I Strangely Can't Understand

Have you ever been in love?

Harry's POV

The tour was finally over! I was exhausted and in serious need of sleep, even though I slept the entire flight back to London. The guys were all going back to their places in the same car, but Ed picked me up because I had to go to his mother's birthday party with him.

I met his mother a few times before that; she was such a loving and sweet lady, I wouldn't have missed her birthday for anything.

I stepped out of the airport with the lads and our bodyguards; girls were screaming everywhere and paps were taking photos non stop.

"There's the car," Louis sighed as he pointed to the car him and the rest of the guys were leaving with.

"I'll see you guys later," I waved at them as they walked to their car.

They nodded and muttered a few 'bye''s.

I spotted Ed a few cars down from the lad's and made my way over with a smirk.

"Harold," Ed nodded once I reached the car.

I pulled him in for a hug and smiled.

It was nice to be back home, I missed everyone and everything around here.

"Do you need to take a nap or something? Because you can do that in the car when we drive to my parents' house, we have to pack now," he informed me as he opened the drivers door and slipped into the car.

I loaded my bag into the trunk, thankful that the rest of my bags were taken care of by the bodyguards. I jogged to the passenger seat as Ed started the car and jumped into my seat.

"So how was it?" Ed asked as I closed my door.

The car slowly started moving and soon, we left the parking of the airport.

"Good, I'm just exhausted. And jet lag I don't have time for right now," I sighed as I rolled down the window.

"I know what you mean," he chuckled.

"So what's the plan?" I asked him as he turned on the radio.

"Well we leave in a few hours, I just need to finish up packing, we'll be there before 8," he informed me.

"So 4 hours from now?" I sighed.

I hoped I could get some sleep in on our way there.

"Yeah. I can't wait to see Mia," he smiled to himself.

In the time that we had been friends, I have never met his sister. He talked about her a lot and she sounded like an amazing person. I had also seen a few photos of her and she looked like a beaut. She had Ed's hair, just a little darker, and his eyes too, but her eyes had a bit more green in them. I was actually excited to meet his sister, every time I went somewhere with Ed where she was supposed to be, she never showed up.

"I bet," I chuckled at Ed.

"I know I say this every time you are supposed to meet her, but please, don't be a flirt," he eyed me.

"Eyes on the road," I chuckled.

Ed was always scared that I would make his sister fall for me and end up breaking her heart, but that wasn't what I had planned at all. I might have always had a flirty and charming personality on me, but I just wanted to be friends.

"I won't Ed," I tried to comfort him with my words.

He nodded and parked in front of his house.

"There's beers in the fridge," he told me as he got out of the car.

'Thank God' I thought. I really needed a beer.

I got out of the car and joined him in his house.

As soon as I entered his house, I went to fetch myself a beer from the fridge.

"I'm done, if we leave now we might be there earlier by 2 hours," Ed spoke as he came into the kitchen.

I took a sip from the beer and wiped my mouth. "Can I still sleep in the car?" I questioned with an eyebrow cocked.

He chuckled and took my beer from my hand; drinking some himself.

I walked over to Ed's bags next to the door and picked two of them up, seeing that he had 4.

Ed always packed more than he needed. We were going to his parent's house for 3 days, and he took 4-very huge-bags.

Once I had a tight grip on his bags, I walked to the car.

I put the bags on the ground once I reached the car and popped open the trunk.

"Do you have everything? I want to lock up," Ed joined me as I put his bags in the trunk with mine. He handed me his other 2 bags and I loaded them into the trunk too before slamming it shut.

"Yeah, my phones still in the car," I told him as I walked to the passenger seat.

Ed jogged to the front door of his house and locked the door before walking back to the car.

"It looks like it's going to rain," he commented on the weather as he jumped into the car.

"Doesn't it always," I chuckled. "Where's my beer?" I pouted at him.

I needed my beer, I didn't drink on the tour at all, and the first beer I got when I got back to London, Ed probably drank for me.

"Sorry mate, it's inside," Ed started the car and backed out of his driveway.

"You owe me one," I sighed.

"Go to sleep fucker," Ed's laughter rang through the car.

I obeyed his order, and laid my head on the window as he drove. Music started playing and one of Ed's songs came on.

"I'm spending time with you right now Ed, please, I have enough of you with me, turn down your voice," I commented with my eyes closed.

"It calms me," he quietly told me.

After he spoke, I felt bad. I knew he still mourned over his break up with Nina, and I could understand how the songs he wrote about her would calm his thoughts.

"Sorry mate," I sighed as I listened to the words of 'I'm A Mess'.

When 'Don't' started playing, Ed made a comment.

"I don't understand how I made the mistake of letting Nina go," he told me as he turned down his music.

Nina told Ed to choose between his career and her because he went away too much. I felt sorry for the lad, he gave her everything she wanted. But when is everything ever enough?

"Mate, if you stayed with her, how would you have lived without a career?" I asked him.

"I could have written songs for other singers," he shrugged.

"That's not the same if you have a passion for singing," I shook my head.

Ed and I met a few years before that at the VMA awards. Our seats were next to each other and we kind of started talking. A few weeks later I bumped into him at a party Simon had and we exchanged numbers. We stayed in contact ever since, and besides for the lads I have a career with, he's a best friend of mine.

"I would give anything up for Nina," he told me.

"I would never give anything up for a girl," I chuckled.

"You've never found love, Harold," Ed joined my laughter.

"Such a thing doesn't exist," I told Ed. He knew that already, it was my motto in life; Love doesn't exist.

"I can't wait for the day that a girl proves you wrong. Maybe if you stopped looking at girls' body for sex and started looking at their hearts, you'll find falling in love quite amazing," Ed smiled at his own words.

"I'm in no mood for a heartbreak mate," I shook my head. "I'd rather stick with just sex," I told him.

"One day, Harold. One day," he chuckled.

The rest of the car ride was silent, Ed sang along to some of his songs and I stared out of the window. I planned on catching a nap, but I couldn't. My mind was for too busy for that. The conversation I shared with Ed seemed to be on replay in my head. I wanted to find love, I really did, but I didn't want to feel the pain that came with love. Everyone gets hurt, and that wasn't something I was craving to feel at all.

"We're here," Ed shook my shoulder lightly.

I didn't notice that the time flew so fast. I cursed under my breath and opened the door.

Luckily, his mothers party wasn't till the next day. So I had some time to catch up on my much needed sleep.

We grabbed our bags from the trunk and walked to the house.

Ed knocked lightly on the door, and in seconds the door swung open.

"Eddie," his mother smiled as she pulled him in for a hug.

The sight made me sad; I missed my mother too. But I knew that I would have seen her 4 days from then, and the though comforted me.

"Harry," his mother smiled at me after hugging her son.

"Mrs. Sheeran," I smiled at her.

"I've missed you boys," she eyed us.

Ed chuckled and walked into the house, I followed right after him.

"You boys are probably tired, you should get some rest," his mother spoke again. "Your father is asleep already," she looked at Ed.

"God yes," I chuckled.

"Where's Mia?" Ed frowned and stopped in his steps as we walked up to the rooms.

"She's coming tomorrow, she had to stay the night because of work, but she'll be here tomorrow morning bright and early," she clapped her hands in excitement.

I could understand her excitement, with her daughter being a teacher and her son being a singer, she didn't get to see them that much.

"Alright then," Ed muttered. "Well goodnight mum," Ed blew his mother a kiss before walking into the hall of the second floor.

"Goodnight Mrs. Sheeran," I smiled at her.

"Goodnight boys," I heard her say as I walked into the hall too.

"You're taking the room you normally do?" Ed asked as I reached the room I usually slept in when I went to his parents' house with him.

"Did you want to sleep here?" I asked, pointing to the room.

"No," he chuckled. "I'll take my old room," he told me as he walked into his room.

A "Goodnight Harold," was heard from his room with the sound of his door closing soon after.

I sighed once I entered the room I slept in. I left my bags at the door and fell onto the bed, letting my body soak into the softness of the mattress and duvet.

I always liked that room; the walls were painted plain white with black doves flying across one of the walls, ending at the bottom of the wall into a colour splash of bright colours. The bed was made with a plain white duvet, and the pillows were made in light colours of blue, purple and pink. There was a bookshelf in the left of the room that was painted plain white, and the bookshelf was packed with books. A small study table was next to the bookshelf with a laptop on. The laptop always looked untouched; it was always left on the same spot. The floor had plain white tiles and the ceiling was pure black; and if the room was dark and the lights was off; little stars could be seen shining on the ceiling.

I stood up next to the bed and undressed myself; leaving only my boxers on. I jumped back into the bed and turned the lamp on the bedside table off.

As I laid looking at the shiny stars on the ceiling, I thought about meeting Ed's sister. I wanted nothing more than to meet her; for the reason the way Ed spoke about her made her sound like a once in a life time kind of person. She sounded like everything I've never had, something that would make me want to love. But I could never have done that to Ed; like he said; I might break her heart.

I closed my eyes and let sleep take over me, letting my dreams be filled with beautiful images of the ocean.

Notes

"Have you ever been in love? Horrible isn't it? It makes you s vulnerable. It opens your chest and it opens up your heart and it means that someone can get inside you and mess you up. You build up all these defenses, you build up a whole suit or armor, so that nothing can hurt you, then one stupid person, no different from any other stupid person, wanders into your stupid life. You give them a piece of you. They didn't ask for it. They did something dumb one day, like kiss you or smile at you, and then your life isn't your own anymore. Love takes hostages. It gets inside you. It eats you out and leaves you crying in the darkness, so simple a phrase like 'maybe we should be just friends' turns into a glass splinter working its way into your heart, It hurts. Not just in the imagination. Not just in the mind. It's a soul-hurt, a real gets-inside-you-and-rips-you-apart pain. I hate love."
