The Notebook

Girl in yellow coat

It has started out as a regular day by all means. I got up, showered, got some breakfast and left for work. I take the underground into the city since I can't face driving in London in such hours. Really, you must be brave or mental and I'm neither.
I work at a firm on Oxford Street, I know cliché right? Well, that is me, a cliché kind of lad, though I must note, my life is not too shabby really, I work at this good place called 'Horan & sons'. It's this big family from Ireland that own the firm and they have branches everywhere basically, the bloke having a handful of sons, sending them across the globe to manage the family business.
You would also think they would be stuck up and bratty, having achieved such a stand of success only by family name right? Well you're in for a surprise. The son's weren't handed these jobs, they worked extremely hard to get where they are, starting from the bottom and working their way up, learning the business from the foundations. They have started at the firm back home, studying hard, all finishing with honour rolls at the University of Harvard, knowing that if they'll succeed, a job will be waiting for them.
How do I know all this you may ask? I am best friends with one of the sons- Niall, we met at Uni and became fast friends. I was second runner up with my grades, and on graduation day his father shook my hand and asked me to come see him the following day. So it has been a little over a year since I've started working for Mr. Horan and I have never been happier.

The tube was packed with people and I took a deep breath knowing this is better than trying to drive. I got right in time for my train and for some reason it wasn't as packed as normally. I even had a seat. I suppressed a smile so people won't think I'm strange and sat down. I’m about to take my phone out and play my all time favourite candy crush when I noticed her. She was nothing special really, I mean I know I might sound shallow but she really wasn't. She had this light brown hair, and fairly white complexion. She was skinny but not too skinny, in long jeans and a yellow coat over it with a red beanie- which by the way was what made me notice her in the first place. Such bright colours on such a gloomy day are bound to get noticed. Phone in hand, I guide my way into my game, sending one last glance over to the bright coloured dressed girl. She was sat reading a book right in front of me. That was what made me put my phone away and watch her. She had ear buds in, listening to music, while reading, meaning she didn't want to be disturbed. I can understand that, and if it was anyone else I probably wouldn't be so fascinated by it, but she was different. The way she was reading, captured by the story it was mesmerizing. She was holding on to her book, gulping down the words with such thirst. By the emotions placed on her features, I could tell it was a sad part. People were getting on and off without noticing her or me, but I couldn't stop watching. At some point she had tears running down her cheeks and she wasn't average to me anymore. The way she got caught up in her book was the most beautiful thing I have seen in a while. I watched as she reached out her hand wiping away her tears, not caring she is crying on the tube, in front of so many people, all that mattered to her was the story line.
It was my stop to get off, and I got up reluctantly wanting to continue watching her face expressions, I watch her from where I stand waiting for the train to stop and open its doors.
Suddenly she looks up and sideways, and for a moment I was sure she felt me staring at her, but then she gets up and rushes out passing me swiftly. She was so caught up in her book she nearly missed her stop. I watch her step off the train, followed after her when I notice she dropped something. It looked to be a diary of some sort. It was a strong green, bright like the clothes she was wearing, and I bend to pick it up. I notice her far in front of me, and start rushing after her to retrieve it.
"Hey! Yellow coat lady!" I called out, trying to push my way to her. I got annoyed glances from people I passed, since pushing is rude and not so forgiving, especially this time in the morning.
"She dropped this," I explained to a woman who sent me a cross expression, trying to pass her to the stairs.
When I turn my head back I trip and fall over, nearly causing the old lady in front of me to tumble over as well.
"Young man, you should watch where you're going," The old lady's husband said, as he held on to his wife's arm supporting her.
"I'm terribly sorry, I hope you didn't hurt yourself," I offered the little lady a smile.
"It's all right love, things like this happen," She assured me with a friendly grin.
"Have a lovely day," I wished as I passed them, noting I have lost the yellow coat and the girl who was wearing it.

"Harry, fancy seeing you walk through those doors bright and early," Niall winked at me as I passed his office doors. I was late and I knew it, since I had tried to find the girl, finally giving up and heading into work. Also knew Niall didn't really care if I came in late or not, just liking the opportunity to taunt me.
"Good morning to you too," I took a seat in front of him and opened the green diary.
"Have you been running? Did you miss your train?" He questioned eyeing me carefully.
"No, no, it was nothing like that I just-"
"I told you to stop taking the tube, just drive in, you have a parking spot at the car park I don't know why you keep refusing to use it," Niall shook his head in disbelief.
I rolled my eyes, sick of him commenting about me not driving almost every morning I come in. I glanced down at the diary taking in what is written. Her hand writing was small and tidy, and she used a bright purple pen- no shocker there.
"What have you got there?" Niall inquired noting I wasn't listening, too occupied with the diary.
"So there was this girl on the tube, I've never seen her before," I started to tell him about my morning ride in.
"Was she pretty?" He wiggled his brows at me.
"Well, not out of the ordinary, but there was something different about her, she caught my eye," I replied.
"How come she caught your eye then?" Niall questioned, him being such a ladies’ man, he couldn't comprehend why I would waste my time on an average girl.
"Well at first she was the only girl on the tube in a bright yellow coat and a red beanie," I explained.
"That is just awful," Niall pulled a face.
"Yeah well, I was about to play with my phone when I noticed the way she was sat, reading her book with such intensity as if no one was around her- she was reading something sad since it made her cry- she was crying right there and then on the tube not caring about anyone else but her story," I exclaimed in amazement.
"That is just weird Harry," Niall shook his head in disapproval.
"No really mate you should have seen her- it was as if- as if- don't even know how to explain it- it was just beautiful!"
"God you are a twat," Niall chuckled.
"Anyway, we got off at the same stop- mind you she almost missed it so occupied by her book," I went on.
"This is why you shouldn't be reading on the tube in the first place," He pointed out to me.
"Yeah well, she hurried out dropping this on her rush, and I tried running after her to give it back, but then I fell over and nearly took down with me this old lady, and just lost the yellow coat."
"What does that say?" Niall's interest perked up, being the lawyer that he was, loving these kinds of mysteries. You see, even though my friend might have come off as a git, he wasn't. It was all a form of speech between us, and he was always up for finding the truth and helping people out.
“Just what she has to do and her schedule,” I sighed.
“Who keeps a schedule in a diary these days? It’s all in your phone or tablet now.. Let’s have a look then,” Niall beckoned for the diary. I handed it over to him for inspection.
“Mr. Horan, Mr. Tyler is on the phone for you,” Niall’s secretary peeked into the office.
“Take a message Katelyn please, I’m in an important meeting with Mr. Styles,” Niall informed her. She nodded and closed the door.
“Important ha?” I mocked him.
“Well it is mate, we must help this damsel in distress- how else will she know her schedule?” Niall said in a serious tone opening up the red book.
“She is quite a busy girl this yellow coat of yours,” He gathered.
“What does it say?”
“Well she has a bunch of appointments, well had.. This was last week.. not so helpful is it? Let’s see what she has next,” Niall flicked through the pages to these upcoming few days.
“Well well... this is interesting.. Nick Stone’s birthday party- at ‘Little miss sushi’ this Friday,” Niall mentioned.
I got up then and walked around to Niall’s computer, pulling the keyboard over to me.
“What the hell are you doing?” Niall moves aside to make me some more room.
“If that is written down it means it’s important to her, which means she will attempt to be there,” I explained to Niall.
“That doesn’t explain why you’re hijacking my computer,” Niall remarked.
“Nick Stone you said? I wonder if he’s on facebook..” I trailed off, typing in the name.
“Brilliant! They might have some photos together!” Niall said excitedly.
“Yep.. nothing like a little stocking, to find out more about yellow coat,” I smiled.
“You cheeky boy , this isn’t the first time you’re stocking someone on the net is it?” Niall smirked.
“Please, don’t act like you have never done this before,” I brushed him off.
There were a few Nick Stones so we clicked through a few, checking their birth dates, seeing if any of them are close to today’s date.
“This might be him,” Niall said pointing to the date.
“He also seems around her age..”
“He’s going to be 20, that is a great age,” Niall compliments.
“You liked being 20 I reckon?” I winked at him.
“What a party that year was.. Do you ever hear from any of those girls?” Niall questioned me.
“No.. sometimes a photo comes up on facebook.. We had some time with them ha?” I said dreamily.
We clicked through this Nick’s profile. Like most blokes it wasn’t limited to people who aren’t friends with him.
I ran through his photos slowing down on group photos with girls.
“I think that might be her,” I stopped and pressed on one photo.
It was. She was kissing this guy’s cheek, and at the same time holding two fingers behind his head.
“No tag though,” Naill noted.
“We’ll need to check this later, not like you- I do have an important meeting,” I tapped Niall’s shoulder, straightening up.
“I’ll come looking for you during launch, we can continue then,” Niall decided. I nodded in agreement and left for my office.
“I was just about to call the police,” Rachel my secretary greeted me.
“You’ve missed me! That’s really heart warming,” I brought my hands up to my chest, placing them above my heart.
“Don’t flatter yourself Harvard boy, you are late, and you have work to do,” She handed me over a file.
“Shit!” I hissed, glancing down at the name printed on it.
“You forgot,” She smirked up at me.
“Dammit-“
“Now now Harvard. Calm your horses, I have rescheduled it to 13:00,” She winked.
“How did you know?” I demanded.
“Katelyn called me up to let me know you are in an ‘important meeting with Ni,” Rachel smiled.
That is what I loved about Rachel. She wasn’t afraid to be informal with us calling us by made up nicknames. Also she made it her business to know everything which came in handy in times of need, like today.
“On my launch break though?” I moaned out loud, referring to the meeting she rescheduled.
“That’s what you get for being a naughty boy, next time remember your meetings instead of playing detective with your boyfriend over there,” She pocked her chin out towards Niall’s office.
“You better watch your mouth young lady, I am your boss after all,” I narrowed my brows at her.
“Sure love, why don’t you start with your work?” With that she turned her chair back to her computer.
I was about to turn to my office when something she said registers.
“Detectives ha?” I leaned over her desk.
“Yes Sherlock,” She hummed.
“Rachel... I just had a wonderful idea!” I exclaimed in a hushed voice.
“Give me the name and diary,” She already had facebook open on her browser.
“I don’t know her name.. but she is attending this blokes birthday party on Friday- his name is Nick Stone, his profile picture is him in snowboarding gear and she is the girl in the photo kissing his cheek and holding two fingers up behind his head.”
“Very well, now go take care of Glick corporate please,” She shooed me away.
“You’re the best,” I sang, walking into my office and sitting the file on the desk.
I don’t ask Rachel how she knows the things she does, since truthfully it scares me. As long as she gets the work done which she does I’m on a strict need to know policy with her.
I open up the file about Glick corporate. This guy Simon, a real stuck up sod owns this company and he is suing this other company- HD globes saying they stole this start up, which I really don’t give a shit about, however, Glick pays the firm loads of money each month which means this needs to be handled in the best way.
