You Can Run, But You Can Never Hide
2) Seeing a Ghost... Or Five
EMBER'S POV:
I wasn't surprised that when we got to the club that night, Ruby immediately took off in search of her boyfriend, who'd told her he'd meet her here. The two of them had been together about a month, and in that time they seemed to be attached at the hip. It was kind of a mix between adorable and sickening to be quite honest, but she was happy, and that made me happy. As Ruby walked away, pushing her way through the crowd, Ivy rolled her eyes slightly, and I laughed, nudging her with my shoulder.
"I saw that Ivy," I laughed, "be nice."
She raised a brow at me with a smirk, before responding,
"I am nice. But those two are just plain gagworthy," she stated, "I swear, they get more sickeningly lovey dovey every day."
"She's happy," Daisy put in, "and that's what should matter Ivy."
I nodded at Daisy's words. Ruby didn't have the best luck in relationships. She was the type of person who wore her heart on her sleeve right from the beginning, and she had a tendency of getting her heart broken over and over. I knew that all of us were just hoping to god that this guy would stick around, and wouldn't hurt our friend. But I also knew that if he did, we'd all be there for her to help pick up the pieces as we had been every time before this. Keysha had been silent until this point, but now she grabbed Ivy's arms, tugging her towards the dance floor.
"Daisy's right, Ruby's happy and that doesn't happen often, so let it be. Besides, I wanna dance, so come on Ivy," she said, grinning, as she pulled Ivy away.
I laughed, watching them go, before turning to Daisy.
"You gonna go dance too?" I asked her.
"In a bit," she said, "but I think Mattie's working the bar tonight, we should go say hi."
I nodded with a grin. Mattie was a friend of ours, and he worked here at the club bartending most nights. Whenever he was working and we were here, we always made a point to go and bug him for a bit. That decided, we made our way in the direction of the bar, carefully pushing our way through the crowd as we went. Mattie was busy mixing a girl's drink as we approached, but he looked up and waved as he saw us coming. The girl took that moment to take her drink and walk away, so I slipped into her now empty seat, and Daisy plopped herself on the chair next to mine.
"I didn't know you girls were coming tonight," he said, grinning, "What'll it be tonight?"
Daisy ordered a beer, like usual, and I asked for a mojito. As he placed our drinks in front of us, Daisy spoke up, telling him all about our gigs and why we were celebrating, her voice exuding her enthusiasm on the subject. I smiled and let her do the rambling, since I knew trying to cut in while she was on a roll would get me nowhere.
"That's really great though," he said sincerely, "I'm happy for you guys. And I have next Saturday off, so I will definitely be there."
Suddenly, Daisy jumped up from her chair, and looked at me.
"Ok. I wanna dance now. You coming? Or do you wanna stay here? If so, can you watch my beer for me?"
I rolled my eyes with a smile at her words.
"Nah I'm not ready to dance yet, and yes love, I'll watch your beer. Though I highly doubt Mattie would let anyone mess with your drink."
I stuck my tongue out at her, and she laughed, before turning and heading out to the dance floor to find the others. I turned back to Mattie to find him looking me over, and then suddenly he just burst out laughing. I blinked at him, confused.
"What on earth is so funny?" I asked him.
"I'm just thinking that with you wearing that dress, every guy within a ten foot radius is going to be throwing them self at you pretty soon, and it's going to be amusing to watch you to turn them all down like you always do and kill each and every one of their tiny little egos."
Harry's POV:
When Niall had returned from visiting his little sister in London a couple of weeks ago, and adamantly sworn that he had spotted Ember there in the city, at first I hadn't been sure whether to believe him. We'd been looking for her for almost seven bloody years, ever since the day she'd escaped the flat and disappeared seemingly off the face of the planet, all with no luck or results. You would think that after almost seven years my anger might have dulled a bit, but it hadn't. I was still just as furious about her escape and disappearance now as I had been then, and I knew Zayn and the others were as well. When Niall had come home from his sister's, and looked at us with a calm but triumphant look on his face, and informed us of what he had seen, I had made him sit down and tell us everything.
(flashback)
The door opened and Niall rushed in, and he looked at Zayn and I with a strange look on his face.
"Ember. I found her. She's in London."
I looked at Zayn, my face probably showing my incredulity, before looking back at Niall. We had been looking for her for a long time now, and I didn't want to get my hopes up and have this be a mistake. But I also knew that it was unlikely that Niall would mistake someone else for our Ember. Her face wasn't one you could forget easily, especially not when you'd seen it contorted in a number of different expressions as you fucked the living daylights out of her. I motioned for the empty chair at the table.
"Sit down and tell us everything, don't leave one detail out Niall."
(Present time)
And he had been right, she was here. She had just unknowingly walked right by me with some other girl on her way to the bar. I had almost reached out and grabbed her right then and there, but Louis had gripped my arm, stopping me.
"No Harry, we don't want to make a scene here, we'll wait it out until she leaves, and grab her in a less crowded setting," he muttered.
Sighing, aggravated, I nodded. He was right, I knew he was, Louis often had to remind me to think before I acted, this time was no different.
"Fine, we wait it out. But I want to get closer, now. I don't want her to leave my sight," I snapped.
Louis nodded, and we made our way closer to the bar where she was now seated, talking to the bartender. I didn't like how close they were to each other, or how chummy they seemed, at all. I could feel my jealousy and temper start to flare. But instead of allowing it to take over right that moment, I took a breath, and setting my jaw, forced myself to calmly keep it in for the time being.
We moved a bit closer, wanting to know what they were talking about, and a smirk grew on my face as I heard her familiar voice speak.
"What on earth is so funny?" she said to the bartender, blinking at him.
"I'm just thinking that with you wearing that dress, every guy within a ten foot radius is going to be throwing them self at you pretty soon, and it's going to be amusing to watch you to turn them all down like you always do and kill each and every one of their tiny little egos." he said in response, still laughing.
Louis and I looked at each other, jealousy now flaring in both of us at the thought of another man touching what was ours. At the sound of her voice again, we turned and went back to observing the conversation.
"You are ridiculous Mattie, they are not all going to throw themselves at me," she said to him, rolling her eyes, "now can I get a refill on this mojito pretty please?'
"Yes they are going to throw themselves at you Emmy, like they always do. And just like you always do, you're going send them all away with a seriously bruised ego. I swear sometimes I think you do it on purpose."
"Yeah Mattie, I totally intentionally go out at night with this evil plot to make the males of London feel like crap. You've totally figured it all out."
The sarcasm in her voice was clear, and Louis had to cover his laugh at it with a cough.
"She'd never get away with talking to us like that," he murmured, "when did she get so confident?"
I shrugged, keeping my attention mainly on Ember and this Mattie guy, who were still talking.
"I'm just saying Ember, you don't have to say no to every guy, we're not all these terrible beasts ya know."
Ember shook her head at him with a small laugh.
"You know I don't date Mattie. I swore off men a long time ago. That isn't going to change any time soon," she told him, "I'm much happier alone. The only people I need in my life, I already have. You, Daisy, Ivy, Keysha and Ruby, that's it."
He shook his head at her, before handing her her refilled drink.
"Whatever you say Em, whatever you say."
Ember's POV:
"Whatever you say Em, whatever you say.""You act like you don't believe me," I smiled at him.
"I honestly don't. Sooner or later, you're not gonna want to be alone anymore, and then a guy is going to come along that you're finally going to let in," he said, "and I wanna be there to see it happen, so I can say I told you so."
I shook my head at him. Our conversation was suddenly interrupted when Keysha came rushing over, looking really upset and out of breath.
"Ember... thank god," she said, trying to slow her breathing, "we have a problem... Malik is here... and he has Daisy cornered outside..."
I let out a loud very audible growl as I slammed my glass on the bar counter, and stood up. Malik was Daisy's abusive exboyfriend. We hadn't had to worry about him for the last two years, because he'd been locked up for beating her to a pulp. But he'd gotten out of jail recently, and we'd all had a bad feeling that he was going to cause problems.
"Oh hell fucking no," I said angrily, "he is not hurting her again. It's not happening."
Mattie put down the bottle he was holding, and was about to walk around the bar to come with us, but I shook my head.
"No, you can't leave the bar unattended Mattie... I'll handle this. Just do me a favor, and if I'm not back here with Daisy in ten minutes, call the cops and tell them what's going on, yeah?"
He nodded his head at me. I grabbed Keysha, and the two of us rushed back through the club, and out the side door, into the alley where Malik had Daisy pushed up against a wall.
"Get your hands off of her Malik!" I exclaimed, glaring at him, hatred burning in my eyes.
"Stay out of this Ember," he said, choking Daisy, not allowing her to speak or really breathe for that matter, "This is between me and Daisy."
"Um no. This involves me, because that is my best friend that you have pinned against the wall there. And we both know she has a restraining order against you," I said coldly, "So like I said, get your hands off of my friend, and get the hell out of here, before the cops get here."
"You didn't call the cops," he smirked, "I know you Ember, you ran straight out here yourself, you didn't stop to call anyone."
"You're right," I said, smirking smugly myself, "I didn't call them. But Mattie did, because I told him to. So I would get out of here Malik."
He glared at me, saying nothing for a moment, before turning and spitting on Daisy's face.
"This isn't over love, don't you think it is," he growled at her.
And then he let her go, and stormed out of the alley past me. Letting out a sigh of relief, I rushed to Daisy's side, Keysha right behind me. I grabbed Daisy and pulled her against me into a tight hug.
"God Daisy, are you okay?" I asked, my voice breaking,
She nodded slowly, clinging tightly to me.
"I... I think so yeah... but I... I really just wanna go home now."
I nodded, and turned to look at Keysha.
"Can you take her home? I'm gonna run inside and tell the others what happened, and say bye to Mattie..."
"Of course," Keysha replied, reaching out her arm for Daisy, "come on love, lets get you home."
As I watched them go, I frowned. I couldn't even describe how mad I was. Why, just why, hadn't that bastard Malik gotten more than just two measley years in prison? He should have been locked up for far longer after what he'd put her through. But then, that was the way life was, wasn't it? I had been tortured and raped for two years, and my abusers were still free and doing whatever they wanted back in my hometown.
With a sigh, I turned around, and was about to go back inside, but found the door blocked by a tall figure. Chocolate brown eyes stared at me, as his lips curled into a smirk. Liam. I froze in shock, unsure of what to do. Biting my lip, I tried to figure out my chances of escape, and pondered turning and making a run for it.
"Before you even think about trying to get away," his voice interrupted my thoughts, "You should know Harry and Louis are both inside the club, Niall's waiting just outside the front door, and Zayn is back at the street your flat is on, just in case you try to go home."
So that was it... I was caught.
