And Then There Were Four

"So they are mine?" You asked the lady in front of you.
“For now. They will be returned to family when they have provided the proper evidence that they can care for them.” The words belonged to a Middle Aged woman in a dark grey suit. You couldn’t believe this. Only 4 days ago you were on the phone to your best friend, now you find out she passed away in a terrible fire that also took the life of her neighbour.
Luckily her two boys survived. Leo who was 3 years old and her 4 month old Elijah. No one had told you when it happened. It wasn’t until now when the two shivering boys were in front of you that you were confronted with the news. How had this been kept from you?
“Why didn’t you tell me?” You asked glaring at your manager.
“Because it isn’t a good look. You being left with an older woman’s children. It’s not what your image needs.” She retorted.
“Well you know what my image doesn’t need? A bitch like you! You’re fired!! I’m taking the boys, where do I sign?” You asked turning to the lady. She handed you a form and you quickly signed it.
“Where is their stuff?” You asked her.
“They have nothing. Everything was destroyed in the fire.”
“So you brought them from Australia to the UK without a jacket? What the fuck!! They are freezing!” You almost yell holding the baby close and rubbing the shoulder of his brother.
“Not my responsibility.” She shrugged walking to her car.
Rather than argue you hurried the boys inside to the warmth of your boyfriends dressing room.
You had no idea how to tell Niall. You had no idea how he would react. You were just a 20 year old actress, He himself was a 20 year old musician in the worlds biggest boy band. He never even got to meet Rachel and now you were the guardian of her two boys.
“Are you warmer now Leo?” You asked the little boy with thick blonde curly hair.
“I’m hungry.” He replied with his squeaky little voice.
“Don’t worry, I’ll get you something. When did you last eat?”
“Before we got on the plane.” He replied.
Your heart stopped. That meant he hadn’t eaten in over 24 hours, you doubted that the woman had fed the baby either. You finally reached the dressing room where you were greeted by Lou, the bands hair and makeup artist.
“Who are these two little ones?” She asked rubbing Elijah’s arm.
“This mop of curls is Leo and the chubba bubba is Elijah.”
You introduce as tears start streaming down your face.
“Tom!” She called out. Tom poked his head around the corner and she asked him to take the two boys to play with their daughter Lux. He took Leo’s hand and put Elijah on his hip leaving you alone with Lou. She took your hand and lead you into the room where she sat you down on the lounge before pulling you into a hug.
“What’s wrong babe? Who were those boys?” You pulled away from the hug wiping your eyes and trying to steady your breathing.
“You remember my friend Rach?” You asked in between deep breaths.
“Yeah? She’s your old neighbour right? Are those her two boys?” Lou’s face was full of worry as she knew you were not one to cry.
“There was an accident. There was fire and she didn’t make it. A guy got the boys out of the house, but he ended up caught inside with her. They didn’t make it. She’s gone. She’s gone Lou and I’m left with her two boys until a relative can prove they are able to care for them. I don’t know what to do! I’m so scared! I don’t know what to do!” Your body began heaving with each heavy sob. The pain of losing your childhood friend was taking over. Rachel was your idol growing up. She was a few tears older than you and was the coolest person you’d ever met. Now she was gone.
Lou stroked your hair and cried with you. She felt your pain and was going to do everything in her power to help you.
“Okay! We need a plan! Make a list of things we need to do!” She said cleaning away her own tears.
“I need to tell Niall.” You hoarsely replied.
“That’s not important those two little boys are. So what do we need to do?”
“They haven’t been fed in over 24 hours. The stupid woman that brought them over here didn’t feed them or bring them any clothes.”
“Okay!” She said jumping up and heading to her handbag. She pulled out a bag of carrot sticks and a bottle of formula.
“Carrots for Leo and one of Lux’s bottle for Elijah. It’s not much but for now until we go shopping that’s enough. Ill text Tom and tell him to bring the boys and Lux here.” She explained as she handed you the food before pulling out her phone. As her fingers clicked away on the screen you tried to think of how to tell Niall. He was in an interview at the moment and judging by the time he will still be doing that for another 20 minutes. Today was the last how of the boys TMH tour so the day was to be full of interviews before they performed their last show in London. The door was opened and Leo walked in holding Lux’s hand, with Tom in pursuit with Elijah in his arms. Elijah was handed to you as Leo sat to your right. You handed him the carrot sticks and he munched away. You put the bottle in front of Elijah and he grabbed it anxiously. You watched as Lou told Tom about the situation, she handed him her card and he left in a hurry. Lou walked over to you, picking up lux as she went.
“Toms going to get the boys some jackets. Once you tell Niall we are going to go shopping and get everything they need. And by the sound of things, I’d say the interview has finished early.”
The doorknob rattled and 5 handsome men walked in…
