and being pushed on the swing, being twelve and being taken to my very first day of middle school, and being a new teenager and getting an entire shopping day with my Mom. I will never forget the times I had with her, the same way I will never forget my Dad, or my younger brother.

"Damn you fucking cancer." I mutter to no one. "Damn you beer and drugs, and damn you people keeping my brother from me!" I pull into my house and as soon as I am I side I plop down on the couch and fall asleep.
