Once In a Lifetime

I've been home for three days now. Mom and I have done most of the stuff on her list, but I haven't even had a moment to myself. I guess I cant blame her for wanting to spend all this time with me since she hasn't properly seen me in four years.

Thankfully though, she's at the store buying groceries at the moment, so I have some time to myself. I feel like I haven't been able to look through any of my old stuff that I left here, and I'm not too sure if its a good idea for me to, but I cant help my curiosity.

I quickly find the box I hid under my bed the night I found out I was leaving for Chicago to live with dad. As soon as I open it, I remember putting the contents inside as I wiped my tear-stained cheeks. I can feel my heartbeat quicken as my delicate fingertips run across the items in the box. The box full of our memories together.

I slowly pull out the little brown bear he had given me years ago on our third date when we were sixteen. I cant help but smile at the memory. Louis wore a white button down shirt and chinos with his red toms. I wore a dress and we walked around the park. At the end of the date he gave me the teddy bear. He named him lucky, because the bear would get to spend the night with me. He was always so silly that way.

I continue to dig through the box, finding old pictures and letters Louis had written me. I cant bare to read those just yet, it might hurt too much. Suddenly, my hand stumbles upon something strange, when I pull it out, I have a large intake of breath. I completely forgot I had put his promise ring in here. It was just as beautiful to me as it was back then. The golden band shined bright as the little emerald stone glittered in the light of my bedroom.

I gently slide it onto the finger it had rested on years ago. Louis had given it to me the September before I left. I remember him telling me that it was a promise ring. When I asked him what the promise was, he replied that he wanted to promise me that no matter where life took us, it would always be him and me, and that I would always be the love of his life.

The night he gave it to me I was on cloud nine, I sat in bed all night, smiling and staring at the precious symbol on my finger. That was the night I knew for sure how much I truly did love him. But it didn't last, and we couldn't keep that promise.

The thought pulls my attention away from the ring on my hand and toward the box. My blood begins to heat with rage as I throw everything back into the box and toss it all into my closet. However for some reason, I cant help but keep the ring on.

I sit on the floor as my chest heaves in and out from the panic and anger I'm feeling when suddenly I hear the front door downstars open.

"Kara, sweetheart? Are you still home?" She calls from the first floor of our little house.

"Yeah, I'll be down in a minute mom." I yell back. I quickly pull myself together so she doesn't notice something is bothering me.

The ending was abrupt, I'm sorry about that. But Im going to post again very soon to make up for it. I'm trying to build up the anticipation for you guys, so in a few more chapters things will really start going places! I'm really excited and I hope all of you are too! Thanks for reading!
