The Babysitter
"I got sick?"
*Earlier that Day*
Luke's POV
"Stop talking to her," I warned.
Calum rose an eyebrow, "I don't see why you care who she talks to,"
I clenched my fists, "knock it off,"
"No," he sassed.
We glared at eachother for a moment.
"Tell me why you don't want me to talk to her," he demanded.
I couldn't think of something good to respond with. It needed to be believable, and that was hard, because the only believable reason I had was the one I didn't want to say.
Cal smirked, "you like her,"
"I do not," I lied.
"Yes you do," he accused, "you wouldn't be so mad at me right now if you didn't,"
"I just don't want you to talk to her. You know We don't get along," I tried of play it off.
God I was mad. I had watched him saunter on over and talk to her while she was at her locker. He was getting all the right reactions out of her too. Calum was just naturally good at that, he knew how to get people to do what he wanted. He even made her smile. The only smile I've ever gotten from her was either sarcastic, or a smile of pride when she insulted me or something. It was never a genuine smile of happiness. Unless of course, her happiness it at my expense, which quite possibly could be the answer.
I hated how she gave her attention to him like that. I despised it. I had no place to, I knew I was being completely irrational but I couldn't stop. These last couple days have opened my mind and I realized that I actually liked her a lot. It brought out a rather vicious side of me. I was jealous and even I knew it.
Calum growled, "c'mon Luke! Just say it already!"
"What?" I snapped.
"Just say that you like her! We all know you do!" He gestured to he, Ashton, and. Michael.
Ashton and a Michael pretended to be too engrossed in their phones to participate. Calum and I always got along, except when we didn't. We were two stubborn and rather cocky assholes and neither of us liked losing a fight.
"Fine," I rolled my eyes, "I like her. Okay? Are you happy now?"
He nodded, "that's all I wanted to hear."
"Now leave her alone or I'm going to beat your ass," I snarled.
He held his hands up, "whatever, I'm not attached to her like you are, I can live without her,"
I didn't even care what else he said. I was just happy that he was backing off. After that, the mood got light again. The tension from before vanished into thin air. Sure Calum and I got into the most arguments out of the four of us, but we always got over it quickly.
Makaylas POV
*Back to where it left off in the last chapter*
"I heard all the rumors," Luke sighed.
I followed after him. A small sigh escaped my lips at that.
"It'll be fine Makayla," he assured, "you how it goes. It'll blow over and soon enough they'll forget and move onto picking on someone else,"
I nodded, "okay,"
"Why don't we head home," Luke suggested, "I'm pretty fed up with this place for the day,"
"How are we gonna do that?" I asked, "all of the doors have alarms on them, I checked,"
He stopped walking, "you were going to leave?"
I nodded, "well yeah, everyone kept giving me dirty looks and whispering about me when I walked by. They called me a bunch of things too. I just wanted to go home,"
He nodded, "alright. Then that's what we'll do. We'll just say you're sick, and since I'm technically your guardian at the moment, I get to leave too,"
Wow. That's actually a pretty good plan. I knew he was quite smart to begin with. Liz used to teach math here years ago, and she obviously brought up intelligent boys. Both of Luke's older brothers were really smart too, but I'm pretty sure Luke was the smartest of them all. He was really good at math especially, I mean, he tutors some kids after school sometimes.
I also knew there was a lot more to him then he let on. He showed himself as your everyday highschool student. I felt as if there was something that he didn't really tell people. Maybe he had some really weird talent, like juggling or making really good animals sounds, I don't know. I've known him for long, but we weren't really deep into eachothers lives.
We came to the nurses office. She looked worried to see me again.
"What's wrong dear?" She asked
Luke looked down at me expectantly.
"I don't feel well at all," I lied, "I got sick,"
"Oh that won't do," she shook her head.
Luke and I both tensed at that. We thought she didn't believe it.
"You should go home hun," she advised.
She didn't sound like she really meant what she said, probably skeptical as to why Luke was here.
"I don't want to miss any class miss," I continued to lie, "I don't want to get behind,"
Wow. I honestly could have tricked myself with how easily that came out. It actually sounded like I was worried about missing class. Her expression changed at this. She was eating it up now.
"Oh don't worry your little head dear," she assured, "if you get sick then it is always best for you to head home and get rest right away,"
I sighed, "if you say so,"
She wrote me a pass.
"I'll call your parents," she said.
"Actually," Luke intervened, "um, our parents are away on work, and I'm technically responsible for her."
"How old are you?" She quizzed.
"18," he responded
"I'm still going to call your parents," she narrowed her eyes at him.
She turned away, grabbing the phone and dialing the number my parents had given in case of emergency.
While she did so I looked up at Luke. A sly smirk was playing on his lips. He peered down at me and shook his head, trying not to laugh. I smiled, but quickly dropped it as the nurse turned towards us and leant on the desk. She twirled the wire in her fingers as she spoke into the reciever.
"Hello, is this the parent of miss Makayla Wright?" She asked
We waited, only being able to hear one side of the conversation.
"Oh, hello mrs wright, I'm Miss Sansone, the nurse? Well Miss Makayla isn't feeling well at the moment. She got sick, and I want to send her home. When can she be picked up?"
Again, Luke and I shared a look. I think this was the first time we've ever conspired together on a plan. Usually were just arguing and disagreeing on everything.
"Oh? You're on holiday in London? I understand. So who is her guardian? Oh. I see."
The nurses eyes found Luke. She was in disbelief. I had to look down at the floor because I was afraid I'd start laughing and give us up.
"Alright. Have a nice trip Mrs. wright!"
With that, she hung up.
"So Mr. Hemmings, it seems that you were not lying," she looked up at him before continuing to write her note, "so both you and Makayla are going to be released home,"
We nodded, feeling relieved that it actually worked.
She dismissed us, letting us leave to go to our lockers. I sped up ahead of Luke a it, wanting to just grab my things and leave as fast as we could. He laughed at my eagerness. I rounded the corner, immediately stopping in my tracks when I saw two people emerging from the storage closet. It was Amber and another boy who I recognized to be the captain of the baseball team, Patrick.
I turned on my heel to prevent Luke from seeing. He still hadn't turned the corner then. I mean, sure we didn't get along 97% of the time, but that was his girlfriend and no one deserves to be cheated on. I would rather just tell him it happened, rather that have him actually see it and it's aftermath which was very messy hair and uniforms.
I turned and walked right back into him.
"Do you ever watch where you're going?" He bit teasingly.
I laughed nervously, "I don't need to go to my locker anymore,"
"Why not?" He shrugged looking back up.
Obviously he had a clear view over me. He was almost a whole foot talked than me.
To my surprise, he didn't look too shocked. I turned and spotted them again. They both saw us standing there. It was kinda awkward, no one said anything. We just stared at eachother. Amber looked pleased however, she had probably been planning for Luke to find her playing around with another guy to get him angry.
"We should go," I poked his side.
He nodded, looking away, "c'mon, let's go,"
We got to the car and he hadn't said a word.
"I'm sorry you had to see that," I cringed.
He snorted laughter, "I always figured she did anyway. Besides, we broke up yesterday,"
"Oh," I sighed in relief, "I thought you'd be like really mad or something,"
"Nah," he shook his head.
