The Beast At Midnight

.08

Eva's POV

Out of the four people present in the room, Harry and I were the only ones who managed to keep our sobriety. I didn't feel like waking up with a hangover Saturday morning, so I refrained from drinking the rum. Why did Harry decide to do the same thing as well? I couldn't come up with any other explanation except for that he was Zayn's designated driver for the night.

"This game is so boring," Perrie complained. "Do you guys just want to watch a movie or something?" she asked us after folding her hand.
"Yeah, I'm done playing cards for the day," Zayn agreed, setting his deck on the table.

"I'm fine with whatever everyone else wants to do." I shrugged as I clasped my hands together in my lap.

Soon everyone began to clear out from the basement, and we all made our way into the living room. Perrie claimed that she was going upstairs to her room to find a few movies for us to watch but, when Zayn followed in her footsteps, I just figured they wanted a few minutes to themselves. Harry and I sat at opposite ends of the couch, focusing on anything but each other.

I cleared my throat with a cough and scratched the bridge of my nose with a finger. I didn't realize that this gesture had disturbed Harry out of his thoughts until I looked up and saw vibrant green eyes observing me intently.

They were an olive green with dashes of yellow speckled around the irises--two captivating pools of emerald one could get lost staring into like I was now. And, for some reason, his eyes looked like they had experienced a lifetime of pain which made my own heart ache.

"S-Sorry, I didn't mean to be so loud. I have bad allergies," I stammered out as it was the only good lie I could come up with on the spot.

What appeared to be a faint smirk crossed his incredibly full and plump lips while he shook his head. "It's fine. I was distracted by something else anyway," His husky voice rasped in a whisper.

Before I got the chance to bring myself to ask him what, Perrie and Zayn came rushing down the stairs in a frenzy. Their laughter echoed throughout the room as Perrie thrashed in her boyfriend's arms while clutching a few dvds.

"Zayn, stop!" Perrie shrieked as she tried to prevent his hands from tickling her sides.

"Alright, alright." The Bradford boy surrendered with his hands up, a playful smile in tact while he sat down in the space between me and Harry on the couch.

"Okay guys. Our movie options are...Forrest Gump, The Great Gatsby, and Carrie, the twenty first century version. What's it going to be?" she asked everyone.

"I vote for The Great Gatsby," I said to Perrie with a smile on my face.

I've always adored Fitzgerald's writing style and his impeccable ability to tell a story.

"That's one for Gatsby. Anymore takers?" Perrie inquired again.

"Eh, I really want to see Carrie. Stephen King is a legend," Zayn decided, looking to his friend for support.

"Yeah, me too." Harry nodded his head.

"Sorry, love. It looks like Carrie wins. We can watch The Great Gatsby when the boys leave," Perrie promised me before putting the disc inside of the dvd player.

I muttered a low 'okay' and readjusted the position of my body on the couch. Stephen King had his fair share of entertaining books, but I was never really a big fan of the blockbusters based off of his stories--with the exception of The Shining, of course--so it was only natural that I'd find the next two and a half hours to be extremely boring. The last thing I remember seeing was the part where Billy asked Carrie to the prom, and everything after was a blur.

My eyes moved underneath my eyelids until they fluttered open once I felt myself being lifted up from the couch into the strong arms of a stranger. I was being carried bridal style, but the house was too dark for me to make out the man's face. When he turned his head to look at me, I made sure that my eyes were closed, and my head was nestled into the crook of his neck, the smell of pine trees instantly filling my nostrils.

I was comfortable in his arms which made it all the more easier for me to fall back asleep. Within the next few minutes, I felt my back gently touch the soft surface of a mattress as it croaked underneath my weight. I turned my head to face the side of the wall after getting settled beneath the comforter.

To this day, I'm still not sure whether or not I was dreaming or if my mind was playing tricks on me, but I could have sworn I felt these warm pair of lips leave a lingering kiss upon my cheek after they wished me a goodnight. Their soft configuration was something unforgettable, and that evening I prayed that I'd have the luxury of feeling them again one day.
