August #4 Secrets
*Sammie’s POV (2pm, Friday the 7th)
“Who was that?” Louis asks. “Hannah and Susan. They’re two of my best friends that you met the first time I came to Applebee’s.” “Oh I remember them. You all did seem pretty close.” “We are. We’re as close any group of friends can get. …They were there for me when no one else was.” I say thinking back. “And now I’ll be here for you when they can’t be.” Louis says nudging my arm. “Thanks…again.” “And you’re welcome…again.” He chuckles.
“All right well I should head to my old building to get them. I’ll see you at Applebee’s, Lou.” I say getting up to hug him. “See you. I can’t wait to see the look on their faces when they find out we’re living together.” he says hugging me. “Yeah it’ll be interesting. I just hope they don’t get the wrong idea.” “…Why would they get a wrong idea? What could be wrong about this?” “Um…nothing. They’ll love that you took me in and they’ll be grateful to you. Later, Louis.” I say going out the door.
What I didn’t wanna tell Louis was that the girls could think that he and I like each other. Romantically. They could think that over the summer, we had a classic “summer romance” and that we’re in love or something and now we’re living together to “take the next step” or whatever. And that’s so not true. I have no family left alive, I only have the girls. And none of them can live with me because of college.
Louis offered to take me in so that I wouldn’t have to have two jobs and go to school to pay for an apartment. He’s like the big brother I always wished I had. He’s my guardian angel. Plus, I wouldn’t want them thinking that Louis is a “cradle robber.” I would’ve told Louis that, but I thought it might hurt his feelings.
In no more than ten minutes, I’m at my old building. It’s pretty convenient really. I pull up to the front and I see two of my lovely sisters. “Sammie!!” they shout in unison. I park my car and get out to greet them. “Girls!! I missed you guys so much!” I say hugging them both.
“We missed you too, Sam!” Hannah says. “So, we think we know your secret.” Susan says as we get in the car. …what? “What do you mean?..” “We know you got a new apartment. It’s pretty obvious since that one is empty.” Hannah says pointing back towards the building.
“So is it bigger than your old one?” Susan asks. “Yeah actually it is. A little bigger. The only other thing I’m gonna tell you about it is that I won’t have to worry about paying rent anymore. The rest will have to wait until we can video chat with Emily and Mackenzie.” I say mischievously. “Awh man! C’mon we’re dying to know!” Susan says. “Nope! Tell you what. Tomorrow we can text them and set up our meeting.” I propose. They look at each other and say “Deal.”
“Good. Now what movie do you wanna see?” I ask. “Well…I looked up movies and times online and guess what movie just happens to be having a one night showing of, ladies…” Susan says. “It can’t be…really?!” I ask. “Yep…The Notebook!!” Susan and I scream. All of a sudden, Hannah bursts into tears.
“Hannah, what’s wrong? You love The Notebook!” I say worried. Somehow, she starts crying harder. I decide to pull over and join the girls in the backseat. “Hannah, what’s going on?” When she can form words again she says “It’s a long story.” “All right. I’m gonna drive us to Dairy Queen and get us some blizzards and you can tell us everything, okay?” She nods her head and I move to the front seat again.
We get to Dairy Queen and I get us our blizzards. I bring them back to our table and both Susan and I sit next to Hannah. “Okay, girl. Explain why you cried about The Notebook before it instead of during it.” Susan says putting her arm around Hannah. “Okay. Well I already told you, but Sam..I met a guy in London named Harry. And we’re dating now.” “Oh my gosh I’m so happy for you! So you guys are doing long distance?”
“Yeah…we’ve been together for over two months now. Anyway, one of our dates that we went on while I was there was to the movies. And he surprised me with a one night showing of…” “The Notebook!” Susan and I finish. “It must be something traveling around the world.” Hannah says. “Hannah, I am so sorry. We don’t have to see it if you don’t want to. We can pick something else.” I say. “That would be good. A comedy that isn’t romantic would be nice.” “Done.” Susan says.
After the movies, I drop Susan and Hannah off at their houses. I quickly go home to change for work and then do my shift at Applebee’s. At 10:00, right on time, Louis and his cast mates come in loud as ever and go to their table.
I get their orders like usual and they all flirt with me except for the “creep” whose name I’ve come to learn is Joe. They stay longer than usual laughing and joking and they all seem to be poking fun at Louis. I don’t know what they’re saying but he looks embarrassed.
I slowly collect their plates and their checks. They all leave one by one and leave their $5 tips and as usual Louis gives a few extra. “Louis, you don’t have to give me extra anymore. It’s okay. Living with you is enough.” I say giving him the money back.
“No, I want you to take it. You still need the money for other things and minimum wage won’t cut it. Please.” he says handing the money back. “Fine. Thank you, Louis. You’re such a great friend.” I say giving him a hug. “I’ll see you at home.” “You’re my best friend…See ya.” Louis says before he leaves.
He turns back when he’s at the door. “Hey, Sam?” “Yeah?” He hesitates then says “Nothing. I’ll see you when you get home.” he says before going out the door. “…Bye, Lou..” I say confused. He’s been acting weird lately. It seems like he wants to tell me something but he never does. Kinda like how I don’t wanna tell him that my friends might think he’s a cradle robber and that we like each other.
Maybe when the time is right, we’ll be able to tell each other what it is we’re hiding. I hope it’s soon, because I don’t like keeping things from him. I want to be able to trust him with everything. He’s the only caretaker I have.
