Good Intentions ⇼ Luke Hemmings

Fourteen.

It’s Saturday morning, and I’m off work. Today is the day I told Maiko he had to be out of the flat, and when Kaylee, Josi, and I were heading out of the building, we saw that he was packing all his things in his car. The three of us had originally planned on going to lunch. But since we had one awkward run-in with Maiko and didn’t want another, we decided going to the mall for the rest of the day was a better idea. So, we’re sat at a small restaurant in the mall, having for our lunch, making small talk, and waiting for Steph and Ella(because we invited them to catch up). As we were waiting, I watched Kaylee assist Josi in cutting up her chicken—I couldn’t help but sigh.

“I don’t know how you do it.” I confessed.
“Do what, Rom?”
“You’re so grown up.” I laughed, somewhat embarrassed. Kaylee cocked her head, pushing her long brown hair out of her face. “I don’t know, I think about school sometimes, and how immature we all were… And now you’re here with a kid and you seem like you’ve got everything figured out now and it’s just weird, I don’t know… You’re just such an adult now!” Kaylee laughed as I blushed, feeling like I said something dumb.
“You’re a grown up, too.” Kaylee smiled. “Maybe more than me. I mean, I have a kid, yeah… But I’ve never had a job or a flat to myself, I never went to college. You did, hell you’ve got a great job and they need you there.” Her face softened. “A lot of people need you to do things for them. The only people that need me are Josi and occasionally Ash.” She shrugged, forcing a smile. “You’re way more of an adult than I am.” I scoffed, shaking my head.
“I am, by no means an adult! The most adult thing I’ve ever done is buy vegetables.” I argued lightly. “I’m wearing underwear with aliens on them, I am not an adult!” We shared a quick laugh before our conversation was interrupted by our friends joining our table.

“Hi.” I smiled at the girls I’ve missed. As usual, the attention was on Josi for a while, until Steph and Ella turned to me.
“So, Romy… How are things with you and-” Kaylee cut them off.
“Maiko and Romy broke up.” She informed them, speaking for me as always.
“What happened?” Ella inquired.
“He cheated on me.” I shrugged. The two gasped.
“Oh my god!” Steph raised her eyebrows.
“He didn’t seem the type.” Ella agreed.
“I kind of deserved it.” I rubbed the back of my neck, my gaze switching from Ella and Steph to Josi than locking on Kaylee for reassurance. She gave me a small smile, as if telling me it would be fine if I told my other two best friends.

“What do you mean?” Ella asked slowly, unsure whether it was alright to ask.
“Well, I-” I found it impossible to string the words together to tell them what happened. How could I? How could I tell the other two that Luke and I had sex? Or that we work together now? Or how I can’t stop fucking thinking about where everything went wrong? How could I tell them that I just might go back to him? I couldn’t tell them all of that, I just couldn’t. “I work with Luke now.” I kept the information to a minimum, leaving out what we did on Christmas. “And Maiko didn’t like that, we had a fight, we broke up, he cheated on me.” I shrugged for what felt like the hundredth time. Kaylee gave me a look of desperation, like she was praying for me tell them, but I kept quiet as Ella went on and on about her upcoming wedding. I listened with a smile and pretended not to notice that Luke texted me during our lunch plans.

As the girls and I walked around the mall, I held Josi’s hand, briefly glancing at my phone to see the text I’d forgotten about.
Text message from: Luke Hemmings.
Dinner tonight??? I can pick you up at six. :)

Although every being in my body said it wasn’t a good idea, I couldn’t help but text him back.

When we finally finished at the mall, the girls decided to meet back at Kaylee’s and get drunk, but I opted out.
“Alright, so Romy are you coming up?” Ella asked, taking me by surprise when she referred to me by my old nickname. She’d already done it a million times today, but it still got caught in my throat.
“Uhm…” I checked the time on my phone. “You know what? I’ll join you in a few hours. I promised Mallory from work I’d have dinner with her tonight.” None of them saw through my lies as I pressed my floor level on the lift, hugging them all before going to my flat for the first time in a while.

“Hey.” I mumbled as I walked awkwardly into Luke’s flat. “How are you?” He shrugged, looking lost in his own kitchen. “Need help?” I laughed, he nodded and we went to work in his cramped kitchen. I washed my hands hand helped him season the chicken, laughing when he tried to mash the potatoes he’d bought and failed miserably. “You do the chicken.” I laughed, taking the masher from him and going to work. It was nice to be making dinner with him, as Maiko had always expected me to do the work. I couldn’t help but feel Luke’s eyes glued to me as I mashed. “What?” I asked with a small laugh.
“N-Nothing.” He stuttered, peeling his eyes away before putting the chicken in the oven.
“What?” I repeated, stopping what I was doing.
“You just…” A small smile formed on his lips when I continued, he put the corn in the microwave. Then, he walked over to me, standing behind me and setting his hand on my arm. The simple touch was enough to make me stop again. “I don’t know how you make mashing potatoes look so fucking hot… But you do.” His voice was low and quiet as my breath hitched in my throat.

“W-What?” I stammered, turning around in hopes to maneuver away from him. Instead, he grabbed my waist, staring down at me.
“Romy…” His voice trailed off as he leaned down to press his lips against mine. Everything seemed to move so slowly, and I felt his minty breath on my face when I closed my eyes and planned to kiss him back. But when I puckered my lips, he began talking. “I’ll get the wine.” He mumbled, all too quickly pulling away from me, leaving me confused and somewhat breathless. The rest of dinner preparation was awkwardly silent, and we sat at his small table to eat—filling the silence with small talk.

“What’s your ex-boyfriend’s last name?” He asked, just after we’d finished speaking of work.
“Lawrence… Why?”
“What does he do?” He disregarded my question.
“He’s a journalist…” My voice trailed off.
“I saw an article by him.” Luke mentioned, leaning forward as he sipped his wine. “Handling breakups.” Luke smirked, setting the glass down. My eyes fell on our meal, as I had no idea what to say. I merely shrugged. “It was quite humorous, actually.” He teased. “It was in the advice column.” He snorted a laugh as he picked his newspaper up, which only pissed me off and caused me to cross my arms. “When you’re the one who fucks up—and you fuck up really bad—sometimes it’s just better to leave them be. When it’s over, don’t water a dead flower.” Luke read from the paper, tossing it to the side afterwards. My throat felt dry, so I downed the rest of my wine.

“He doesn’t know what we did.” I confessed. “I never told him.” I hoped that’d stop him from being such a prick towards me. Luke smirked, cocking his head and I wasn’t sure whether I wanted to kiss that smirk away… Or slap it.
“And what did we do?” He leaned back, dragging a hand across his jaw line.
“When we had sex?” It came out as more of a question.
“What?” Luke laughed. “What are you talking about?”
“Christmas.” I reassured. “When we…” My voice trailed off and I stopped speaking.
“I don’t remember.” He shook his head.
“Okay, you can’t just pretend it didn’t happen? That won’t make it go away?” I was utterly confused. He crossed his arms.
“I’m not pretending.” He smirked. “It never happened.” A moment flashed before me where I considered that maybe it didn’t happen—No! It did! It fucking did! He can’t just pretend it didn’t!
“I need to go.” I spoke with a rushed tone as I grabbed my bag and stood up, heading to the door.

“Wait!” He chuckled. “Why are you leaving?”
“Because you can’t do that, Luke! You can’t act like I’m fucking crazy. I know that you know what I’m talking about, and don’t you dare pretend you don’t!” I placed my hand on the door knob.
“I’m not pretending!” He defended himself, but I could tell he was lying. “I really don’t know-” I cut him off.
“Fuck you, Luke!” I cursed, swinging the door open and leaving his flat with a slam, before driving home and going to Kaylee’s, getting completely hammered with the girls, and the only thing that was really on my mind was, well… What the fuck just happened?
