The Babysitter
"I'm not living with him for 2 weeks!"
Makayla's POV
I went straight to my locker, sticking in the combination and starting to get my things. My best friend, Audrey, went to her locker, which was right next to mine.
"Hey there, my cinnamon apple," she grinned playfully.
I snorted laughter, "you're my cinnamon apple too,"
"What class do you have first?" She asked
"AP Calc," I told her.
"Oh, the smart people class," she muttered.
"Shut up," I huffed, "it's not like I enjoy that class, they placed me there with all seniors and I don't talk to anyone in there besides Annie and Mrs. Muth."
"Have fun," she snorted, "I'm off to theology,"
I groaned, "lucky,"
She giggled and went off her own way. I went down to the end of the hallway where Mrs. Muth's classroom was situated. She was the Calc teacher, and my lacrosse coach. We were pretty close because she had been my coach for the past 3 years, so I didn't mind going to talk to her about anything.
"What's up?" She asked, looking up at me from her pretty pink desk, complete with fluffy pens and glittery frames of pictures.
"Nothing," I shrugged, "I'm just bored and super early,"
She smiled, "at least you aren't late,"
I nodded, "that's good I guess,"
I sat down at the seat closest to hers and laid my head on my own. She sat back in her chair, twirling a little. I spotted a glittery frame with a picture of her and a boy. They must have been going to prom because she had a pretty purple dress on.
"Aw you look so cute," I complimented.
She giggled, "that's my husband."
I gawked, "you went to prom together?"
She nodded her head, "yeah. We dated in highschool and everything,"
I smiled, "that's so cool. I wish that would happen to me, but no one likes me like that,"
"Oh don't be silly, Mickey," she patted my hand, "I'm sure you'll find someone,"
We continued to talk, the conversation becoming mostly lacrosse related as to our strategy to win the championship this year. We did so until the bell rang. The rest of the class flooded in, either late or just in the nick of time. They were seniors afterall, and you know how they get.
I was in the back corner, trying to keep to myself, but of course everyone wants to sit in the back. Maybe I should have sat closer to the front, but then I would be seen as that overly eager kid. Either way was a lose. Well actually, maybe today was my lucky day. Annie, a senior who was on my lacrosse team too, came and sat next to me.
"Good morning Mick," she smiled tiredly.
I grinned, "sup Annie,"
Class started and I was doing my very best to pay attention. After all, I did not want to get behind in this class. That would be signing my death certificate.
"You're late to class again, Luke and Amber." Mrs Muth sighed as she took their green passes.
Luke mumbled an incomprehensible response. His girlfriend, Amber, didn't say a word to Mrs Muth and they both took their seats. If there is someone in this room that I don't like, it's definitely Luke Hemmings. His girlfriend comes in a close second, because boy, does she hate me.
I don't think I've actually really done anything bad to her. I think she was suspicious that I like Luke. I honestly don't. The only times I've talked to him were when his family came over my house for dinner to talk about work. Our dad's co-owned a website building company, so seeing his mother and father at my house was nothing new.
He just annoyed me. He was always late for school, he someone managed to float through his classes despite this, and he was just an arrogant asshole overall. All the girls in the school practically crawled at his feet- when they weren't crawling at his friends feet, of course. Most of the time I'd known him, he just jumped around a lot with other girls. But praise The Lord, he's been with Amber almost a month now.
I don't know how she did it. I'm pretty sure that he was still an asshole to her as well. But after all, she had been drooling over him since the first day he walked through those school doors and she wasn't going to let some other girl get him now. Whatever. None of this concerns me.
A half hour later, the bell rang and I was free from arguably the worst class I had on my schedule. The rest of the day I could rest easy.
"Is your dad going away on another trip?" Audrey asked
I nodded, "yeah,"
"Do you want to stay over mine?" She offered.
I pondered the thought for a moment before shaking my head, "nah, I'll be fine. I don't mind being by myself,"
She nodded, "okay, feel free to come over if you want though. My parents love you,"
"Everyone loves me," I said sarcastically.
She laughed and rolled her eyes, "I'm gonna head home. See ya later,"
"Bye," I waved.
I decided that I didn't feel like hanging around any longer after school. All that happened was arguments between the freshmen. I don't remember being that obnoxious when I was a freshman, but then again, I was a freshman. You don't realize how awkward and weird you are then until it's too late.
So, I left and started to walk home. I wasn't even halfway there when I could feel myself starting to sweat. It's always so damned hot here. Then again, my stupid school uniform- a white button down, plaid skirt, knee socks, and sweater- weren't really helping. I rolled my skirt another roll, sighing as the windy breeze hugged my freshly exposed legs.
My parents were actually home today, which was unusual. You see, my dad and Luke's dad were the ones who actually owned the business, but our mothers were heavily involved as well. They helped coordinate the business trips, packs their suits and what not, and do all that motherly stuff. Then, they would go along too, which wasn't exactly necessary- but hey, any sort of trip to another country was bound to be fun.
Don't get me wrong, I love my parents. They've always been good to me. I have everything I need and more. However, I couldn't really find it in myself to care when they left. I was so used to it by now that whether they were home or not didn't bother me. Sometimes, I would wake up and they would already be gone, leaving little but a note to suffice as notice.
"Hello?" I called into the hallow entryway.
"Hi dear," my mom called back, "I'm in the kitchen,"
I entered to see my mom standing at the island in her nice grey pinstripe business suit. She had a maroon button down tucked into her neat pencil skirt, and little inch heels with pointy toes.
"Hi mum," I smiled as I dropped my bag to the floor and kicked my sperrys off.
"How was school?" She asked
"It was good," I smiled, "are you all packed for...."
"England," she filled in, "and yes, I have your father and I's things all ready to go,"
I nodded, "sounds like fun,"
"I know, I've never been to London," she gushed, "there's going to be so much to see,"
I smiled, "I hope you have a good time. When are you leaving?"
"Tomorrow morning," she explained, "oh and the Hemmings are coming over for dinner,"
I huffed, "do I have to stay downstairs? I'd much rather be in my room,"
"I don't see why you and Luke can't get along. He's very handsome Makayla,"
"And he has a girlfriend," I pointed out, "besides, he's really annoying mum,"
She tsked and shook her head, "we'll have to change that,"
I went up to my room and did my homework. I was thankful that I was pretty quick minded, because what took students 2 hours to accomplish usually only took me about 45 minutes. I decided to take my nightly shower early. My mom knocked on the bathroom door and threw some articles of clothing inside so I would have something nice to wear for dinner.
"Make sure you actually do your hair too!" She added as she closed the door.
I groaned. That would make it seem like I was actually trying for him. His ego was big enough, I couldn't afford to supplement it any further. Once my mom tells you to do something, you have to. I could try to get away with just drying my hair, but she would come upstairs and do my hair against my will.
So after I dragged myself out of the bathroom and padded back down the hallway to my room, I did my hair. I curled it, fearing that straightening it like usual would be seen as too minute by my mother. She meant well, she just went about it in a rather annoying way. To be honest, I think she was scared that I'll never have another boyfriend.
I mean I've only had one boyfriend, freshman year for 3 months. After then, I just kinda took time for myself. I was still getting used to school at the time, and boys were of the least importance to me. I was more wrapped up in my lacrosse schedule and grades, and making sure I still spent time with the friends I already had.
I liked to go out to parties, but I liked it because of the music. I didn't go to make new friends or drink. I just went to dance and be surrounded by people. It was weird, but crowds are also something I enjoy. I just like being out where everyone else is. I don't know why I do. Other than that however, I didn't really get out too much.
"Makayla," my mom tapped softly on my door, "the Hemmings are here, come on downstairs,"
I checked the outfit my mother laid out one last time. It was a simple white sundress. She didn't give me shoes, because we'd be inside of course. My hair was down in soft curls. I gave a small smile at my reflection before sighing and opening my door.
I could see Liz and Andy, Luke's parents, at the door. I slowly came down the stairs as Luke entered the house. I had to admit that he always cleaned up well when he came over. Today he had on a simple red plaid shirt and black skinny jeans.
"Hello there Makayla," Liz smiled.
"Hi Mrs. Hemmings," I responded politely.
My mother ushered the 6 of us into the dining room, and we sat down to have a nice meal. Luke and I were sat across from each other, but after our initial glances to acknowledge the others presence, we refused to even look at eachother. It was clearly noticeable to both sets of parents.
"So we've been talking about the trip..." my dad started.
I peeked up at him curiously. My mom wiped her hands on her napkin before placing it back on her lap and looking at me apprehensively. I rose an eyebrow.
"It's going to be much longer of a trip then we are used to," Andy piped in.
My dad nodded, "So we've decided that Luke is going to stay with you while we go away for a business trip."
I dropped my fork onto my plate my eyes wide in utter shock. I immediately looked to my mother, but she was just as serious as my father. Then I looked to Luke who was just as blindsided by the entire situation.
"What?" I spluttered.
"You guys are going to be staying here, together, while we are away," Liz repeated calmly.
All the parents looked at eachother, waiting for the two of us to explode of something. And we did.
"Dad I'm almost 17," I argued.
"Yeah, and I'm 18," Luke added, "we can live on our own!"
"This isn't a matter of your age," Andy sighed, "we just thought it would be nice if you two actually spoke to eachother,"
"I'm not living with him for 2 weeks," I crossed my arms.
"I'm not the issue here!" Luke growled.
"Yes, you are," I shot back.
"Hey hey you two," my dad warned, "knock it off,"
"And you two were just saying how you could live on your own," Liz snorted.
We both rolled our eyes and sat back in the dining room chairs. I glared at him, causing him to scoff.
"This could be good," my mother shrugged, "maybe you two will finally get along,"
I went straight to my locker, sticking in the combination and starting to get my things. My best friend, Audrey, went to her locker, which was right next to mine.
"Hey there, my cinnamon apple," she grinned playfully.
