Good Intentions ⇼ Luke Hemmings

Four.

As I sat at my desk at work, I couldn’t help but let my mind wander to the conversation Maiko and I had last night. It was concerning kids and the time it’d take for he and I to be ready. But now, as I think about it in more depth—and not half asleep—I don’t think I want to have kids with him. If I’m unsure whether I love him, how could I ever carry his child? But my longing for one continues to grow as I spend more time with Kaylee, Ashton, and Josi. I’m jealous of what they have. I’m jealous of the love they harbour—the same love I used to share with Luke.

Romina? Can you come in here, please?” Mr. Jones called from the intercom on the telephone.
“Yes, sir.” I replied, wasting no time and joining him in the cluttered room.
"I'm taking off for the rest of the day to meet a mate at the pub and watch a game. If you could fax some things for me, that'd be great. You can leave once you're done." He busied himself in trying to find the work for me.
"No problem." I smiled, hoping to be out of here before six.
"I made notes on them... If I can find the dammed things." Sighing, he straightened. "Go ahead and get back to work, I'll drop them by when I leave." It was clear that he was agitated with his knack to lose important documents.

As I was about to leave, there was a knock of Mr. Jones' office door. He and I both looked toward it to see a painfully familiar man.
"There he is!" Peter chuckled. "Romina, this is my mate. Luke, my assistant." He hadn't changed a bit, and we were both stunned into silence. My hand shook as I raised it.
"Nice to meet you." A fake smile spread across my lips, playing the part for my boss.
"Likewise?" Luke's confusion was clear.
"I'll-uhm-I'll get back to work..." I mumbled. "And Mr. Jones? Check your laptop bag for the files." I remarked before quickly exiting.

The image of Luke burnt into my mind as I sat at my desk, rubbing my eyes the piercing, the messy hair, lengthy body, bright blue eyes, everything I had dreamt of since he left. I felt like I was going to barf as I made eye contact with Mallory whilst she passed by me to go to the copy room, her eyes widening as she glanced into Peter Jones' office.
"Is that him?" She whispered, all too aware of the millions of times I had described his beauty. A knot in my throat formed, and all I could do was nod, vaguely aware of Mallory's promise to talk later before she left me alone to deal with the papers Mr. Jones just dropped off.

LUKE'S POINT OF VIEW

"'Scuse me, mate." Peter spoke as he gathered a stack of papers, exiting the room. He and I had been pretty good mates since I moved into the flat next to him. Our friendship seemed to be unlikely, as he is a hotshot CEO and I have a piercing and work on cars for a living. I peered out the small window as I slowly grabbed the iPhone set on Peter's desk, quickly scrolling through the contacts and copying Romy's number into my phone, setting Peter's down and nonchalantly walking away just in time for Peter to come back in. "Ready to go." He grinned, grabbing his coat, and we set off to the pub to watch the game together.

ROMINA'S POINT OF VIEW

I came home to an empty house, as usual. The floor was cold as I slipped my feet out of my painful heels and made my way to the bedroom to make positive that Maiko wasn't home. Sighing, I threw my work bag on the bed and dialed his number as I changed out of my dress and into comfy clothes.

"Yeah?" He answered. The background was loud and I could tell he was shouting.
"Where are you?" I asked quietly, knowing fairly well what his response would be.
"At the pub with the mates." He slurred, causing me to bite my lip as I played with the hem of my sweater.
"Are you coming home for dinner?" I sighed. It wasn't rare that Maiko would go to the pub after work, and it especially wasn't rare when he came home drunk.
"I'll be home later." He curtly responded, hanging up. Rolling my eyes, I tossed my phone on the bed and made my way to the kitchen, beginning to cook dinner with a glass of wine.

***

Maiko teetered in our flat as I finished dinner, plopping himself down at the table with a somber look.
"Hey." He muttered while I set our plates and joined him at the table, not speaking.
"You smell like perfume and cigarettes." I noted, leaving out the reeking of booze, as it was a given.
"I only had one," he grumbled on about the cigarette stench. "It was a hard day." He made excuses did himself.

"And the perfume?" I demanded. "Why do you smell like perfume that's not mine?" I attempted to keep my cool with his short responses.
"Ran into an old friend." He dismissed.
"What did you fuck her?!" I angrily stood up, taking my plate and throwing the remainder of it away before starting on the dishes. "I'm just saying there is no reason you should smell like her." I pressed against his silence.

"She gave me a lap dance." Maiko teased, obviously lying. I heard the lighter click and turned to see him with a cigarette in his mouth, taking the first drag.
"Don't smoke in my house!" I demanded, walking over and yanking the fag from his mouth and smashing it out on his dinner plate.
"Stop it, Romina!" He yelled, standing up as he grabbed my arm. I roughly pulled away from him, glaring at him.

"Are you fucking someone else?!" I yelled.
"I don't have time for this!" He screamed back, storming toward the door. He pulled it open and grabbed his coat. "You should fucking know!" He yelled. "I don't know what's so hard to understand about the fact that I love you," he grumbled. "You should fucking know." With that, he slammed the door and left me alone. After finishing the dishes, I climbed in bed and began to cry. Just as my eyes were about to shut, I got a text. I had expected it to be Maiko but was not-so-pleasantly-surprised when I read it.
