The Beast At Midnight

.04

Eva's POV

Two more weeks came and went with the same events. The rain fell to the earth every morning, forcing me to take a ride to school with my mother. Violet distracted me everyday with her talk about the latest gossip in school which I didn't care about at all. Classes dragged on as usual, in the four classes I had with Harry, gym included, the same thing happened; he'd walk up to our table with his eyes locked on mine, but just before he reached our table he'd look away. Still, there had been no words exchanged between us. He kept to himself a lot. The only time I saw him speaking-yes, saw, because he has never spoken to me or in front of me-was when he spoke to Zayn or Zayn's girlfriend and that only happened at break. The same thing happened after school each day too; my mother came to pick me up due to the heavy rain fall. Once I got home, I'd do homework and just lay in bed, thinking. I'd finally drift off to sleep, but every night at exactly 12AM, I'd hear a wolf. Every night at 12, I awoke to go out to my balcony to listen. I'd search the beast, but I wouldn't find it. It's howls sounded urgent, hurt and there was a hint of anger in them. It was different from normal howls, very different, but yet more beautiful than any sound I've ever heard. After the howling stopped, I'd go back to my room to continue my dreams about the howling beast.

But exactly two weeks after the howling started, some things begun to change. I awoke to birds chirping and pancakes filling my nostrils. I took in the smell and groaned as I stepped out of my bed. After doing a dramatic stretch, I eyed my alarm clock. It read 9:14AM. I surely slept in. But I felt exhausted for those two weeks, not that anything made me tired. I just couldn't get enough sleep. Sun was shining into my room from my balcony, a sight that made me happy. Simply because it meant that I had time to visit the forest that day. And I felt like thanking mama nature for the sun. I lazily dragged my body to the kitchen and found my mother cooking pancakes.

"Morning mom," I yawned as I pulled a chair open for myself.

She turned around and gave me a small smile before continuing her pancakes. "What's your plans for the day?" She asked me with her back turned to me.

A light warm breeze blew into the house from the open window in the kitchen and I welcomed the wind on my skin.

"Going for a walk later," I told her. My mother never liked me going to the forest, but she couldn't keep me from it so after a few months she gave up.

My mother nodded at me and handed me a plate of pancakes. I thanked her and walked back to my room with the plate in my hands. I set the plate on my bed and took a bite of the pancake, hmm'ing to the taste of the blueberry pancakes. I undressed myself as I chewed on my breakfast. After leaving myself only in my underwear, I plugged my iPone into my iHome and searched a song. I decided on Tenth Avenue North's 'Forgive Me' and continued my dressing as I listened to the words. I've never believed in God, but I liked that song, whenever I listened to it I hoped that whoever was out there, if there was someone, I hoped that they would hear. By the time the song ended, I was done dressing. I stepped into my shoes and walked to my mirror. I brushed through my hair with my fingers a few times and watched as the curls fell loosely around my head. I stumbled to the bathroom and brushed my teeth followed by washing my face. I welcomed the coldness of the water on my face and let my damp face dry on its own. I walked back to my room and took my iPhone in my hand and slipped it into my handbag along with a book before leaving the room. Knowing that every Saturday my mother left for her book club and my father had to work, I walked directly to the front door. I opened the door and almost immediately after stepping outside, heat fell on my body. I locked the house and begun my walk to the forest. Just as I entered the forest, my phone rung. I checked the caller ID and it flashed 'Violet'. I slid my finger across the screen and pressed my phone to my ear as I walked to the waterfall.

"Hey," I breathed into the phone.

"What's your plans today? And don't say a lazy day," she warned.

I frowned at her words. I never felt the need to go out and Violet knew.

"I don't know," I told her.

"Well you're going to a party with me," she squealed.

The waterfall came into view and I bit on my lip before answering Violet. "Violet, I don't know,"

"Oh come on Eva! You've never been to a party. Two hours at least?" She begged.

I rolled my eyes at her and gave in, telling her she should pick me up around 7. She agreed and hung up the phone just before I sat down on the bench. I took out the book I took with me and opened to the page I stopped reading. About twenty pages into the book, I heard movement in the forest. Like I've said before, there are no animals in this town. Besides house pets. I put down my book and stood up, with a desperate hope of the sound being made by the beast. I heard it again and my head shot to the direction it came from, just in time to see a white and light brown wolf running across the small rocks in the river. It disappeared into the forest opposite me, leaving my heart beating rapidly. Not because of fear, because of excitement. I frowned and my phone rung. I ignored it and stood there for a few seconds, watching the forest opposite me for any more movement. There was non, so I walked back to the bench and picked up my bag. I shoved my book back into the bag and took out my phone. My mother left me a text and one missed phone call. I opened the text, not wanting to call her back.

From: Mom
Bringing some people over from the book club, a new lady is bringing her daughter with. Please start some coffee x

I sighed at the text and put my phone away. I looked at the forest opposite me once more before leaving. The sunny clouds changed into heavy grey clouds, making me happy. I loved the sun, but I liked the rainy weather more. In a few minutes, I reached my house. I stepped into the house just in time as a few raindrops hit my face and the ground. I closed the door behind me and walked to the kitchen. After throwing my bag on a kitchen chair I walked to the coffee marker and started on the coffee my mother asked for. I took 10 cups out, not knowing how many people would be coming over, and placed them along with sugar and milk on two trays. The front door could be heard opening and a breeze blew through the kitchen. Female voices filled the house and my mother stepped into the kitchen with a lady I didn't recognize.

"Darling," my mother smiled at me. "This is Mrs. Edwards," my mother pointed to the lady next to her.

I gave her a smile and held my hand out for her. "Eva," I told her with a smile.

She pulled me in for a hug, ignoring my hand and smiled at me warmly. "My daughter is here too, we're new in town. It would be nice for her to meet some teenagers around here," she chuckled as she rubbed my arms with her hands.

I gave her another smile and poured the coffee into the cups. My mother helped me carry one of the trays to the living room where the rest of the guests were. The one guest I recognized, almost made me drop the tray I was carrying. Her eyes scanned my body a few times before her eyes met mine. A small smile looked forced upon her lips as I placed the tray on the coffee table next to the one my mother had put down.

"Eva, come here darling," Mrs. Edwards motioned for me to walk closer to the sofa she sat on next to the girl I've seen with Zayn and Harry. "This is my daughter, Perrie," she introduced me to her.

A gulp formed in my throat and I blinked a few times before smiling at her. "I'm Eva," I introduced myself.

She gave me another forced smile before I greeted the rest of the guests and walked to an open sofa. The conversation between the ladies dragged on for a few minutes and Perrie was glued to her phone the whole time, smiling every now and then before Mrs. Edwards and my mother started talking about something that caught my attention.

"So we moved here about three weeks ago," Mrs. Edwards spoke to my mother.

"It must be hard moving to a new town when you don't know anyone, especially for you Perrie," my mother spoke as she turned her attention to Perrie.

Perrie smiled warmly at my mother before continuing on her phone.

"Not that much for Perrie," Mrs. Edwards spoke.

I frowned at her words, thinking about Zayn and Harry, and Perrie's head shot up. Her eyes widened as she looked at her mother in caution. Only then did I notice her unique eye colour. Her eyes were a light blue, but something about the colour fascinated me. It was different than an ordinary blue. Perrie looked back at me with the same expression and cleared her throat.

"Perrie's boyfriend and cousin moved with us," Mrs. Edwards smiled at my mother.

Perrie stood up from the sofa she sat on with a worried look and excused herself before walking outside. I frowned at her behavior but turned my attention back to my mother and Mrs. Edwards' conversation.

"You must know them darling, they attend the high school here, Zayn and Harry." she smiled at me before taking a sip from her coffee.

"I have some classes with them," I told her honestly. I excuses myself too and walked up to my room. As I entered my room I walked directly to my balcony and leaned on the railing with a sigh. My eyes drifted down to the front of our house and I saw Perrie talking to someone. I couldn't make out the person because he/she wore a black hoodie, but after I stood there watching their what looked like an argument for a minute or two, they both looked up to me at the same time and I identified the stranger as Zayn. Perrie looked down and shook her head but Zayn kept his gaze, making me feel uncomfortable. I slowly started moving backwards and fell on my bed with a 'thud'. I just laid there, replaying the events of the past few weeks. School started; the usual happened, until a mysterious guy joined some of my classes and he refused to speak to me for some reason. I thought that maybe he was shy, but that didn't seem like the right answer to his behavior. The same mysterious guy was found at the forest, and I found out that they were new in town, which made me wonder how he possibly knew about the forest. Then, the beautiful sound that could be heard at midnight. The sound fascinated me so much. And that specific day, I caught a glimpse of what I thought was the beast that made the howling at midnight. The thoughts haunted me until my phone's ringing distracted me. I reached for my phone and accepted the call when I saw Violet's name.

"Babe, I can't make it anymore, I have to join my mother for a movie night," she groaned into the phone.

I mentally did a happy dance and muttered an "alright," to Violet. We said our goodbye's and I laid back onto my bed. I decided to push my over-thinking aside for the time being and catch some sleep, seeing that I did feel exhausted once again. I pulled the covers over me, not bothering to change into comfortable clothes, and soon enough slumber took over me.

Howling ringed through my room, distracting the howling in my dream. I fluttered my eyes open slowly and rushed to my balcony once I heard the howling again. I stood in awe as I listened to the single howls releasing. The howling stopped for a few long seconds, then started again, something that didn't happen before that night. As I stood in awe, listening to the howls, I could almost swore I heard another two howls joining in. My eyes widened as I watched the opening of the street in front of me but too soon, the howling ended. I dragged my body back to bed and laid there, looking at the ceiling.

Was there really two more beasts?
