Alayna’s POV:
We finally got to the café after a short awkward walk. It may have been short but it felt like forever. Being this close to him again is bringing unwanted feelings that I know I shouldn’t be feeling anymore.
“Hey, what do you want? My treat.” I was snapped away from my thoughts and as soon as I looked up, his green, warm eyes met mine. “Oh, uhm, whatever you’re getting.” I flashed a faint smile to lessen the awkwardness in this unusual morning.
“We’ll get two coffees…wait, scratch that, she’ll have hot chocolate and just breakfast muffins for both of us.” His exuberant nature was the complete opposite of mine. I felt bad that I couldn’t reciprocate the energy he was providing me.
“Let’s sit by the window. I know you prefer window seats.” He gave me the softest smile and I just realized now that he’s been spitting facts about me that I didn’t know he even knew. “How’d you know that? And also, why did you get hot chocolate for me?”
“I don’t know. I just remembered from last year I guess.” I furrowed my eyebrows at how innocent his answers were. He’s playing it off as if it’s not an impressive feat that he’s remembered little things like that. It took a while for Jared to remember little things and it wasn’t just pure observation but rather me hammering it onto his mind.
“So…how you’ve been this whole year?” He played with his fingers whilst trying to avoid any eye contact. I know he knew how awkward this is getting and I know I had to help him salvage what little dignity this morning has left.
“It’s been a rollercoaster ride but can we set that topic aside for now? I really just want to enjoy this morning. So, why don’t you tell me what your plan is for school? Being an exchange student can be exciting. I mean I should know, I’m an expert at it.” I straightened my posture and gave a wink. I tried to lighten the mood and I really hope he plays along.
Harry’s POV:
“Oh, yes, I know.” I was taken aback by her change in demeanor. Give it to Alayna to try and save whatever’s in front of her and right now, it was this mess of a morning. This is what I loved about her; she’s selfless like that. I should know since she was willing to give us up for the sake of Jade.
“So? C’mon, tell me.” As much as I know she’s faking her light mood, it’s really helping. The awkward silence wasn’t there anymore and for some reason, the sun is shining brighter.
“Well, so far, I’m enrolled in a few business classes and one language class. I’m trying to get my French perfect.” Her jaw dropped as I finished my sentence. “I must have similar classes with you then! C’mon, let’s compare schedules.” She quickly pulled her phone out and showed me what her schedule will be like.
“Look! We have French together and a few management classes. Great! I can copy off of someone in French.” She giggled a bit and I was honestly almost fooled by her excitement. I know at this moment, she’s trying to convince herself that this is great but we both know deep inside, this might not be the best situation for her.
“And here I thought you were the smart one!” I quickly teased her and she let out another laugh. The morning went by with this immense lightness. As much as it was fake, I enjoyed every bit of it. This is exactly what I wanted us to be. We may not be in a romantic relationship but honestly, as long as I’m around her, I couldn’t be any happier.
